Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Today's Mystery Object
« on: Sunday 15 March 09 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
A cousin of my late father has sent me the attached photo. Neither of us have access to the object in question, so I can't do anything to improve the quality of the image for you.

We think we know who the gentlemen might have been, but there is very little to go on.

The object itself is a photo mounted in a small metal frame which has two screw holes. Obviously it was meant to be fixed to something at some time. But what?

How old was the subject when the photo was taken? And is there anything about his clothing, hair-style etc which might tell us when?

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

The birth of James Amos Forster was registered Dec qtr 1845 in Clerkenwell.

He evidently married Mary Elizabeth Johnson, Sept qtr 1871, in Holborn.

In the 1881 Census they were living at 18 Great Percy Street in London with several children and two servants. [RG 11/0349 f47 p37]

James had a fairly distinctive name and may be connected to my own branch of Forsters.

Could someone please find him for me in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses? I'd be interested to discover who his parents were.

Thanks!

Dave

Suffolk Lookup Offers / DUNWICH Parish Records
« on: Thursday 22 November 07 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
I can look up baptisms, banns, marriages and burials at Dunwich St James covering the period 1832 to about 1900 as well as earlier records for Dunwich All Saints.

These are microfiche records so you must provide a name and an approximate date to help me out!  ;)

For a look-up request please start a new topic in the CENSUS and RESOURCE LOOKUP REQUEST board for Suffolk.

Historical Note:

Dunwich was at one time a substantial port and originally had as many as eight parish churches. But over the centuries most of the town and all of its churches were lost to the sea due to a combination of coastal erosion and violent storms.

All Saints – the last of these churches – suffered the same fate. Having had no rector of its own since 1755, the church was subsequently abandoned and what remained of the building fell into the sea around a hundred years ago.

St James – the new church – was not built until 1832. During the hiatus, most Dunwich baptisms, marriages and burials took place in one of the neighbouring parishes – typically Westleton. (I also have microfiche copies of the Westleton PRs.)

However, the records for All Saints do not stop in 1755. The local population continued to use the churchyard for some marriages (until about 1773) as well as baptisms and burials (until the early 1820s).

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 - Shoreditch - John Sutton COMPLETE
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 10:08 BST (UK)  »
I have found John Sutton in the 1891 Census of Shoreditch (Hoxton New Town). That is not the problem. The problem is I cannot see who he was living with!

The reference is RG 12/246 folio 8 page 9.

You can see John Sutton (married, age 41, an ironmoulder born in Sussex) living at 27 Cavendish Street. He is listed at the very botton of the page.

The next page - folio 8 page 10 - should list the rest of his family, but it's missing from the Ancestry site. In fact, if you click through the images it appears that someone has neglected to film both sides of each folio. In other words, only half of piece RG 12/246 (Districts 12-15) seems to have been scanned.

So...

If someone has access to a different copy of the 1891 Census of Shoreditch (Hoxton New Town) I would be grateful if they could check out RG 12/246 folio 8 page 10 and tell me who John Sutton was living with!

Thanks in advance.
