Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 census - Aspinall
« on: Monday 26 September 05 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please help with a lookup in the 1851 Census in Lancashire. I’m having trouble finding birth and marriage records for Elijah Aspinall b: abt 1817, and his wife Elizabeth Radcliffe b: abt 1822. There is a record of an Elijah Aspinall marrying in Bolton in Sept. Qtr. 1845, but no spouse is mentioned. Death certificates in Victoria Aust. show that he was born in Bolton and Elizabeth was born in Leeds.

Shipping records tell us that Elijah came to Australia in Feb. 1855, and his wife and 2 children, Betsey 11, and Thomas Elijah, 8, followed in Feb. 1858. The death certificate of Elijah is unreadable only at the Issue section and shows an illegible word followed by “children”, then “names not known”.

The word in question appears to have a dot on an ‘i’ and could be five, six, eight or nine. We can only account for four children and wondered if one had died before they left England.

By my reasoning they should show as a family in 1851, as the death certificate of son Thomas shows his birthplace as Manchester.

I hope there is enough info for someone to assist.

Thanks

Laois (Queens) / Maryborough Prison??
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 14:39 BST (UK)  »
In 1849, my GGGrandfather, Joseph Day, was sentenced to 7 years transportation for malicious assault, (TR9, P139). Family notes and letters tell us that he was executed in Ireland after escaping from prison. We now believe that he was sent to Maryborough Prison, Laoghis, and I was hoping to find any record of his escape and subsequent death, whether legal execution or at the hands of soldiers or police as an escapee.

Facts at hand indicate that he would have escaped around June 1850. Can anyone suggest where I might find his trial record and any report of a prison breakout?

Library and FHS Lookups / Civil Registration Birth Index 1984 - 2000
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I was doing my routine checks today for any new info on Blackbell from Co. Durham & Northumberland, when I noticed that there is a reference to a birth in the 1984 -2000 register.  We thought the Blackbell name had disappeared from UK, so this is a complete surprise.

Thanks

Completed Census Requests / 1861 Census lookup
« on: Monday 25 July 05 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I was hoping someone could look up the details of four members of the Blackbell family named in the 1861 Census. They all lived in Co.Durham and Northumberland, but as they were seamen, it's possible that they could be anywhere in this census.

Thank you, AlanO,  Melbourne

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1871 census lookup Wales - Blackbell
« on: Friday 18 March 05 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping SKS could look up the Blackbell family in the 1871 Wales census please. While doing my monthly checks for new information I was directed to the Ancestry site which shows 3 members of the family in that census. I have a substantial record of the family in Co.Durham and Northumberland, but these new ones have slipped by me somehow. Thank you in anticipation.
