Dublin / Help with address: "Shandon", Leinster Road West, Rathmines, Dublin
« on: Tuesday 19 November 13 00:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have a number of postcards addressed to Smith family members at the above address from 1903 to 1905, but nothing I have been able to find indicates where Shandon was. I assume that Shandon was just the name of a house.

My questions of anyone who might know the area are:

(1) Does Leinster Road West still exist?

(2) Is there a house still standing with the name Shandon?

(3) Is there any other way that I might find out what street number it (the house) was? (The census returns for 1901 and 1911 have not been useful as the family moved to Shandon probably in 1903 and left probably around 1907)

Dublin / Freeman of the City of Dublin
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 07:23 BST (UK)  »
Researching the papers of a much loved but recently deceased aunt, I came across a reference to an ancestor's having been "a Freeman of the City of Dublin, who declined to pay 100 pounds to pass the title to his grandson (his own son having died)."

This ancestor was allegedly my grandfather's maternal grandfather. His mother was a Browne, and her father was Stephen Browne, a bootmaker.

Can someone please explain what a "Freeman" was, and if the note sounds at all plausible?

Thank you in anticipation.

Ireland / Birth Certificates - Adopted Children
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me how the parents of adopted children were recorded on birth registers in Ireland in the mid 19th century? Would an adopted ancestor be identifiable from the publicly available records?
Thank you in anticipation.

Antrim / Kerr, Thomas and William-Australian Grave Photos
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 07:40 BST (UK)  »
I have recently photographed the graves of Thomas Kerr and his brother William Thomas Kerr at Louth, New South Wales, Australia.

The inscription on Thomas's headstone records his birth at "Kilcurry, Co Antrim, Ireland". He died on 10 February 1889 aged 23 years.

William's headstone records his death on 26 January 1924 at the age of 64.

If any relative etc would like a copy of the photos please PM me.

Dublin / Henry Elliott SMITH x 2, Father and Son
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Greetings from Australia,

I am a novice trying to trace my ancestors in Ireland. I have had some success with those from Northern Ireland, but I have become stuck with these two, my great grandfather and great great grandfather.

Both share the same name, and both were accountants at Guinness Mahon Bank in Dublin.

The elder died in Dublin in 1847 of typhus when the younger was only 5, and all that we know of him apart from his prime employment at the bank is that he taught at his church's Bible school.

The younger was born in Dublin about 1842, and died on 1 December 1895 of complications following what must have been a very early colostomy operation. He married an Isabella Brabazon (1839-1923) (sometimes spelled Brabason) and they had 6 children, of whom John Wesley SMITH (Born Bray, Co Wicklow 9 September 1878, died Adelaide South Australia 6 February 1961) was my grandfather. Lady Lilly Anderson CBE of Derry was another of the children.

I am wondering if any other chatters have any knowledge of this family?

Derry (Londonderry) / Ferguson, Gortnessey & Cunningham, Primity
« on: Friday 18 June 10 03:01 BST (UK)  »
Greetings from Australia.

I am a beginner tracking down my family history, and I have just discovered that my Great Great Grandmother was a Jane Ferguson, who married Samuel John Cunningham in the Gortnessey Meeting Place on 17 February 1847. Thereafter the Cunningham family worshipped at Christ Church, Limavady.

Jane's father was Daniel Ferguson who had a farm at Gortnessey.

Samuel Cunningham had a farm at Primity.

I have no further information about Jane other than their children's names and (most) birthdays.

Can anyone offer any assistance with details of Jane or Samuel?
