London and Middlesex / Inquest into death of William Stokes 3rd Feb 1880
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
This rellie of mine died quite tragically on the railway line at Hendon on 1st February 1880.  His death certificate records that there was an inquest on the 3rd.  Anybody know where the coroner's report might be held, if it survives?

I can't decipher what's written about Edmund in the Merchant Seamen Lists on Find my Past, series BT116, piece number 88, 1853-1857.  I can only make out the word Sydney.

I was going to attach a snippet, but it won't come up for some reason. ::)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / Was Edmund Stokes in the navy in 1833?
« on: Saturday 23 April 16 18:52 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for Edmund Stokes, born 1812 in Buckingham, for ages.  Can't seem to find him in the censuses or marriages in England.  Suddenly found an entry for him on Ancestry in the New York passenger lists, on board the ship George Clinton, sailing from Liverpool in 1833.  However, Findmypast has him in the Royal Navy, on the same ship.  I'm confused.   What's going on here? ???

London and Middlesex / Jasper Stokes - Burial 1741 St James Piccadilly
« on: Thursday 25 February 16 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
I've just noticed on the IGI, in the Westminster PRs, one Jasper Stokes being buried in 1741 in St James, Piccadilly.  I'd like to know if the burial record mentions anything else about him.  Just want to check if he's one of mine... :D

Many thanks for your help.

The Common Room / Freeman of the city of London?
« on: Tuesday 23 February 16 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
I need you all to cast your eye over this document and tell me what you think.  Is it about getting an apprenticeship or something else?  I must admit, I don't really understand what this is about... ???

I don't need help with deciphering the handwriting, as it's fairly easily readable, just grasping why William Stokes would be made Freeman of the city.

Many thanks.

Warwickshire / Thomas Stokes the nephew - shoemaker
« on: Tuesday 17 February 15 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across a will for George Clarke who died in November 1862 in Railway Terrace, Vauxhall Rd, Birmingham.  He left everything to his nephew Thomas Stokes, shoemaker, living at 12 Vauxhall Road.  Not knowing much about this nephew, I thought I would look him up on the 1861 census and hopefully find him at the same address.  But I spent a whole hour in the library yesterday trying to find him on ancestry and though I found a plethora of other Thomas Stokes's living in the same area, I couldn't find one that was a shoemaker living at 12 Vauxhall Rd.  Not that I'm the most talented of searchers   :D

Is there anyone out there who has sharper skills than mine?

(Of course, he could have moved to 12 Vauxhall Road in 1862, which would just my luck.  Or perhaps changed jobs!)

Armed Forces / Thomas Holt, born Blackburn 1793 - 82nd Foot, 2nd Battalion
« on: Monday 06 October 14 20:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm interested in this chap as I think he is my ggggrandfather on my mother's side.  The entry on Ancestry describes him as a weaver by trade, 5 ft 6in, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair and brown eyes.  Just my kind of guy!  ;D

Any information about what he was up to in this regiment and where they went would be gratefully received.  He seems to join up on 4th May 1811 aged 18.  The title of the series is Canada British Regimental Registers of service 1756 - 1900.

Many thanks in advance.

I've recently upgraded from xp to Windows 7 and now neither my speakers or my memory card reader work.  Is this to do with the upgrade?  Or is there something else going on?

Many thanks in advance.

The Lighter Side / Unusual surnames
« on: Saturday 03 May 14 18:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm sure peeps have posted about this before, but I can't resist.

I've just discovered the surname Sweetapple in my family tree.  How unusual is that?  Mr and Mrs Sweetapple!  Ahh...

 :D :D
