Family History Beginners Board / George Henry Wiggins (Enfield).
« on: Tuesday 12 June 12 21:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am attempting to help a friend of mine who lives in the USA and does not possess a computer.

We are trying to find family relatives of:

George Henry Wiggins, who is my friends grandfather.

Married to Ethel Kate Tansley in 1913.

Children: Annie Ethel, Eric John and Muriel Joyce (who is my friends mother).

Census 1911: George is a border at 82 Sketty Road, Enfiled, Middx. He is a postman.

Census 1901: George is living at the Cowley Military Barracks, Oxford. A nineteen year old soldier in the Oxford & Buck's regiment. Shows his birth place as Stepney, London.

Census 1891: George is living at home with his father, George senior a labourer and his mother Anne, a shirt machinist. They live at 23 Cornwall Road, Stepney, in the district of Mile End, Old Town. The house is next door to the stables. George senior was from Clerkenwell and Anne from Somers Town.

Muriel Joyce was given up for adoption and moved away from the area to the North East of England. We are really looking for relatives of Annie Ethel and Eric John, both of whom my friend Barbara was unaware of, up until last year when we found George Wiggins WW1 Army records.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Steve

Family History Beginners Board / William Robert Jordan
« on: Monday 04 October 10 07:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for the family of William Robert Jordan. He was born on 05/11/1917 and was from Failsworth, near Oldham in Lancashire.

Basically he was a soldier in the 13th Kings Liverpool Regiment and served in Burma in 1943. He became a prisoner of war to the Japanese and was held in Rangoon Jail.

Sadly both he and my Grandfather died in Rangoon as POW's and this is the reason why I would like to find his family.

William was awarded the Military medal for his actions in Burma and this also may have some bearing on what happened to him and others back then.

Many thanks.

Steve.

World War Two / Rangoon Jail in WW2
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 20:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is only my 3rd post on the forum. My Grandfather, Arthur Leslie Howney was a Chindit in 1943 in Burma. He was captured by the Japanese in a small village in May 1943 and taken to Rangoon Jail. Here he died and was buried in Rangoon War Cemetery.

I am looking for other families who may have had loved ones lost in Rangoon Jail or in the 1943 Chindit Brigade. I have a fair amount of information on the jail and its POW's and would love to share this with other families of former inmates of the jail

Many thanks.

Steve.

World War Two / Chindits 1943

Hi all,

I am new on the forum and have been researching the Chindits of 1943. My Grandfather, Arthur Leslie Howney became one of these men in 1942 and went into Burma to fight behind Japanese lines.

I have a fairly large amount of information now for this operation and am looking for other families whose father's or Grandfather's fought with the group in 1943.

I have posted heavily on other forums, but have come on Rootschat to find more connections to what was an exceptionally brave group of soldiers in WW2.

Many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / military research, the Chindits 1943.
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 20:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is my first post after joining this forum. I have been researching my Grandfather, Arthur Leslie Howney for 3 years or so and have found out a great deal about his time in Burma in WW2.

He sadly died out there in June 1943, a member of the famous Chindits and 13th Kings Liverpool Regiment. He perished inside Rangoon Jail as a prisoner of the Japanese. I have been to the National Archives and have traced his journey very closely, I also went to Burma in 2008 to visit his grave and to see some of the places he may have fought in.

I now have a list of names of the men he served with and who were captured with him and in general also died in Rangoon.

The man I am particularly interested in is William Robert Jordan, from Failsworth near Oldham. He was awarded a Military medal for his actions in 1943 and I am keen to know the reasons for this award?

So my first post is to all you Jordan's out there, especially the ones who hail from Lancashire. Are you related to the Failsworth Jordan family?

Many thanks.
