US Lookup Requests / BURROWS in Colesville, Broome, NY
« on: Monday 31 January 22 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether someone could give me some information about the BURROWS family who emigrated from England to Colesville, Broome, NY some time between 1841 and 1850, please.

There is a family consisting of James 59, Sarah 60, Mary Ann 24 and Sarah 16 in 1850 who I think were in Chard, Somerset in 1841.

There is also John (possibly John H) who is 21 and living with his future in-laws, the Searls in 1850.

What I'd like to know is whether they are the same family or not - did they arrive on the same ship? Is there any indication as to the relationship between them?

Thank you for any help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / W Burgess photographer?
« on: Sunday 25 May 14 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I've found what I think is called a CDV in the old photographs from my parents' house. This one just has a photographer's logo on the back which, from what I've read, might mean it's one of the older type. The back is plain white with a blue logo in the middle - an ornate W with the name BURGESS written through the middle of the W. I've tried to photograph it but the results are too poor to post here.

Can anyone tell me where W Burgess worked and roughly when? It might help to identify the two young men in the photograph. I've tried google and the lists online of Victorian/Edwardian photographers with no success so far.

Many thanks,
John

Armed Forces / Which regiment, please?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 14 19:26 BST (UK)  »
I have a number of photos which I've discovered as we clear out my parents' house, including this one. There's no name on the back, but I wonder whether anyone can tell me which regiment he was serving with, please. The photographer was T A Stephenson who had a studio in Morley, near Leeds.

I have another family photograph with a man who could be the same person, not in dress uniform this time, with what looks like the letter T above the Sergeant's stripes on his left arm.

The photo dates, I think, from WW1.

Thank you for any help,
John

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Marriage in Wokingham
« on: Saturday 01 June 13 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me with a marriage in Wokingham on 23rd March 1788, please? The couple are William MORRIS and Sarah CHEESEMAN. Can anyone tell me which parish they came from - I'm hoping they are the couple who lived and baptised their children in Egham, Surrey...

Many thanks,
John

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Marriage at St Peter's Leeds in 1830
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 11:57 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone could give me details of the marriage at St Peter's Leeds on 11th April 1830 of Samuel MELLOR and Elizabeth ADAMSON. I think it's possible that this is my ggg grandparents but I can't be absolutely sure - if it gives witnesses or, better still but most unlikely, occupation for Samuel, that would be very helpful.

I'm also interested in any further details of the baptism of Mary MELLOR on 28th May 1831 at St Peter's Leeds to Samuel and Elizabeth. Are there any details of their address or Samuel's  occupation?

Many thanks,
John

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / FOX or FOXHALL?
« on: Friday 05 November 10 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could give me the details of the FOX family in Middlesex in 1851, please.

Father is Robert born c1824 and mother is Ellen born c1829 and the daughter is also Ellen, born 1850.

I have been looking for Robert and Ellen FOXHALL for some time without success and wonder if this could be them. They had a daughter Elizabeth Ellen in January 1850, born in Exeter.

Many thanks.

Devon / THOMAS in Exeter?
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
My wife is descended from Elizabeth Ellen FOXHALL who was born 6th January 1850 in Holloway Buildings, St Sidwell, Exeter.

Her parents were Robert Foxhall and Ellen THOMAS who married in St James, Westminster in 1849. Ellen's father was called John and he was a  carpenter according to the marriage certificate.

Although I can't be sure that Ellen was from Devon, it is most likely - also in Holloway Buildings in 1851 were William Thomas and his wife and William was also a journeyman carpenter. My guess is that William might be Ellen's uncle. William was from Topsham, Devon.

I wonder if anyone can help me with Ellen's baptism - I can't find her in 1841 or 1851 so don't know her age and she'd died by 1861, although she was 'full age' in 1849 at her marriage. Equally, if anyone can find her (preferably with her parents) in 1841, that would be great.

There is a John Thomas, carpenter, in Friernhay Street in 1851 but (I think) he gives his birthplace as South Molton which doesn't fit with William being from Topsham..

Many thanks for any help,
John

Armed Forces / 17th Regiment Enlistment Information
« on: Monday 23 August 10 08:52 BST (UK)  »
This is really a query about Next of Kin.

My great-great grandfather William GODARTH/GODDARD enlisted in the 17th Regiment in 1853. I have read the Depot Description Book for the 17th which tells me his age, appearance, where and when he enlisted, etc., have the record from the Medal Rolls and have his Discharge Papers from ancestry. Would there be any further papers related to his service, particularly a record of his enlistment, which might give a Next of Kin? If so, where might I be able to obtain it?

many thanks,
John

Canada Lookup Request / Marriage at Montreal Garrison Church
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 15:22 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could advise me about the Drouin Collection, please.

According to the record on ancestry, my great-great grandparents married at the Garrison Church Montreal on 18th April 1859. Their names were William GODARTH and Mary CARROLL. However, there is no name given for either of their fathers.

I realise there could be a number of reasons for that, but I wonder whether all the information recorded in the original parish register is included in the Drouin records or whether the original marriage record would include the fathers' names?

If the original entry would have more, can someone guide me as to how I would obtain a copy of the original entry, please.

Many thanks,
John
