Warwickshire / Mary Ann Edith Holland born Aston 1918
« on: Monday 04 July 16 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know more about this person?
She was my First Cousin twice removed.
I know for certain that she was born on 16 July 1918 at 43 Barrows Road Aston. I have the Registration Certificate from Aston in Birmingham: Father Henry Ewart Holland Toolmaker; mother Sarah nee Geering. Birth is also on GRO Aston 1918 3Q 6d 559.
According to family recollections her mother Sarah was a Professional Mezzo Soprano Singer with the City of Birmingham Choir and it is said that Mary Ann Edith was also a professional opera? singer.
Mary Ann Edith's parents are well documented, but apart from her birth details I have found absolutely no information about their daughter Mary Ann Edith.
It is possible that she was with her parents when the 1939 Register was taken. The parents are at 43 Barrows Road with a son Ernest b 1924. One other person is not shown, possibly Mary as she is less than 100 years old.
Any further info would be gratefully appreciated.

Updated Request. Thank you Capetown for your information, fills many gaps. Looks as though poor Hannah Stiles died as a result of birth of her 10th child in 22 years.
My record of the marriage of John Bevington to Ann Castles (Cassells) at Claines in 1820 looks wrong. The date is probably about right, but Ann & the children born around then were all at WSE. 25 miles from Claines. No info found on John's birth (1798?) apart from burial at WSE in 1833 age 35. Any advice much appreciated

It's a rather complicated Jigsaw puzzle of where various children associated with William Gould came from and I'd appreciated any comments or corrections to my deductions as well as any additions.
William was possibly baptised on 3 Feb 1790 at St Lawrence Church Evesham, the son of Samuel & Sarah Gould.

A church record from Weston Sub Edge Gloucestershire has a marriage of William Gould widower to an Ann Bevington widow on 29 Dec 1836.
The 1841 census has them at Weston Sub Edge together with children Joshua b 1829; Alfred b 1831; Caroline b 1838. There are also Isabella Bevington b 1826 and John Bev. b 1831.

In 1851 William was a widower at WSE with Alfred b 1830 and daughter Caroline b 1838

There is a burial record for a William Gould at WSE on 17 Mar 1871. His wife Ann was buried on 27 Aug 1845 at WSE.

In addition the Weston Sub Edge Parish Register, has a baptism on 1 Mar 1818 of David Bevington, mother Ann Castles, a spinster. David was my great X2 Grandfather and this led me to find out more about his origins.
His mother Ann was possibly baptised on 23 Sept 1792 at Mickleton which is about 3 miles from WSE. She married a John Bevington, possibly at Clains near Worcester on 3 Jan 1820. As well as David, she had six children with John: Joshua 1820; Isabella 1823; and John 1831. In addition she had an earlier John in 1825; Emanuel in 1822 and Ann 1831. These all died before 1841.

John Bevington was buried on 12 Dec 1833 in WSE. and his wife Ann subsequently married William Gould a widower as noted in 1836 at WSE

Now where did children Alfred; Joshua b abt 1829 & Caroline noted in the 1841 census come from? William Gould was married to someone before Ann and Hannah Styles appears to fit. Hannah was baptised on 4 Mar 1792 at WSE and married a William Gould at the age of 16 on 6 Feb 1809 at Willersey, a couple of miles from WSE.

WSE Parish records have William & Hannah Gould as parents of a Joshua Bap. 1827 and Alfred in 1830. Willersey Parish records also have them as parents of Eliza, Bap. 1810. Eliza probably married and left her parents before the 1841 census.
Hannah was buried on 14 Aug 1832 at WSE, leaving William to marry Ann in 1836.

That leaves Caroline b 1838 to account for - the WSE parish records have her baptised on 31 Jul 1837, parents William & Anne.

So that just about seems to complete the jigsaw puzzle of where the various children originated. However my question is that after having Eliza at the age of 16 in 1810, there is a big gap before Hannah Gould nee Stiles has her next child Joshua in 1827. Have I got something wrong in my deductions? Note that publicly available Family Tree information on Ancestry appears to contain anomalies and has no mention of Hannah Styles.

