Yorkshire (North Riding) / Thomas Clean
« on: Friday 08 December 23 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
In my tree I have a Thomas Clean, Shoemaker of Ness, and a record of a son, William been christened at Hovingham in 1770. Although I have not been able to trace anything on Thomas before this , I have
come across several generations of a family called Clean in the Riccall area, including a Thomas, shoemaker, born 1736, died and buried Riccall in 1810.
Is it possible that there is a connection, did tradesmen travel around, did they have to be members of a guild or similar? It's not too far between these places, and while the dates would fit, it may be a
stretch of the imagination to put these together.
Could anyone please help with either a positive or negative response, thank you.

Northamptonshire / Sarah Ann Dennis
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone can give me anything at all on a Sarah Ann Dennis, born approx 1831 Peterborough.  I have nothing on her until 1865 when she is living in Osbaldwick, near York, married to a George Smith. They now have two daughters, Emily born 1863 and Louisa born 1865, Louisa going on to marry and was my wife's great grandmother.
The census returns from 1871 onwards  show the family moving around from York to Kippax near Leeds and on to Spofforth near Wetherby, and show George born Lincoln and Sarah born Peterborough. I cannot find any trace for either of them  in the census for 1841, 1851,1861, or any details of births, marriage, parents etc.
Can anyone out there offer any assistance please,
  Thanks.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Christopher Smith of Langtoft Yorkshire
« on: Friday 26 May 23 14:09 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can add more details to the few I have regarding this person, please.
He was born and Christened in December 1786 in Langtoft East Yorks., his father was James, b.1755, and I believe his mother was Ann (possibly Brown ?) He Married a woman Called Mary....no other info. on where, when or her surname, and they seem to have had only one child, Alice, (some entries show 'Ellis'), born April 1810, again in Langtoft. Christopher died and was buried Sept. 1831, age 45 Langtoft.
If any one can fill in any blanks, I would be very grateful.
  Thank you,

Essex / Ruth Griggs
« on: Thursday 06 October 22 13:50 BST (UK)  »
I hope that someone may be able to shed some background details on this person please.
From various searches I have details of Ruth Griggs marrying a William Raine 1/2/1813 at St.Mary Magdelene, Colchester, before moving north to Romaldkirk in North Yorkshire where they spent the rest of their lives and had seven children. The 1851 census indicates that Ruth was born in Colchester,
and on her death in December 1859, her age is shown as 80, which would indicate a birth of 1779, or thereabouts, allowing for minor discrepancies.
So far I have only come across two people with this name, both in Elsenham, one bapt 1/5/1768, and a second bapt 30/9/1810. There is also a marriage in Elsenham 13/10/1788, groom named as Robert Speller.
Does anyone have anything at all on the correct Ruth please, I don't think either of these fit the bill unless there is a piece missing somewhere...second marriage ?, mispellng ? incorrect dates shown?.. something that would lead to Ruth's family background.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Mary Smith of Bulmer
« on: Thursday 29 September 22 16:02 BST (UK)  »
I know that anyone with the name Smith can be very difficult to trace, but I live in hope that someone, somewhere may have a gem of information.
My 3x G/Grandmother was Mary Smith, born approx 1769, shown Bulmer. She married William Maclean, (spelling varies) in March 1798 in Norton, Malton N. Yorks, and died in Allerston near Pickering in March 1867, age 98.
The nearest I have come to any background was a Mary Smith bapt 14/2/1773 in Bulmer, parents Charles and Margaret, and whilst this does not agree with her age throughout the census returns, it could still be correct as it was not uncommon for children to be baptised several years after being born.
Is there anyone out there who would be able to confirm/deny/clarify that This Mary Smith is the person I am looking for, or any other information that may be helpful, please.
  Thank you

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Christopher Smith of Langtoft
« on: Monday 10 January 22 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
Christopher Smith, born 17/12/1786, Christ. 25/12/1786 both Langtoft....was a blacksmith and a private in the 10th regiment of foot, died age 45 and was buried 6/9/1831 Langtoft.
I believe his father was James, mother possibly Ann Brown ?, and his wife's name was Mary...no other details. I have only found evidence of one child, Alice ( shown Ellis on her marriage cert.), born April 1810.
Can anyone please fill in any blanks for his parents, wife, and any other possible children...any dates, places etc.
  Thank you

Lancashire / Ann Ratcliffe of Liverpool
« on: Thursday 16 September 21 15:09 BST (UK)  »
i am hoping that someone may be able to fill in the missing details I have on Ann and her immediate family, please
Ann was born 22/7/38 in Liverpool and christened 2/8/1838 at St. Peters Liverpool, her parents are shown as James and Elizabeth. Ann went on to marry in Leeds in 1858 and seemed to spend the rest of her life there. Her father, James was born in 1806 in Salford, and the only marriage I can find for him is 18/10/1846, when he married an Elizabeth Greenlees at Manchester Cathedral .....they were shown as widower and widow, with her father being shown as John Hall, indicating her maiden name would have been Elizabeth Hall and that her husband Mr. Greenlees had died. The 1851 census shows the Ratcliffe  family living in Pitfield Stret, Hunslet, Leeds, and along with Ann, age 12 there are two sons James, age 7 and Felix, age 6...born born in France.
I cannot find Ann in 1841 census.
I cannot find a marriage for James before 1846.
I cannot find a marriage for Elizabeth Hall/Greenlees before 1846
Is it coincidence that Ann's mother was also called Elizabeth, or were  Eliz. Greenlees and James together before they actually married?
How do the births of the two boys in France fit into the picture ?
Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hebden Family
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 14:48 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone may be able to help me locate Clara Hebden, her parents and siblings in 1891, please.
Clara was born in Leeds in 1875, daughter of Joseph Hebden and his wife Jane, (nee Smith).
In 1881 they lived in Hunslet, Leeds and after marrying Charles Dixon  in 1898, Clara seemed to spend the rest of her life in the Leeds area. However, between 1882 and 1886 there were two more children born to Joseph and Jane.....
Emily in 1884 and James Moore Hebden in 1886...both  in Hampshire . The family then reappeared in Leeds in 1901.
I have been unable to trace any members of the family in 1891...they could be in Hampshire or could have returned North before 1891.

 Can anyone help please ?

 Thanks.
