Hi Chatters,

May I please have a clean-up on this photo? It was taken in Alaska about 1906 and I'd like it to maintain it as a b&w or sepia - whichever will provide the sharpest image. Sincere thanks for your help.

Thanks very much.

Hello Chatters,

I would love to see my great-grandparents after you work your magic.

Black and white is preferred as I want to use it on the cover of a booklet I'm making about their emigration from Scotland to Canada.

Thank you very much for any improvement you can make.

Aberdeenshire Completed Lookups / SOLVED How do I obtain an 1896 will?
« on: Sunday 21 January 24 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters,

How do I go about obtaining a copy of an actual will and is it, by chance, online?

These are the details I have from the National Probate Index:

Innes Berry Prosser of Lochhead, Parish of Skene died 22 October 1896. Executor was named 3 October 1896, and the matter was recorded in Court Book of Commissariot of Aberdeen 22 Apr 1897.

I looked on ScotlandsPeople, National Archives and FamilySearch without success. I can't see a way of searching the Registers of Scotland.

Thanks for any direction you can provide. :)

Hi Chatters

This image is from a tiny, poor photo that is included in my great great grandmother's photo album. I believe it is her eldest half sister Isabella Hardie 1849-1899. (The scan was provided to me a few years ago as one of 10 images on a single page. I can't get a better scan of Isabella alone.)

I hope someone can clean it up and make it a bit crisper, please. I'd like to use it in a black & white personal family history booklet.

Thanks in advance for your efforts. :)

Aberdeenshire / Ordinance Maps for Tyrie Parish
« on: Friday 15 December 23 17:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters,  :)

I'm looking for help locating an ordinance map (or similar b&w image) for Tyrie Parish that shows New Pitsligo, Balnamoon Croft and Balnamoon manor house / farm. The time frame that I'm seeking is anything between 1860 and 1915. The map needs to be downloadable with reasonable resolution.

I've located ordinance maps on the National Library of Scotland site, but can't seem to narrow any of them to the specific geography I'm seeking.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for old black & white maps that show what I'm looking for, please?

Hi Chatters,

What are your thoughts on the date of this photograph and could it have been a reprint?

This photo is labelled as grandfather to William Harcus Inkster (1877-1968). His maternal grandfather died in 1867, so that eliminates that option, and appears to reference John Inkster (1800-1880).

The man in the photo doesn't look close to 80, and the photographer was in Edinburgh around 1879. It made me wonder if the photo was a reprint of one taken earlier ... mind-you, I'm not sure that was a thing back then.

I welcome your thoughts on the date for this photo, so that credence can be given to it being John Inkster.

Thank you, RedMystic

Hi fabulous photo restorers

Please bring out the detail in this portrait (or do you think its moody detail was intended?)

It was taken in Edinburgh, Scotland of a woman who originated in Shetland. She lived 1835-1918.

The back of the photo says: Grandma Inkster, This picture was posed for a display in Robt. Forbes Photograph Studio in Edinburgh.

I look forward to your magic. :)

Hello Chatters

Thanks in advance for your help putting a date to this photo and then adding a b&w clean-up and a coloured version. A refreshed image will be used to try to identify the two women.

This photo was one of several "rescued" from an album tossed on a beachside bonfire on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska in the early-1970s. I suspect the photo was 30-40 years old at that time, perhaps taken between 1930 & 1940 .... but I'm no expert.

The women are natives of Southeast Alaska, as is the man who pulled the photos from the fire. He would love a clean-up so that every effort can be made to try to identify the happy beauties. (The population on Prince of Wales and surrounding islands was pretty small at the time the photo was taken, so the options for this task aren't as daunting as they might be in a more populous area.)

Thanks again for your clean-up efforts. The expertise of the RootsChat photo restorers never ceases to amaze me. :)

United States of America / Washington Territory Census
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chatters

I need a hand with accessing Washington Territory census please.

What I'd like to be able to view is any census records (federal and territorial) for Wahkiakum County, beginning with the earliest (1857 I think) and ending with 1910.

I want to be able to scroll through the entire county, reviewing every page line by line.  (On the Washington State Archive site, I can only pull up individual pages in pdf if I enter a name, so can't move on to subsequent pages.)

More specifically, I'd like to locate

1) any census for Indigenous people for Wahkiakum
2) any census for White people only for Wahkiakum
3) any census that combines Indigenous, slaves and Whites

I believe these are the documents I'm looking for, but may be missing some.

1857 Territorial census
1860 Federal census
1870 Federal census
1871 Territorial census
1880 Indian census
1885 Territorial census
1887 Territorial census
1892 County auditor census
1910 Federal census

Thanks for any guidance you can provide on how to access these documents. :)