I would be interested if anyone could fill gaps in, identify with, or correct this story of a chap who seemed to play fast & loose with his identity. His name was George Geering and he was my Great Great Uncle.
Briefly he appears to have abandoned his first wife, had a child by "Wife" no 2 and then skipped off to New York to illicitly marry a wife no 3 before taking up a quiet life in Weston Super Mare.
It has taken me some time to try to sort out his convoluted life and it goes on a bit, but here goes:

The early years. He was baptised in Birmingham on 1 July 1849 to Henry Geering and Harriet nee Hunt. His parents both originated from Westham/Pevensey in Sussex. The family was to run a major manufacturer of Brass Bedsteads and Safes in B'ham. In the 1851 and 61 Censuses the family including George were living in Birmingham with nothing untoward about the census data.

Wife No. One. On 28 Sept 1870 he married an Ellen Inchley at St Marks B'ham. George describes himself as a Lithographer, father Henry a Bedstead Manufacturer. Ellen had been baptised on 18 Jun 1848 in B'ham and in the 1851 & 61 Censuses is living with her parents Joseph and Ann.
The 1871 Census has George & Ellen Gerring living in Dudley St B'ham, George a Lithographer born in Warwickshire. Nothing amiss here.
In 1875 the Geering family's Apollo Safe Business goes bust in Birmingham (several reports in the London Gazette). Our George is described as a salesman for the company.

Wife No. Two The 1881 Census for Nelson Terrace, Stockton on Tees indicates that George is starting to go astray. He is listed as an Artist (Painter) born in 1851 in Pevensey Sussex with a wife Sarah Geering b 1851 in Cowbridge Glamorgan Wales.  No marriage Certificate found. Strange - what's happened to Ellen and although George's parents came from Pevensey he was born in Birmingham?
The 1891 census lists at Richmond Terrace Penkhull (Part of Stoke on Trent) a George Geering Widower, Lithographer b 1851 Pevensey. No sign of Sarah. There is a daughter Nelly age 9 born Stockton and a niece Elizabeth Jordan, dressmaker b Croydon 1864. I have a birth certificate for Nelly from Stockton born 29 Jan 1882. Father George Geering a Lithographer, mother Sarah Geering nee David.
That gave me a clue to finding out about Sarah. The 1851 & 1862 Censuses have a Sarah David born 1847 in Cowbridge. She also has a sister Elizabeth born 1839. The 1881 Census for Cowbridge lists an Elizabeth Jordan, widow, b 1840 Cowbridge together with her daughter Elizabeth b 1864 Croydon. The younger Eliz will be the one living with George in the 1891.
Sarah died on 5 April 1891 at Penkhull Stoke, death reported by "husband" George Geering a potter's artist.
So it appears that George abandoned first wife Ellen some time before the birth of Nellie by Sarah in Stockton in 1882. In the 1881 census Ellen is at Hickman Rd Aston B'ham as Ellen Greening married living with her widowed father Joseph Inchley and also her sister Emily Prime. She then disappears from the radar until the 1911 Census when she pops up as a licenced victualler running the Railway Station Tearooms at Abingdon Oxfordshire! I'm sure this is her, because the next year there is a probate record for an Ellen Inchley, died 23 Oct 1912 who left £180 to Emily Prime (her sister).

Ayrshire / Thomas Campbell & Helen Muir of Kilmaurs - Parish Records of Birth?

Thomas Campbell & Helen Muir of Kilmaurs - Parish Records of Birth?

My Great x3 Grandparents, Thomas Kennedy Campbell and Helen Muirs, had a son also named Thomas Kennedy Campbell born 22 Nov 1799, baptised 22 June 1800 at Kilmaurs Ayrshire. I have an image of the Parish Record from Scotland's People. Father Thomas is named as an Officer of Excise.
Family Search also has this record but no other children of Thomas & Helen. Thomas Junior is found on the 1841,51, 61 & 71 Censuses living at Maryhill Glasgow. His first wife was a Grace Smith married 1828 in Eaglesham, she died in 1857. In 1859 Thomas married a Janet McKenzie McEwan. A copy of the statutory wedding certificate states that he was the son of Thomas Campbell a deceased Exciseman and Helen Muir deceased. So I believe that I have a reliable record of the life of Thomas Junior.

