Canada / Brick wall in Montreal
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 14:09 BST (UK)  »
Hey Rootschatters - long time no see.

I'm facing a brick wall in Montreal and would love some help.  Here's what we have to start with:

Earl Charles Taylor (may have gone by "Charles" - not sure)
b. 24 Apr 1905 (according to family - haven't found birth cert yet)
Place of birth unknown (somewhere in Canada)

Father Charles, mother Rachel (maiden name unknown)

Charles senior was apparently from Glengarry County, Ontario (near Dunvegan), but later moved to Montreal
Rachel was apparently from Nova Scotia.

Charles and Rachel are supposedly buried in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal.  Rachel died circa 1941.

I don't know when Charles moved to Montreal and so don't know where the marriage and Earl Charles' birth took place.

Earl Charles apparently worked at Eaton's in Montreal.

What I've tried:

I can't find any sign of them in the 1911 census (when Earl Charles should be age 6), or any earlier census for that matter.  There are only a few Taylor families in Glengarry County, and none named Charles.

I've had a look through Lovell's Montreal Directories, but there are too many Charles Taylors to be sure of anything.  There was an Earl Taylor, salesman at Eaton's, in 1938, 1939, and 1946, but that doesn't really get us anywhere - no Charles living at the same address that might be his father.

There are no appropriate BMDs in the Ontario records or in the Drouin collection on Ancestry.

There is a Rachel Taylor in the database at Mount Royal Cemetery who died in 1940, but the year of birth given would make her 53 when Earl Charles was born in 1905.  There is a Charles Taylor also, who died in the 70s at age 99.

I think my next step will have to be to order up those records from Mount Royal Cemetery and see what they say.  I suppose it would also help to get Earl Charles' marriage certificate - but I will have to ask the family I am doing this for if they have it or if they want to order it.  I'm not up to speed on the privacy rules for Quebec vital records.

Any other ideas??????

US Lookup Requests / 1900 Census Lookup, Epstein, Detroit
« on: Thursday 05 April 07 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping someone can find the following in the 1900 US Census:

Louis W. Epstein, born Detroit MI circa 1896
Father: David

On a border crossing record in 1931, he states he was in Detroit from birth to 1906.

Many thanks,

Occupation Interests / Bath chairman?
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 21:16 BST (UK)  »
Any ideas on the nature of the occupation "bath chairman"?  The enumerator has also later written what looks like "Whell" in front of Bath.

It is from the 1891 census: George Smith at 10 St. James Street, Buxton RG12/2778/73/37

Many thanks for any suggestions!

FH Documents and Artefacts / How to preserve a paper document?
« on: Monday 12 March 07 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

A relative was kind enough to lend me an old family document.  It is about 10 small sheets of paper folded in the middle and sewn along the fold to form a booklet.  It was used to record BMDs - probably written in the 1830s or 40s.  The ink is still in good shape - quite readable.

I have had it digitized, and now I must give it back to the owner.  However, I would like to give it back to him in a state that will be easy for him to preserve, sort of a subtle hint to take care of the document.  I was thinking I should just wrap it in some archival acid-free tissue paper.  Or is there something else I should do?

Lancashire / What is this occuaption and street name?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Could someone please take a stab at deciphering the 1871 address and occupation of Moses Bond b. <1841> Liverpool - he is the first name on RG10/3797/39/17.

I think it says 49 Warwick St. (what's written above it?) and he is a *something* Dealer.

Thanks,

Cheshire Lookup Requests / 1887/88 Cheshire Directory Look-up
« on: Monday 22 January 07 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I would greatly appreciate a look-up by anyone who has access to a Cheshire directory circa 1887.

The familiy I am researching were all from Liverpool, but one son was born across the river in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire (all census records are consistent, and the birth registration seems to corroborate - Robert Bond Sep Qtr 1887 Wirral District).  The family was back in Liverpool for birth of next child in 1889.

The father's name was Samuel Bond.  In Liverpool he is always a general labourer or railway labourer - so I don't know if he would have made it into a directory.  But if someone is able to check I would love to find evidence of their time in Ellesmere Port.

