Devon Lookup Requests / Joseph HIGGINS - Dorcas LOND
« on: Monday 20 February 12 12:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am stuck with my forebears Joseph Higgins and Dorcas Lond. The 1841 census states Dorcas Higgins is a widow (crossed out) in the Occupation column. The census was Plymouth, Charles the Martyr Parish. From this it would appear that Dorcas was born circa 1806. I have the birth certificate of her daughter Dorcas who was born August 12th 1839 and shows her father Joseph Higgins a Mariner as deceased. I am unable to trace a death certificate for Joseph. I have a full record of Dorcas from 1841 until her death in 1873 aged 67 in East Stonehouse. Any information prior to 1841 would be a real bonus. Thank you.

Devon / Mary SOPER born circa 1805
« on: Wednesday 15 February 12 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace back from the 1861 census the roots of Mary Soper who was married to John Gliddon Hearn in August 1851. This census and succeeding records show place of birth as Paignton. There is a Mary Soper who fits the bill in the 1851 census but which gives her place of birth as North Huish. On research I have found that Paignton & North Huish have the same postcode "TQ". This is rather a long winded way of saying could North Huish be also called Paignton in the general scheme of things?

Ireland / Quin(n) _ Michael
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 16:07 BST (UK)  »
I've reached a dead end with my Irish roots. I am looking for any info about a Michael Quinn who is given as the father of Thomas Quinn who married Mary Daley on July 3rd 1876 :-

"Thomas Quinn aged 24yrs a labourer of 38 Old Newbarns, Barrow married Mary Daley aged 22 years a weaver of 29 Hawke Street, Barrow at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Chapel, Barrow-in-Furness. Witnesses were Charles Glover and Catherine Smith. The groom’s father is given as Michael Quinn and the bride’s father is given as Patrick Daley (Deceased)."

The 1881 census gives Thomas as coming from Ireland so presumably his father was still there at this time.