My problem is finding out more about Thomas senior and Helen. I cannot find any record of a marriage - maybe they never married.
The IGI (film no 457728) has a genealogical record of the birth of Thomas Junior. Mother named as Helen Muir, birth about 1777 Kilmaurs; father Thomas Campbell, birth about 1773 Kilmaurs. I don't know where the person who submitted this got the information on the dates & place of birth of Thomas's parents.
Perhaps someone knows where or if I can find Kilmaurs Parish records of births in the 1770s? There are births on Family Search and Scotland's People which may fit, but none are very likely.
Thanks for your help.

Lanarkshire / HOWISON Agnes b c1778
« on: Friday 29 May 15 12:55 BST (UK)  »
An Agnes Howison (or Howieson) who married (probably not formally) a John Crawford around 1800 was my Great great great Grandmother.
There has been some earlier correspondence on Agnes Howison, but none as far as I am aware covering this issue.
I have off Scotland's People good quality scans of Parish Records for the birth of Agnes Howison stated to be in Lanark Parish. Identical summaries are also on Family Search.

The first Parish Record is for 1778 and states: "Agnes. Lawful Daur. to John Howison and Mary Duncan Born 5th of December 1778"
There is no mention of any baptism. Some records on the same page for other (but not all) children also record a Baptism date.

There is another record on a later page of the Parish Records for Lanark in 1786:
"Agnes. Lawful Daur. to John Howison and Mary Duncan Born 12th and Baptised 16 January 1786"

At first sight it appears that the first Agnes died as a young child and a later child was again named Agnes.
Family Search lists John Howison and Mary Duncan as having nine children starting with a James b 2 Sep 1775. Both Agneses are listed and there are two Johns one born 1777 and another, presumably a 'replacement' b 1883. Interestingly all except the first Agnes are listed as having been baptised within a few days of birth.

So far so good. However I can find no later records of what happened to Agnes no 2 born 1786

What appears to be Agnes no 1 born 1778 is listed in the 1841 & 1851 Censuses
In 1841 at Reform Court Gorbals we have John Crawford b 1771 Lanarkshire with Agnes Howieson b 1781 Lanarkshire with three children
In 1851 at 24 Portugal Street Gorbals we have John Crawford a journeyman Tailor b 1770 Carmichael Lanarkshire with Agnes Crawford b 1778 Carnwath Lanarkshire.

Family Search lists John Crawford & Agnes as having 10 Children born in Pettinain including my Great great grandfather Andrew b 1806, confirmed by a Pettinain Parish Record from Scotland's People. Their first child John was born in Sept 1800. If his mother was Agnes no 1 she would have been about 22, if Agnes no 2 only 14 years old.

I wonder how accurate the Parish Records from Scotland's People are for the birth of Agneses 1 & 2. The records are stated to be for "Lanark" and appear to be from a later summary of original records.  The 1778 & 1786 pages are in a similar format and handwriting and are not in strict chronological order. For example children born in Oct 1778 are listed after others born in December. Also what is "Lanark Parish". Census and birth records for "my" Crawfords indicate that the family lived around Pettinain & Carnwath in Lanarkshire which are around Carstairs over 10km east of Lanark.

Anyone else got any similar questions about Scotland's People's "Lanark Records" for that period?

Any comments would be much appreciated

David McGraddie (All sorts of spellings) born Ireland about 1785 was my Great Great Grandfather. He produced four children at Busby in Renfrewshire in the period 1830 - 1841, including my Great Grandfather James McCready in 1841
Their mother was an Elizabeth Long baptised, as far as I can ascertain, on 13 Sept 1802 at Ballynagalliagh Armagh Ireland. David and Elizabeth may not have married, but census, her death & their marriage certs of the children all support this relationship.

