Inverness / Jean Tipping Glenfinnan Inverness
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello the list

I am chasing information on Jean or Mary Jane Tipping who was born about 1902. My only clue is that she recorded herself in 1924 as a general servant of Glen House, Glenfinnan in Inverness. I have not been able to find a suitable record in Scotland's People, Ancestry, Findmypast or FamilySearch. However I did find a WWI medal card for a Thomas Tipping whose address was also at Glen House.

I notice there are quite a few Tipping records in Glasgow but all the information I can find about Glen House points me to the hotel (which may be correct) or to Bonnie Prince Charlie or the viaduct which is not a help.

Jean Tipping had an illegitimate child in the workhouse in West Derby, Lancashire, England in 1924. The story is that this child was put into the orphanage in Inverness. Somehow it appears this lady is related to me but I have no idea how.

I would appreciate any help.

Cheers

Cheshire / Ridgway family from Hollingworth and Mottram 1300s to 1900s
« on: Tuesday 21 September 21 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for people associated with the family of Ignatius Ridgway and Hannah How who married in 1767 in Mottram in Longdendale.

Ignatius was the son of James Ridgway and Mary Leech and was brother to James Ridgway the radical publisher of Piccadilly.

James Ridgway appears to have been born in 1724 since his will shows he died in 1814 and he was 90 years old. The family seems to have been securely bound to Hollingworth/Stalybride/Dukinfield for many hundreds of years.

James' parents appear to have been John Ridgway and Elizabeth Kelsall, so John must have been born before 1703 but it does not look as though the digial records go back that far.

If anyone can do a look up for John Ridgway of Hollingworth or Mottram for 1680-1703 that would be great.

Thanks.

Other Countries / INDIA: Bengal - death record for Catherine Garlik 1868
« on: Thursday 22 September 16 01:12 BST (UK)  »
I have George Garlick in my main tree branch. He served in Bengal in the 36th Regt of Foot. He was married to Catherine Smith in Ballysax on 5 Aug 1861 and they then travelled to India.

They had two children: Mary Zipporah b 10 Apr 1864 and Christopher George b 24 Mar 1866. George became terminally ill and was discharged in 1874 travelling home to Stockport, Cheshire to die.

Don't know what happened to Catherine. Another researcher has found a death record for Catherine Garlik in Bengal 1848-1868. My information conflicts somewhat with this.

I would really appreciate knowing the contents of this record for Catherine as I am in the middle of writing up this history.

Cheers from Canberra

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Wilmslow Parish - JONES & ARDERN
« on: Thursday 22 September 16 00:53 BST (UK)  »
Some time ago I happened across a marriage for William Jones and Mary Ardern in Wilmslow on 8 April 1831. I have no idea where/who I got this marriage from. I would appreciate any help anyone is able to give with a reference for this marriage.

This couple were Non-conformist to the back teeth. Their first child: RUTH JONES was baptised in the Wilmslow Methodist Chapel and they were living in Morley.

William was baptised in Wilmslow but his family were living in Hough whereas the Arderns were at Deans Row.

The reason I need to check is that I found another marriage for William Jones and Mary Ardern in Manchester Cathederal on 13 Feb 1848 with all the correct details of father's name etc. This marriage took place after all their children were born.

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger with two mature people who lived in Brinnington travelling up to Manchester Cathedral to marry without anyone knowing, when they may have already been married.

The only solution I can come up with is that when William died in 1863, Mary became an annuitant. If the 1831 marriage record was theirs and had been destroyed or the church had been destroyed and they couldn't get a paper copy, if there was an insurance policy they may have needed proof of marriage for Mary to be beneficiary, so they hopped off to Manchester.

Interested in any comments, but would really like a check on the 1831 record.

I am looking for any information on the burial of George Geary, died 1935 in Wilstead, or his mother, Pamela Geary d 1887 Wilstead.

