Midlothian / Margaret Hughes, born 4.11.1886, Edinburgh
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 03:59 BST (UK)  »
Margaret married Henry Welsh 19.4.1907, St Patrick's, Edinburgh. They had four children, all born in Edinburgh, Annie 1907-1907; Margaret 1908-2003; Henry 1911- 1941; Walter 1913-1915.
Henry joined the Royal Scots Reserve 4.1.02. His last re-engagement, for four years, was on 29.7.11. He was called up for permanent service on 15.8.14. He was transferred to UK for release 22.9.1918.
The marriage broke down. There is a letter, dated 21.10.1916, in Henry's army record in which Henry requests that Margaret no longer receives any payment from him. He states that he will continue to support the two children as long as they remain in her care.
There is an undated note in his record stating that the children are in the care of Mrs F Hepburn, 142 High Street, Edinburgh. A search on Google revealed that this was the address of Children 1st (RSSPCC).
The son of Margaret's daughter, contacted the orphanage to try and find out the reason for their admission. He was told that they were admitted on 20.9.1918 from 2 Ann Terrace, Abbeyhill. The reason for admission is given as 'by order of Court'. The children, due to their Roman Catholic denomination, were transferred to the RC orphanage at Smyllum, Lanarkshire on 30.9.1918. Smyllum closed in the 1980's. Margaret's son contacted The Daughters of Charity in London in an effort to get further information. He only received an admission document showing the children were registered together at Smyllum on 1.10.1918. The document indicates that their father is a soldier with ASC and that their mother is in prison. The document mentions a conditional baptism for Henry at St Mary's, Lanark on 13.6.1919. Henry is listed as an inmate at Smyllum on the 1921 Census.
I am hoping to find out why, where and for how long Margaret was imprisoned.

Aberdeenshire / George McAndrew born about 1861, Aberdeen
« on: Tuesday 09 March 21 07:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth record for George McAndrew.

He married Christina Russell in Edinburgh on 16.8.1881, according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland. He stated that he was a 21 year old bachelor and that his parents were Frederick McLennan McAndrew, Blacksmith, Deceased, and Mary McLennan, Deceased.

1891 Census states that he was was born in Aberdeen in 1861 and is 30 years of age.

1901 Census states that he was born in 1863 in St Cuthberts, Edinburgh and is 38 years old.

George and Christina have 5 children. George 1882-1882 and Christina 1883 were born in Plantation, Lanarkshire. Another George 1886, William 1888 and Carolina 1895 were born in Edinburgh.

George died in Edinburgh on 20.1.1930. His death is registered by his daughter in law and she states that his parents are as stated by George on his marriage registration - Frederick McLennan McAndrew, Blacksmith, Deceased and Mary McLennan, Deceased.

I cannot find a birth registration for George, or any record of his parents.

On 31.8.1881 there is a George McAndrews, (with an 'S') listed as a military deserter. He was born in 1863 in Aberdeen. I am wondering if this could be George and that he deserted to get married.

I was not sure where to post this, Aberdeen or Edinburgh.

Margaret Effingham, was born 17.3.1871 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to James Effingham and Mary Welsh.

The 1871 Census lists James, 27, wife Mary, 24, and children Mary Ann, 4, James, 2, and Margaret, 1 month.

Mary Ann dies in 1874. Another son, John, is born in 1873, and dies in 1877. Robert is born in 1879.

The 1881 Census lists James as a patient in Edinburgh Insane Asylum. Mary is now head of family and listed as a Hawker (General). James, 12, Margaret, 10, and Robert, 1, are listed with her.

Father James dies 18.2.1890 in the Royal Asylum. Mary is admitted to the Royal Asylum on 22.4.1890 and dies on 1/5/1890. Her usual address was St Cuthbert's Poor House.

The 1891 Census lists Robert, 9, as a boarder with an elderly lady and 7 other children, in Cranston, Midlothian. He lives to be 92 and dies in 1972.

James arrives in Quebec in 1887. He is 18. In 1900 he is living in Washington. He marries in 1918 and dies in 1957.

A Maggie Effingham, 16, born in 1871, domestic, sails from Bristol aboard the 'Buenos Ayrean' and arrives in Quebec on 12.11.1887.

1891 Census of Canada, Ward 7, Hamilton City, Ontario, lists Maggie Effingham, 19, 1872, born Scotland, working as a ward maid.

That is the last thing I've managed to find out about her.

Midlothian / John Welsh/Ann McKenzie
« on: Tuesday 14 June 11 04:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello. long time follower, first time user, so please excuse any mistakes. I have reached a brick wall with 2xgrandparents John and Ann. they had the following children;
Jane 1845
Mary abt 1847
Margaret 1849
John 1851
Walter 1853
Henry 1856.
I have S.C.A. certs for Jane, Margaret, John and Henry, all bapt. Edinburgh St Mary's. parents listed as John Welsh and Ann McKenzie. I have stat. birth cert for Henry, born Edinburgh, again, parents, John Welsh and Ann McKenzie. I haven't found a birth record for Mary.
I have death certs. for Margaret in 1851, John in 1852, John Welsh, labourer, father, place of death for both Toddrick's Wynd, Edinburgh.
I have a death cert. for Henry in 1858 at Canongate Poor House, parents John Welsh, Ann Welsh ms  McKenzie.
Mary married in 1868, aged 20, parents John Welsh, mason's lab. and Ann Welsh, ms McKenzie.
Walter married in 1877, parents John Welsh, dealer in  barrels, Ann Welsh, ms McKenzie, deceased.
Walter's death cert. in 1904 lists parents as John Welsh, barrel dealer, deceased, and Ann McKenzie, deceased.
The family appears in 1851 census, John born in Kilmore, Ireland and Ann in Canongate. Ann and John then 'disappear'. I can find Walter, Jane and Mary in later census from 1871 but nothing definite for Ann and John. I have not managed to find a record of their marriage, either.  A John Welsh, married to Mary, appears in 1861 -1891 Census, in 1881 his occupation is shown as dealer in wine
and spirit casks, and in 1891 - cask merchant. sounds like same John, but was having children with Mary at the same time as Ann. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
