Lancashire Lookup Requests / Richard Lomas, bc1815
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi, some members were very helpful to me a few days ago but I'm still stuck and would be grateful if anyone could help.

Richard Lomas in the '41 was living in Manchester, aged 25 and is a fustian cutter with his wife Maria, nee Clough, aged 20.  He was born in the county.  Maria dies in 1843 and in 1849 he marries Maria Hindle.  In the '51 he's 36, a warehouseman and is born in Stockport.  Maria is 32 and born in Manchester.  In the '61 they're living in Stayley, born Stockport.  In the '71 he's 59, a packer living in Stayley born Stockport.

I sent off for the marriage of Richard to Maria Hindle but can't find anything about her as her father's name and occupation weren't given.  It did show Richard's father as Robert.

I can't find his birth or his father Robert and I can't find the birth of Maria Hindle.

Is anyone able to help please?  Thanks.

Note:  When he married Maria Clough, his father is William a miner but when he married Maria Hindle, it states Robert, a carter.  I've no idea ...???

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Maria Clough, b1819 Manchester
« on: Friday 19 April 24 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Maria Clough was my husband's 2xgreat grandmother born in Manchester.

In 1840 she married Richard Lomas, both full age, both living at Alport, Manchester.  Her father's name was Elisha Clough, a carter.

In the '41 Richard's age is given as 25 and Maria's 20.  They have Elizabeth a 9 month old daughter.  In the '51 she gives her age as 32, born in Manchester.  She now has a son, John as well as Elizabeth (although John's age is 6 and Elizabeth is 2 - maybe the first Elizabeth died?).  In the '61 her age is 42 and says born in Manchester so her age is consistent.

Who is Elisha, her father?  I can't find him and I can't find her mother.  Can anyone help?

I've got the marriage but can't attach as the file is too large.

Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Joseph Platt bc1850, Manchester, England
« on: Monday 15 January 24 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Revisiting the 2nd great grandfather of my husband.

Emma Platt b1855 married Robert Fouchard on 28 December 1907 in Hulme, both 22 years old.  Father's name given as Joseph Platt, labourer.  We know these facts are true.

For the last 15 years, we've assumed a certain Joseph Platt but are now questioning.

Without trying to draw anybody in with what might be false information, can anyone take a fresh look please to find the right Joseph?

Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / James Fitzgerald, born c1780, Liverpool
« on: Friday 08 October 21 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Mary Fitzgerald was the fourth g grandmother of my husband.  She was born on 14 February 1802 and baptised at St Mary's RC Church, Liverpool on 21 February 1802.  It shows her father as James Fitzgerald and mother Helen.

I'd really like to find the marriage of James and Helen to find her surname.

It would appear that St Mary's was founded in 1707 and records are at the Liverpool Records Office, but I can't work out how to access.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :-)

Oxfordshire / Hemming family
« on: Sunday 15 March 20 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning all.

Having started this family history malarkey about ten years ago, I think I've made an error going up from my 3 x great grandfather, William Hemming.  One of his sons, Thomas b1830 Chipping Norton was my 2 x great grandfather.  In the '41 census, Thomas was with father William, b1784 out of county and a groom, mother Martha b1796 Oxfordshire and siblings.  I'm happy with that.  In the '51 William is now widowed (I believe that Martha died 1849 in Chipping Norton), b1783 in "Shearsby, Warwickshire" and a labourer.  No place of that name exists in Warwickshire so I think that's a transcription error.  William has two daughters and two grandchildren living with him in Chipping Norton. In the '61, he is a retired coachman, b1781 in Studley, Warwickshire.  He's living with his son, William b1822 in Chipping Norton.

So who is William?  I've found a marriage of a William Hemming to a Martha Derrick in 1810 in Evesham but that would make Martha 14 so unlikely  ??? .  I also can't find a birth of a Martha Derrick.

There's probably something obvious I've missed here but I've got brain fog and can't move forward.

Thanks.

Sussex / East/Peadle family of Northiam/Rye in Sussex in 1600s
« on: Friday 28 July 17 20:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help?

Constance Peadle, born 1656 in Rye was married to James Vigor.  They were my 6xgreat-grandparents.  Constance was born to John Peadle and "Dorothy" East who were married in 1654 in Rye.

I've looked for Dorothy's birth and have found the birth of a Dorothia to a Guliemli East in Northiam in 1628.  She appears to have two sisters, Ann born 1623 and Maria born 1625.

How do I find the mother to the three girls?

Thanks.

Argyllshire / Lochgilphead in the mid 1950s
« on: Wednesday 17 May 17 09:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, hoping someone can help here.

Trying to look for my father's family (he was illegitimate).  I think a Miss McMillan may be one of them.  She was living in Glasgow and working as a bus conductress but when she gave birth to a child (out of wedlock), she gave her address as Blarburie Farm.

I've tried Googling but can't find it.

Can anyone help decipher the name of the farm and how we find out who the farming family were?

Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Joseph Russell & Maria Ball
« on: Monday 14 November 16 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me find more information about my second great grandparents.

The censuses show that Joseph was born c1811 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and Maria born c1813 also in Wycombe.  I've found a text only marriage on 28th October 1832 in West Wycombe of a Joseph to a Maria Ball.

I can't find their births and can't find their parents.  As they were consistent about being born in Wycombe, I'm believing that, but there are two Nottingham baptisms for the right names and years ...

Any help much appreciated.  Thanks.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Seamer (Seymor) Redenton (Ridington)
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please.

Ann Ridenton was my 4th great-grandmother.  She was baptised 27 May 1798 in Hunsdon, Hertfordshire.  Her baptism shows her father as being Seamer Redenton and Sarah her mother.

I've found a marriage of Seymor Ridenton to Sarah Graves on 14 January 1793 in Widford, Hertfordshire.

I can't find anything more about Seamer/Seymor, his birth, for example.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks  :)