He is not my direct line, so I am not eager to shell out the 7 pounds for a birth cert to get the address.   :-\  I have checked historicaldirectories.org, but there are none there from the right time period.

Many thanks,

MJP

Lancashire / May Smith b. Liverpool 1886 - update
« on: Thursday 18 January 07 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I am trying to trace Samuel Bond and May Smith, who married in Liverpool in 1906.  I have details on Samuel's parents etc... and have been able to trace them back through the census fairly easily.

May Smith is proving to be more difficult (of course!).  I have sent for the marriage cert to confirm her father's name, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone could find anything that fit with the following info (given to me by her son, who is still alive).

May Smith, born in Liverpool in 1886.
Father's name we think is George.  Mother's name unknown.
The mother died when May was "young" (don't know how young).  George later remarried to a lady whose surname started with R - first name unknown.
May had two siblings - older sister Helen (Nellie) and younger brother George.  May lived with Nellie for a while at some point - Nellie married a George William Smith (don't know if May lived with her before or after marriage).

I have been looking in the census and BMDs for families with these names in them, but so far nothing seems to fit.  (Of course being SMITHs doesn't help!)  There is a May Smith working as a servant in the 1901, but no way to tell if it is her...

I suppose I should be patient and wait for the marriage cert, but where is the fun in that?  ;D

Canada / LONGFIELD - North Dorchester Ontario
« on: Wednesday 08 November 06 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have reached an end with my Longfield line.  Other then trying to find a will, does anyone have any other suggestions for finding out where in England this family was from?

George Longfield b. circa 1821 in England

Married Alice Capstick circa 1845 in Ontario [rationale: the Capsticks arrived in Canada sometime between 1841 England census and birth of Alice's brother Richard 28 April 1843; first child of George and Alice Longfield born 1846]

-I can't find a marriage record for them in any of the collections on Ancestry or in the Upper Canada Marriage Bonds on the National Archives site.

George and Alice Longfield had 13 children - I have birth certs or christening records (in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptism records) for just about all of them I think.  None of the children's birth or marriage certificates offer any insight as to George's birthplace.

The Capsticks were from Westmorland, England, and settled in North Dorchester Twp. Middlesex Co.  That is also where George and Alice lived after their marriage.

1851 - George's birthplace is England

1871 - haven't seen the whole entry, but on index it just says b. England

1878 - George dies 29 Sep - birthplace on death certificate: England

There is also the family of Joseph and Dinah/Dianna Longfield in N. Dorchester at the same time.  Joseph was born circa 1801 England and Dinah circa 1821 in Canada.  On the 1851 census their eldest child was born 1840 in Ontario.  (Incidently, they are on the same census page as the Capsticks.) I don't know if Dinah is Joseph's second wife or what, but I feel that he must be related to George.  Although he is 20 years older, so kind of old to be a brother, kind of young to be his father - maybe his uncle?  Joseph and Dinah also had a very large family, but I have never seen any of the children referred to together (i.e. as cousins or something that would indicate a relationship between George and Joseph).

Based on the IGI and the English census records, the Longfield name seems to be concentrated in Yorkshire.  The IGI gives 2 George Langfields born about the right time, but I think I see both of them in later census records.  There are no relevant christenings of a Joseph Longfield.  The 1841 census is not much help either - a couple of possibles in Yorkshire, but they could be the ones from the IGI....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

US Lookup Requests / Census look-up 1900/10 Missouri
« on: Monday 02 October 06 18:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for a Mr and Mrs. Crump living in St. Louis Missouri 1900 - 1930.

Mrs. Crump's first name should be either Sarah or Margaret/Marguerite (registered name vs. usual name).  She was born 1873 in Toronto, Ontario. (Father born England, mother born Canada).

I don't know anything about Mr. Crump, except that his first-name initials may be J. W.

I don't think they had any children, but I'm not sure.

I also don't know when they married, so I'm not sure which census to start looking in.  I can't find Sarah/Margaret in the 1901 or 1911 in Canada.

Many thanks for anything you can turn up,

MJP
