Australia / Birth Registration in NSW
« on: Thursday 28 September 23 14:00 BST (UK)  »
I thought it odd to see a NSW Birth Certificate stating a birth on 23rd Feb. 1930 but the registration date on the certificate is 16 Mar. 1931. Would there be a reason for this, or is it just a mistake.

Andrew Lamond (of Crathie, Aberdeenshire) of the Royal Sappers & Miners appears in the Record WO23, Royal Hospital Chelsea, Admission Books, Registers and Papers 1702-1876. He was invalided out of Army in 1813 when he lost a leg aged 30. I have not found his death. Because the transcript (not the original) has a 1834 date on it, I wondered if anyone might indicate what the contents of the following stands for. It looks like Dd. QPY289. Would 1834 be a death date or perhaps just a change in pension.

Is it possible to see a record of an attempted murder trial in 1905 at Maidstone Assizes. And where might such records be held.

I know of a birth at Birchfield in January 1905. Would there be a way of finding out how this building functioned and the possible circumstances of a birth there, and indeed do any records still exist.

Warwickshire / Henry Stafford and Mary Ann Pearson

Trying to find more information of daughter Clara who I think was born and baptised in 1873 (St John the Baptist, Coventry) to Henry Stafford and Mary Ann Pearson. She appears in 1891 Census described as Stepdaughter to Robert Henry Joines, head, 47, watch jeweller, at Sherborne Street, Coventry. In 1911 Census she is an Inmate at Church Stretton, Shropshire with Charles Smith, 41, mar, born Robertsbridge, Sussex, dau. Marie Smith, 3, and son Charles Arthur Smith, 1, born Sittingbourne. This Census states she was married 20 years, had 11 children, 7 living. I have found only 5 and trying to help a daughter of child Ada born 1905. Few facts appear to have been passed on. A son emigrated to Canada in 1924, aged 15, under auspices of Catholic Emigration Society

My 4xgtgf Charles Brechin probably born in Methlick was baptised 12 Jan 1772 in Ellon, Aberdeenshire. NA WO69/1/584 – Folio 33 – has Charles Brichin of RA Soldiers Unit, 1 Battalion enlisting 1795 aged 22. (Note said he was transferred 1804.) Another NA record has him as Chas Breechen, a Mason. He was transferred to H Brigade 1 June 1799. I found in Ireland Diocesan & Prerogative Wills and Administration Indexes 1595-1858. "1808 - Charles Brichen, Sgt. Royal Artillery, Island Bridge, Co. Dublin.”

Received another military document stating "(46) C Troop - gunners - Brichin Charles Gr - age 22 - height 5ft 7-1/2" - inlisted 20 Mar (17)95 (no mention of where). Born Scotland (Nation), Aberdeen (County), Milnback? (city/town), Breen (parish), Mason (trade). Can read and write, fair complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes. Mustered - 1st Battalion, Troop F. 1 June (17)99. Transferred to Corps G (?Div ..can't read) 1 October 1804.”

Note : I think that Milnback is mis-transcription of Methlick; and Breen should be Brainjohn.

Charles Brichan of South Weald, Essex married there on 2 June 1796. The banns had him listed as Charles Brechan. Son George was baptised Brentwood, Essex on 20 May 1798. When this son married (2nd) in Aberdeen in 1872 he described his father as Quartermaster Sergeant, Royal Horse Artillery, dec.

In 1851 Census in Aberdeen, Scotland a second son Henry was listed as born in Ireland (British Subject) cal 1808. In 1871 it states he was born Dublin. On Henry’s death certificate (1881) his father was noted as Charles Brechin, Sergeant Royal Artillery, dec.  Henry’s gravestone included the death of his mother Ann Abbly in 1827, the numerous children who pre-deceased him, and others who died after him. No mention of his father’s death was included. I would add that I found a note of the burial of Ann Abel in Aberdeen in 1827, reported as wife of Lieut Charles Brechens.

The various versions of surnames hasn’t made this search easy, nor the differing descriptions of Charles’ rank. Am I correct in thinking that he probably died in Ireland around 1808 a Sergeant. I wonder why this would not be recorded along with other family monumental inscriptions. And is there any way I can find where and when he served. I'm a wee bit out of my depth.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Richard Cox bo 1807 Southampton
« on: Tuesday 03 September 13 13:49 BST (UK)  »
This ancestor Richard Cox's birth data was found in his seaman's documents. He married in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1832 and died there in 1860. I have found no confirmation of his birth. His death certificate (in 1860) states that his father was also Richard Cox, gardener, and his mother Isabella Cox ms Green - both deceased. Does anyone share this family?

My ancester Charles Brechin (could be Brechen, Brichen, Brichan etc) was described in son Henry's Mar. cert., as Sergeant Royal Artillery; Mason (Master). In the (2nd) Mar. cert. of another son George he is described as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the Royal Horse Artillery. Though no record found to date, Charles was noted as married to Ann Able (Ably). I calculate he might have been born 1760-1780, but  have no proof of a birth or a death.

Son George was born calc. 1799 in England; son Henry calc. 1808 in Ireland - again I've no records - which might well tie-in with a military family. Both of them married and died in Aberdeen, Scotland which makes me wonder if the parents also came from this area.

I attempted a fairly quick visit to National Archives a couple of years ago but found nothing on Charles Brichen's military career.  I'm looking for help.
