I have 3 Irish CDV's created by 2 photographic studios in the 19th C. I know roughly when the images were taken and the names of the ancestors who are featured on the images. The family name is Nixon.

I am curious about the studios and whether or not any records might remain that may shed further ''light'' on these images. ie company registers, negative lists etc and maybe even original negatives but that's a long shot !

The studios are Lauder Bros of Kingstown at 83 Lower Georges St (2 images from the 1870s) with probable negative numbers 9642 and 1172. I have dated one image quite precisely using UK military records.

The 3rd image is from Julyan and Ahlfred of 78 Grafton St Dublin. No negative number is present but probably created in the 1860s.

Are there any records surviving for these companies ?

Dublin / Alcohol Licence Records - Dublin
« on: Friday 09 November 12 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have traced a newspaper reference to a person of interest applying (Perhaps obtaining ? - cant be sure as it was a transcription only) an alcohol licence in Dublin in 1874.

Do records exist for persons involved in the alcohol trade then ?

If so what type of information might be found ? ie do the records state place of residence or former profession/occupation for such applicants ?

Cheers

Dublin / Nixon, Mary Anne - location of grave in Dublin
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have recently traced a (potential) ancestor to Dublin on 2nd January 1896 with a death certificate copy but I am unsure as to how to find their grave (if indeed they have one) in Dublin.

Her name was Mary Anne Nixon and she died on 2nd January 1896 at 78 Upper Dorset St Dublin North.

Aged 73 yrs approx at date of death, Mary was the widow of a farmer named John Nixon (He appears to have predeceased her - perhaps in 1872).

If there is any mention of Co Westmeath on her grave (assuming she has one) there is an excellent chance that this Mary was the mother of my GG Henry Nixon - who was born at Rosmead Co Westmeath in November 1850.

I know she was alive in 1889 as I have a court records from NSW mentioning her.

As I live in Sydney Australia I am not quite 'round the corner' ! .... so I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/assistance people can give !

Cheers

England / Desmond Charles John Blandford Nixon
« on: Tuesday 06 November 12 11:06 GMT (UK)  »

Am seeking information on descendants of Desmond Charles John Blandford Nixon (b1920) in London I believe. He appears to have married in 1944 and again in 1957 in the UK. I have extensive information on some of his ancestors for the 19th Century and would like to make contact with any descendants for exchange of information.

Dublin / Mary Anne Nixon Dublin death 1896
« on: Sunday 21 October 12 08:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have 'traced' a death of interest to January 1896 using the Irish Times Index 1859-1901 via another website (FindMyPast). When I search the Irish Times site I am unable to find the reference in question or to determine whether there is more information to be obtained. Confusing.

The details are:

Mary Anne Nixon dod 4 January 1896 (or is this the publication date ??)
of 78 Upper Dorset St Dublin
Widow of John Nixon.

I assume that Irish death certificates for the period in question were lost in 1922.

So ... how can I obtain more information on the trace as it appears to be my Nixon of interest. Problem is that these names are reasonably common but the spouse's name is correct (John Nixon) and the period of death for this Mary appears to match the limited information I have on her.

The Mary that I am seeking information on married in Killucan in April 1839. She is mentioned in Griffiths Valuation in Rathwire Co Westmeath in 1860. Her tenure there lasts until 1872 and she is referred to in a court case in NSW during 1888-89 as receiving monthly payments from her son Henry.

Would the (hard copy) Irish Times contain more information on this particular person ?

Any suggestions or additional research tips are most welcome !

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery Forts in Portsmouth/Gosport/IOW
« on: Sunday 21 October 12 01:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been on the trail of an ancestor (John Nixon) who served in the Royal Artillery between 1868-1875. For most of this time he was posted with the 21st Brigade RA at Woolwich and Portsmouth/Gosport according to WO pay records. But the forts are not specified as far as I can tell.

Does anyone have knowledge of the actual location of elements of the 21st brigade on a fort by fort basis for the period in question ? Perhaps such records no longer exist.

I have searched the general history of the forts in the area and have discovered that there were many such facilities there or under construction during the time in question.

John was present on IOW (and married there early in 1875) but I am not sure for what periods he was present there or at which forts in particular.

Any suggestions or tips for further research would be most welcome.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Grave Photo Sought in Epsom Cemetery
« on: Sunday 21 October 12 00:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone could take a photo of a grave in Epsom ? As I live in Sydney Australia I am not quite 'around the corner' to the cemetery !

The grave in question is listed on a Grave Photo Project website but the link to the actual high res image does not work. Frustrating.

Details are:

John Nixon d 23 November 1927

Grave No F228A ??? (buried with his wife Emma who died in 1937)

Epsom Ashley Rd Municipal Cemetery

I had more details on the grave kindly supplied by the manager but unfortunately my computer crashed and I lost the relevant email plus contact info.

Very much appreciated if anyone can assist.

Cheers

US Lookup Requests / John Nixon - New York City
« on: Tuesday 31 July 12 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wish to request a look up for a person of interest in the City of New York - identified in the 1920 Census. He is present in an institution and the district reference name is Lewis (I think). Curiously he only appears in ONE census listing despite being present in the US (reputedly) from about 1873.

His name was John Nixon and he was of Irish origin. His birth year was 1846. His parents names were John and Mary Ann Nixon. He was baptised at a church (St Marys) in Co
Westmeath in a town called Delvin. Born at Rosmead most likely (a local estate).

The person registered in New York matches the birth year nationality and the arrival date (1873) looks promising.

What I want to know is whether the person listed in the US Census matches the Irish personal details I have listed in this post. ...

I think I listed a photograph of him some years back but have not worked out how to repost on the same page ! Sorry if this causes any problems for the moderators !

Cheers