Now the interesting thing is that apparently the same David McGraddie is noted in various sources as the father of four other children. Three were born in Ireland: William in 1805; Thomas in abt 1808; Hugh in abt 1811. (I can't find any baptism records)
A fourth child, David was born in 1815 in Mearns (close to Busby) in Renfrewshire, so David snr appears to have moved from Ireland in the period around 1811 - 1815
This makes me think that David McGraddie snr had another wife before he linked up with Elizabeth Long in about 1829. It's very unlikely that this Elizabeth could be the mother of David's first four children.
Census and other records for David's first four children consistently name their mother as Margaret Lang born Ireland around 1793. An example is a FamilySearch tree: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/M7K3-9CZ
I cannot find any record of Margaret Lang's birth or marriage
If available, this information might in turn lead to more information on the origins of David McGraddie/McCready. I suspect he and Margaret Lang came from the Ballynagalliagh, Lisnadill and Killyfaddiy area a few Km south of Armagh City as his second "wife" Elizabeth came from round there.
At one time I thought that Margaret Lang and Elizabeth Long might be sisters, Lang & Longcould be the same family. However there is a fair amount of info to say that Elizabeth's parents were a John Lang b ~1776 & Frances Ross b ~1780. They married in 1802 and are unlikely to be the parents of Margaret Lang.

I'd be very pleased if anyone is able to throw any futher light on the life of Margaret Lang and her possible links to David McGraddie/McCready.
Thanks Watersidejim

Lanarkshire / James McCready 1872 - 1957
« on: Wednesday 11 December 13 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of, or have links to, my grandfather James McCready? I know quite a few facts about his life, but would love to know of any additional information or stories.
He was born the son of a James McCready & Mary Crawford on 1 Feb 1872 at Bridgeton Glasgow.
I have the 1881 (68 Doncaster St), 1891 (778 New City Rd), 1901(202 N Woodside Rd) and 1911 (9 Doncaster St) census returns.
He married my grandmother Agnes Chrystal Cochran on 10 June 1898 at Rollox Glasgow. They had my father James Buchanan Cochrane in 1899. After Agnes's death in 1923 he married Catherine Mitchell Sinclair on 5 April 1924 at Cathcart Glasgow. Around this time he was living in Dalmuir, then there is a big blank in his life.
He died on 18 Oct 1957 at 157 Shamrock St Glasgow.
I have certificates for all of these events and can let anyone with a close interest have copies. He seems to have spent his life as an Iron Turner and the 1911 Census says he worked at the well known Argyle Motor Works.
If anyone can help me paint a better picture of his life around this framework, I would be most grateful. Thanks

Renfrewshire / David McCready family early 1800s
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
David McCready was my Great Great Grandfather.
I have quite a lot of information on his descendants but know nothing of his origins.
The 1841 Census probably has him at Main Street, Thomson's Land, Mearns near Busby Renfrewshire as David McGradie Ag Lab age 50  with wife Bettie age 40, both born Ireland. Children James 2m, Janet 5, Isobel 11 all born Renfrewshire.
In 1851 he seems to be David McGraddie at 68 Commercial road Gorbals Lanarkshire, widower, lime burner age 61 with children James 10, Janet 14 & Esabella age 18. There is also an Elisa Lang a lodger & widow? age 50 born Ireland. I suspect Elisa is actually David's wife.
1866 I have a Death Cert from Scotland's people for Elizabeth McCready died 29 Sept in Glasgow age 67, widow of David McCready a Carding Master, her maiden name Long, reported by James McCready her son. I believe it is highly likely that she was "my" David McCready's wife.

I can find no record of any marriage between David  McGradie/McGraddie/McCready and an Elizabeth/Bettie/Eliza  Long/Lang or any reliable information about their origins in Ireland

I have not found any parish records of the birth of their children or the death of their father, but have various marriage and death records of these children which conform their parents as David McCready and Elizabeth Long under various spellings

Be most grateful to receive any ideas or leads. Thanks

Cheshire / Herbert Henry Harbord Field b 1886 Birkenhead
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Herbert Henry Harbord Field b 1886 Birkenhead was most probably my wife's grandfather.
He was something of a Romeo and appears to have fathered at least two children by different women, neither of whom he married.
The 1911 Census has him living as a window cleaner at 106 Harrowby Road Tranmere, with his widowed mother Florence.
The first lady we know of was Amy Kathleen Howarth and she gave birth to Olga Gertrude Field-Howarth at Birkenhead in 1913.
The other was Annie Davies who gave birth to Herbert Harbord Davies (my wife's father) at Chester in 1917.
After that Herbert HH Field seems to have disappeared without trace. There was talk that he went to Australia or possibly N America but searches of shipping records etc have yielded nothing. Of course he may have changed his name.

Anyone out there who knows of this person, perhaps he fathered others we have yet to unearth?
