World War One / Tracing 1st WW officer's history

I am looking for ways to prove or disprove that the Lt R P Kirkwood of the KOSB who was killed at the assault on Polderhoek Chateau near Gheluvelt (Ypres Rd) on the 4th October 1917, was in fact the son of John William Kirkwood also of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and its Co Sgt Mjr. I know that John and Mary Kirkwood had a son - Robert P Kirkwood who was born in Alexandria in 1889 but I have not so far thought of a way to prove that the two are one and the same. He would be my great uncle. The PRO has no records of Lt R P Kirkwood. Any ideas?
