The Common Room / Advice Needed - Please
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the names of the people who lived at an address which has come to light in the course of research into my family.

The period is between 1920 and 1931 and the address at that time was 44 Russell Place, Blackheath SE3. Later the name of the road was changed to Reynolds Place.

How do I try to find out who lived there during that period.

The folks in question would now be deceased.

Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

Europe / Help Needed with German Translation Please
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 22:13 BST (UK)  »
The attached images form part of my Uncle's WW2 service record. He served in the Australian Army and died defending the Island of Crete during WW2. These two pages are in German so I am presuming he was captured after being wounded and sadly died. He is buried in in Suda Bay War Cemetery on Crete. I have shown these pages to a German colleague but she has had difficulty translating commenting that the style of writing is old and therefore difficult for her to translate.

Can anyone help please.

Thank you.

World War One / Service History WW1 - Died Flanders
« on: Saturday 12 June 10 09:56 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the service details of my relative Ernest Studham and wondering if anyone here can help me?

He was killed on the 20th October 1918 in Flanders at the foot of the Wulfsberg at the village of Zwevegem. From conversation with the wonderful local historian for the cemetery at Harlebeke New British Cemetery where he is buried I have the details of the action in which he was killed, so it is his service prior to 1918 that I am trying to research. I think he was married, did his wife  receive a war pension? how do i find out ? When did he enlist originally in the West Sussex Regiment, when did he transfer to the 29th Division RF from the Royal Sussex Regiment? where was he prior to 1918? all questions I am trying to answer.

If anyone can help me I would be very grateful and many thanks.

Australia / Van Diemen's Land Records of Convict Elizabeth STUDHAM
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to trace my 3xGreat Aunt Elizabeth Studham b. Monkton Kent 1810 who was convicted of burning down the Poor House in Birchington Kent UK - during the Swing Riots sentenced to death - sentence commuted to transportation.

She sailed from Woolwich UK on the prison ship Mary111 on 11th June 1831 and arrived in Hobart Van Diemen's Land on 19th October 1831.

She went to Cascades Female Factory .

She made 4 applications to marry the last being to Joseph King and apparently they actually married on 24th. July 1843 ( not confirmed by certificate)

Thereafter I can find no trace of her except for a Ticket of Leave notification on 20th October 1843 in her maiden name, which is why I wonder about her marriage actually taking place, or did Tickets of Leave have to be requested in the name of arrival in Van Demien's Land regardless of marriage?

Which would be the best way to try and trace her after 1843.

Thanks very much.

Lincolnshire / Aldertree Inn - Horsington- What happened?
« on: Friday 30 April 10 21:07 BST (UK)  »
My gg Grandfather James Panton and his Wife Jane are living at the Aldertree Inn - Horsington on the 1871 census -  occupation fellmonger.

In 1851 census they are shown as being at Hale - Horsington - James is an ag. Labourer.

In 1861 census they are shown as being at 56, Horsington?  - James is a wood dealer

So, they have been in Horsington for allot of years and I am at a loss to understand why a fellmonger would have his place of residence with his family as an Inn.

I have tried to find a reference to the Inn but no luck.

Can anyone help me or come up with ideas?

Thank you.
