United States of America / Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 15:38 BST (UK)  »
My G Grandfather Thomas Harkin/Harkins was a Butler and emigrated to NY in 1903 with the intention of bringing my G Grandmother and their children over at a later date but unfortunately died before he could do so, he died on 24th June 1906 and was buried on the 26th

I have got a copy of his death cert and have managed to locate were he is buried:

The Green-Wood Cemetery
500 25th Street
Brooklyn, NY 11232

Grave 335, Lot 30010, Section 135

I believe he is buried with his Sister and her Husband (Ellen & Hugh Nesbitt) who died in 1900/1899

This is a bit of a long shot but I am hoping there is someone in the area with a bit of spare time that could visit the grave to check if there is is a headstone, and if so then take a photo and email it to me.

I visited NY in 2007 but unfortunately this was before I realised my G Grandfather was buried there!

Donegal / Williams/Williamson Ramelton Donegal
« on: Thursday 15 July 10 17:30 BST (UK)  »
My G G Grandfather was Samuel Williams/Williamson (Some records I have found show the name as Williams others show it as Williamson, eg on his death cert his name is Williams and it gives the informants name as Ellen Brogan, Daughter, but on Ellen's Birth and marriage record to John Brogan it lists her name as Williamson!)

He died on 7th July 1918 in Derry and from the cemetery records I have established that he was from Ramelton and his Parents were Matthew & Catherine Williams (Possibly Williamson!)

He married Margaret McDaid although I cannot find a marriage record I have been able to establish fom the cemetery records that Margaret was from Derryhassan and her parents were Hugh and Margaret McDaid. The first record of a child I could find was Ellenor Williamson born 21 June 1875 so I would assume they were married before that.

Samuel is showing as 52 in the 1901 Census, 54 in the 1911 census and 60 on his death cert in 1918 so probably born sometime between late 1840s and late 1850s.

I have found a baptism record for a Samuel Williams son of Matthew Williams and Catherine Gardiner, 10 Dec 1843 at Ramelton 1st Presbyterian but i am unsure if this if the correct person as the date seems a bit early.

I have also found a Presbyterian church marriage record of a Matthew Williams from Kilmacrennan to a Rachel Wilheron from Ramelton on the 14th June 1826, but the wifes name does not match, if this is the same Matthew maybe he remarried later?

I am unsure of the religion of Samuels parents but I do know that Samuel and his family are listed as catholic in the 1901 & 1911 census.

Finally I have just receieved the following death certs but although it seems likely I cannot be sure if this is Samuel's parents:

Katherine Williamson, 7 March 1881, Big Ards, Age 72, Married, Wife of Labourer
Informant: Rebecca Williamson, Daughter, Big Ards

Mathew Williamson, 4 April 1886, Big Ards, Age 75, Widower, Labourer
Informant: Susan McDaid, Daughter, Big Ards

(Big Ards appears to be fairly close to Ramelton)

Sorry for the long winded message but I tried to include as much detail as possible to see in it rings any bells with fellow researchers! if anyone has any information on this Williams/Williamson line or is connected to them I would love to hear from you!

Donegal / Harkin Family Inver Donegal
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 02:36 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for info on the Harkin family of Inver Co. Donegal, they appear to be one of the very few 'Church of Ireland' Harkin families in Donegal and I believe their Church was Inver COI

Information I have to date:

My GG Grandparents:
Thomas Harkin c1831 - bef 1911 married to Rebecca Colwell/Caldwell c1837 - 1914

Children I know of:
Thomas Harkin (my G Grandfather) 1860-1906 married to Margaret Dunlop c1850 - c1930
(married Leckpatrick COI Tyrone 1883) had 6 children, 4 survived (James Andrew, Thomas Johnston, Edith & Hugh), Thomas emigrated to New York with the intention of bringing the family over at a later date but died before he could do so.

Ellen Harkin c1869 - 1900 emigrated to New York and married Hugh Nesbitt c1871 - 1899, no known children

John Harkin 1873 - aft 1911 married Mary Jane Coulter c1883 - 1953, stayed in Inver area, had at least 2 children, John & Annie

Andrew Harkin 1876 - 1907 emigrated to New York and married Lizzie ? , had one child also called Lizzie.

I have visited Inver COI Graveyard and could only find one Harkin Headstone:

In Loving Memory of
MARY JANE HARKIN died Feb 1953
ANNIE FREEBORN died Sept 1959
TOM FREEBORN died Oct 1973
JOHN HARKIN died Jul 1982

I believe this could possibly be John’s Wife, Children & Son in Law.

Any more info on this family would be greatly appreciated!

Derry (Londonderry) / Margaret Dunlop
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on Margaret Dunlop (Great Grandmother) believe she may be from Garvagh.

Her age is 50 on the 1901 census and abt 65 on the 1911 census and in both cases she was living in Waterloo St Derry so prob born around late 1840's / early 1850's

Married my Great Grandfather Thomas Harkin (Postman, Holy hill) on 23rd Mar 1883 in Leckpatrick COI Tyrone, Occupation was given as Ladies Maid and Address as Holy Hill, Fathers name was Andrew Dunlop and his occupation is given as Carpenter, had 6 children between 1884 and 1891 (4 survived according to 1911 census) First 5 were born in Rossfad, Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh and the sixth, My Grandfather Hugh Harkin (later changed to Harkens) was born in Shuttlehill, Coleraine, Co. Derry.

I have found a record of a Marriage between Andrew Dunlop and Jane Johnston at 1st Garvagh on the 10th Nov 1842 on the Bann Valley site.

One of Margarets children was called Johnston Harkin giving me a clue that the above might be her parents but I cannot find a record of her birth so cant be sure.

Any information that could confirm that the above Andrew Dunlop is indeed her father would be much appreciated!
