Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1851 Census place name
« on: Saturday 28 September 19 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello
On the 1851 census Mary Davies, wife of Thomas Davies, is in Scotswood, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with their children Phoebe, Richard, Jane and Ann. Mary's place of birth is what I am struggling with. She died in 1854 so this is the only record of her birth place I can find and it is, to me at least, indecipherable. Thomas's birth place is given as Montgomery which together with the surname Davies suggests Montgomery, Wales. Phoebe was born in Sandbach, Cheshire which is near the Welsh border. So far so good.
Complications set in with the 1861 census which finds Thomas still in Newcastle with a new wife but with birth place recorded as Scotland. Newcastle of course is not far from the Scottish border.
Mary's birth place looks as though it begins Carr__ and possibly ending with ___tree and has a second word that at a pinch could be a squashed up Montgomery. Nothing fits that name in the Montgomery, Wales area.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Europe / Gunnar Aadnesen born Lillesand, Norway 1881
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 17:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information about Gunnar Aadnesen who spent a lot of his life travelling through South America and who wrote a book ("Green Light For Adventure" originally published in Norwegian as "Gront Lys For Eventyret") about his travels. He died in the 1950s/60s probably in Norway but can anyone confirm that? He is recorded in the 1885 Norway census and crops up in emigration records.
Is there a digital archive of Norwegian newspapers that could be searched online for articles or an obituary? Maybe there are forums in Norway that would help with my search? I would have thought a character like this must have left a digital footprint but virtually nothing comes up in search engines.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / James Everett b. Normanton c.1854
« on: Monday 28 July 14 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Having  a lot of difficulty finding the birth and parents/siblings of James Everett who according to the 1911 census when he was living in Barnsley,Yorkshire was born in Normanton Derbyshire. In 1911 he described himself as a labourer aged 58 and married to Sarah Ann for 20 years, aged 48 b.Staleybridge, Lancs. Also present was their daughter Ellen aged 11 b. Heckmondwike, Yorkshire in 1900.
They were also in Barnsley for the 1901 census but their places of birth seem to have been transposed by one line. If so his p.o.b. is given as Derby and he was a stone quarry labourer aged 53.
Despite months of looking I have found no record of a birth for any of them nor a marriage. The Family hearsay is that Ellen never had a birth certificate. They seemed to travel around a lot and a few months after her birth in Heckmondwike they were in lodgings in Barnsley so perhaps she wasn't registered.
If the 1911 census is to be believed they were married around 1891 but no luck anywhere. The surname is variously spelled Everett, Everitt, Everatt and variations of those. They would have been in their 30s by that time so maybe they were previously married?
Can anybody help find James in Normanton in the 1850s?

Essex Lookup Requests / James Sexton Everett b.185?
« on: Friday 25 July 14 11:29 BST (UK)  »
Having trouble tracing James Sexton Everett (sometimes spelled Everitt and often with the Sexton middle name omitted). I have him married to Ellen Summons Hindley (at St Saviours,Southwark in 1880) and living in Normanton,Derbyshire in the 1880s and several baptisms are registered there.
I would like to know his parents and siblings. I believe he was born in Essex around 1853 but drawing a blank so far.

Many thanks.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Coroner's reports
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 16:36 BST (UK)  »
I have a George Lockwood buried Barnsley Cemetery November 1958 whose register entry says he was "found drowned at Wombwell". I have tried the Barnsley Chronicle around that date for the circumstances of the death but have found no newspaper report.
An unexplained death such as this would presumably have been subject to an inquest and coroner's report. Does anyone know if these records are available and if so how to access them?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Ellen Redford b.1864 St Pancras, Middlesex
« on: Friday 12 April 13 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Ellen Redford appears in the 1871 census aged 7 with her parents William and Emma Redford and brothers Charles and George and sister Martha at an address in Sharples Hall, Marylebone. Thereafter there is no trace in further censuses or record of a marriage or death. Can anyone trace her?
I have two leads which may not be right; the first is she may have married a German immigrant called Gustavus (no surname) who arrived in England about 1890. The second is that she may have been living in the Brighton area in the 1930s. Any help gratefully received.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Catholic marriages in Leeds
« on: Monday 10 September 12 12:06 BST (UK)  »
Trying to establish the father of John Cunningham born in Ireland around 1845 and who appears in the 1871 census in 10 East Queen Street, Leeds married to Margret also born in Ireland about 1843. A marriage to a Margaret Kennedy took place in Leeds in 1865 Jun qtr. which could be the correct one because I have another link to a Kennedy family but I can't find this marriage in the parish register. Do these include Catholic marriages?

Need help in tracing members of the family of James Currill b. 1840 Garsington, Oxfordshire and Hannah Hillsdon b. 1844 Garsington, Oxfordshire. They had two daughters I am trying to trace; Maritta Maria Currill or Hillsdon (she appears as Currill in censuses but gave her name as Hillsdon on her marriage record) and Emma Emily (or Emily Emma) Currill.
Maritta married William Henry Kellet in Leeds in 1887. He died in 1893. She appears in the 1891 census in Leeds Infirmary as Maritta Kellet, Patient, Mar, 30, born Garsington, Oxfordshire. Then she disappears.
Emma Emily b. 1863 Garsington, Oxfordshire is not with her father and stepmother Fanny in 1881 and the only trace is a marriage to either Edward Stead or Joseph Whiteley in Bramley in 1885 when she is referred to as Emily Emma Currill. Thereafter nothing. They may have emigrated, her half sister Annie went to Canada, but nothing has turned up yet.
Any clues will be appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Kensington & Chelsea marriage 1923
« on: Friday 27 April 12 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Looking for parents of Patrick William Stone who married Kathleen Mary Davies Mar qtr 1923
(Kensington 1a, 251).  Other than buying the marriage certificate are the Kensington archives online?

Patrick was born in 1899 in Taganrog, Russia to British parents. He appears in the 1911 census as a visitor in Robert Ernest Scholefield's London home but no trace of him in 1901 so perhaps still in Russia.
Do overseas births of British citizens have to be registered in the UK?
He spent some time in the British navy in the 1920s so perhaps his father was in the armed forces or government service? In the 1930s he crossed the Atlantic several times as a merchant of some kind before settling in the US around 1930.
Any additional information about him or his parents would be very welcome.