I am trying to organise the interment of a Geary relative's ashes in Wilstead, but I am having to do it from Australia. It is very frustrating.

Thanks

Bedfordshire / Burial for George Geary d 1935 Wilstead BEDS
« on: Thursday 09 February 12 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate some help.

A friend of mine died and asked that I have her ashes transported from Australia to UK to be buried with some of her GEARY family in Wilstead, Bedfordshire. She expressed a wish to be buried in the plot housing her great grandmother, PAMELA GEARY, but the Vicar there tells me he cannot find that grave.

Her grandfather was GEORGE GEARY (1861-1935) and I believe he is buried at Wilstead. Can anyone give me a grave reference, burial reference .... something??

Thanks

Europe / Wilhelmine Charlotte Fredericke Schmarbeck, Pritzwalk, Prussia
« on: Thursday 19 May 11 13:47 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for my great grandmother for some time. Her name was Wilhelmine Emilie Maria Schmarbeck and she was born on Boxing Day, 1862 in Pritzwalk, Mecklenberg, Prussia.

This week, I had a lucky break and found her baptism entry in the Mecklenberg parish records for Pritzwalk. I do not read German, but the most important facts were clearly legible and the record I found was definitely her.

It appears she was illegitimate, so her mother is clearly entered, but the column for her father's information is completely blank. Her mother's name was Wilhelmine Charlotte Fredericke Schmarbeck. From the ages of Minna's godparents, I would estimate her mother was born about 1840. I could not read the place where they were living at the time of the baptism, despite my best efforts with various websites about German handwriting and my rather truncated German-English dictionary.

I also found and entry for Minna's sister Bertha who was born on 14 December 1864 also in Pritzwalk. As with Minna, the mother's column was filled in but the father's column was blank. There was at least one other sister about whom I could find nothing. Even though these children were illegitimate, the mother Wilhelmine Charlote Fredericke obviously had some on-going relationship over a period of time. There is a Wilhelmine Schmarbeck of about the right age listed in the 1900 Census for Mecklenberg but she is listed as a widow and is alone.

I cannot find a Wilhelmine or Minna or Bertha Schmarbeck of the right age in the 1867 Census records for Mecklenberg.

I have tried following up on the locations of the godparents in 1867 and looking at various other parish records in the area to see if I can find a birth/baptism for Wilhelmine Charlotte Fredericke Schmarbeck, but that is a bit "needle in the haystack"-ish since I have no idea about which parish to look in nor the date.

I would really appreciate some assistance with what I should do next.

Kildare / Martin Smith family at Ballysax in 1861
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 00:23 BST (UK)  »
I am currently trying to track a family which includes:

Catherine Smith, who married a soldier from the 36th Regiment of Foot from Curragh Camp, Christopher George Garlick,  on 5 August 1861. Their marriage record indicates Catherine's father as Martin Smith. Catherine and George embarked with the regiment for India in August 1863. George served in West Bengal and Catherine produced two living children: Mary Zipporah and Christopher George Jr. George Snr was medically discharged from the regiment in 1874 and the family returned to England where both parents died. Zipporah went to live with an aunt and eventually married and settled in England. George Jr went to boarding school and then emigrated to Canada.

Catherine appears to have had a sister, Bridget Smith, born February 1842 in Co Limerick or Co Kildare. She married a private in the Commissariat, John William Bowen, on 24 December 1862 in Ballysax, Co Kildare. Bridget cites her father as Martin Smith and his occuaption as "servant". John and Bridget moved to Warrington in Manchester where John eventually became Chief Inspector of Police.

I think Martin's wife may have been Ann Duggan but the only marriage record I can find gives their marriage date too late for them to be the parents of Catherine.

It looks as though Martin may have been a servant working for someone who was in the military. It does not appear that he was a soldier himself. It is also likely he may have been Church of Ireland and not Catholic.

I have looked everywhere I can think of. Has anyone got any suggestions about where to go from here?

Cheers
