Family History Beginners Board / William Campbell, Davenport 1840

I have been trying to find some information on the birth of William Henry Campbell. His marriage certificate (Married 1866) in Australia indicate that he was born in Davenport in either 1838 or 1841 depending on what document you are looking at. I thought I had some close leads and went to the Cheshire registry offices when last in the UK but had no luck. His certificate indicates his mothers name was Elizabeth Rogers but there is no mention of a father in any documents. I can't find any mention of him in the 1841 census.
I am looking for some advice as to the next step as I seem to have run out of ideas at this end.
