Australia / Hugh Wood, Canley Vale, NSW
« on: Wednesday 23 June 21 19:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Hugh Wood was born in Wales.  He immigrated to NSW about 1887 and lived at Canley Vale.  Seemingly once there he re-invented himself, coming up variously as Huwie, Hewie, Huwie Henry Hughes Wood, Hewie H H Wood etc.  He died at Canley Vale in 1936.

Can any one please help me find out what he did for a living there?  In one directory I found him listed as a foreman, but nothing more.  I have checked Trove.

Many thanks, brigau

Montgomeryshire / Egwest of Penegoes
« on: Sunday 13 June 21 22:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have come across a series of articles written in 1910 for Y Gwyliedydd Newydd by a gentleman using the pen name of Egwest in which he reminisces about his early years growing up in Penegoes.  Does anyone know who he might be? I am trying to pin down the dates of these memories.  Could be anywhere around 1830 – 1850.  I believe he spent his latter years in the Abergynolwyn – Talyllyn area.

Occupation Interests / Life aboard ship for an 11 year old?
« on: Monday 10 October 16 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Researching a family ancestor born 1831 in Glasgow, I find from F M P records that he was ticketed in the capacity of ‘Steward’ in 1849 after being at sea since 1842 as a ‘Boy’.  Another record shows for a 15 year old as ‘height: still growing’ been at sea since the age of three!

The 11yr old from Glasgow was the only son of a widowed mother and from my 21st C perspective I find this difficult to comprehend.  Who looked after these boys?  Was it one person in particular?  What provision was there for an education?  Certainly he received one; by 1850 he had settled in America and later excelled as a treasurer in local government and other public bodies.

Can anyone describe the lives of these ship board lads?

South Africa / William and John Boyd - from Scotland to South Africa
« on: Tuesday 27 September 16 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a 1901 Australian newspaper article which states that Donald Boyd (born 1863 Scotland, immigrated to Au ca1883,) a storekeeper-general merchant was leaving NSW to go into business with his brother in Bloemfontein.  He was, however, in Glasgow in 1903 and back in Australia before 1908.

There are two possible brothers: William, born 1865 and John, born 1862, both in Scotland.

Looking for William on family search brings up:
1889: William Boyd, 23yrs, a shop keeper, married Margaret Jocoba de Wet, 22yrs, 29 May, Cape Town
1950: William Boyd, born in Scotland, a Retired General Dealer (own account) now an Old Age Pensioner and a widower, died aged 84yrs.  His place of residence was Nazareth House, Mill Street, Cape Town.  Burial at the Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Mowbray.

John Boyd – tenuous!
1920 Annie Hay Boyd, 30 yrs, married Ernest Cecil Trafford, 34yrs at Pietermaritzburg, witnesses John Boyd and Charlotte Trafford.

Have saved this record simply because the parents of these three men were John Boyd and Annie Hay McLeay.

It’s quite possible, of course that both brothers went to South Africa.  Can anyone please help consolidate or dispel William and John?

Argyllshire / Camusnagaul Free Church, Kilmallie?
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 17:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have two marriage certificates; 1856 and 1869 at Camusnagaul, Kilmallie, Argyll.  The celebrant for both was Charles Stewart, FC minister of Fort William, but I cannot find any reference to a church at Camusnagaul.  Can anyone help with this?

Inverness / Kilmallie place names
« on: Monday 27 June 16 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help?

John Boyd and his family were enumerated at Inchrie, District 506 Inverness shire in 1851.  His wife, who came from Blarmachfoldach, died in 1855 and the Registrar noted that she had lived at Loch Arkaig-side for the past 18 years.  So Inchrie is north of Loch Eil and south of Loch Arkaig, but where exactly?

Other family members lived at Craoitacharra by Blarmachfoldach, District 520 Kilmallie, (Argyll) sometimes spelt Craoitachara, with one reference to Craoitacharra House, but I cannot find any other information apart from the census and BMD certs.

Australia / Corris Street, Yarraville VIC
« on: Saturday 04 July 15 00:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for a link between Corris Street, Yarraville and the village of Corris in Mid Wales.

One of the most notable émigrés from this village was Evan Rowlands (1826 – 1894), son of the local blacksmith, who ran an aerated water business in Ballarat and died a very wealthy man.  There was also Griffith David Davies who kept strong links with both Evan Rowlands and their mutual home village.  Griffith was born 1825 in Corris.  He, like his father before him, became a skinner/wool dealer and went to Victoria sometime after the UK 1871 census, purchased property in Arran Street, (described at the rime as being in Footscray), returned to Wales, albeit with the intention of emigrating with his wife and family but ultimately died in Wales in 1886.  One condition of his Will was that his children immigrate to Victoria, which they did.

Although tenuous, I feel there is some logical link between the Welsh village and the naming of Corris Street in Yarraville.  Any input most welcome!

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me if there is any further information to be had.

World War One / RGA Gun Identification
« on: Tuesday 11 March 14 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

This gun is one of two shown in a group photograph, taken Boxing Day 1917, of 335 Siege Battery, RGA.  Can anyone please identify it.  All I know is that it isn't a 6in Howitzer!
