Hi all,

I am researching the family of David Hamilton Weir, son of David Weir (b. 1778, Old Cumnock, Ayr)  and Margaret Hamilton (b. 1778, New Cumnock, Ayr). My interest is centered around James Weir and Jean Mitchell (parents of David Weir snr), which is where the research get's a bit hazy and uncertain. I have researched as far as John Weir and Agnes Hunter (parents of James), and William Weir and Jean Good (parents of John), however, feel some doubts as to whether the information gathered is correct.

Many people on Ancestry.com have noted that the brother of John, Hugh (son of William Weir and Jean Good), traveled to America where he owned a plantation. Once again I have no idea if this information is correct. Others have noted a connection to the powerful De Vere family.

I would love to know what I can follow for certain and what information has minimal backing. Also, if you have an extensive knowledge of the descendents of the De Vere family I would love to know if you think a connection is plausible. Please help!!

Kind Regards,

Hi there,

I have a bit of a conundrum concerning the Brooks, Jay and Andrews families.

I have acquired christening records for the children of James Brightwen Brooks and Mary Andrews, including a Mary Brooks who is my direct link. All children were born in Shipdham/Thetford, Norfolk between 1821-1838. I have also found a marriage record for James and Mary in 1821 in Diss, Norfolk. Mary's parents are Jacob Andrews and Elizabeth.

I can only seem to find the family in 1841, with James absent, and Mary stating that they were all born in Ipswich, Suffolk. One of the elder children, Edgar, is noted as being in the Norfolk jail at age 17. After this time I can only find Mary (married to Henry Cock Osborn) and Josiah (the youngest child born in 1838). Josiah is living with a Sarah Jay (head of family; widower of Thomas Jay; b. 1791), Jacob Andrews (b. 1821), and Mary Townsend (b. 1828; all these people inc. Josiah are noted as relatives to Sarah) in 1851.

After 1851 the family seems to disappear. I cannot find them anywhere.

I have looked at some old newspapers from the Norfolk and Suffolk area, and I have found a notice in 1817 re. a Thomas Jay of Diss, Norfolk and a Jacob Andrews of Ipswich, Suffolk. Thomas Jay owned a mill in Diss, Norfolk I believe.

I have no idea how these families are connected, but I know they are somehow.

Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Carla Grillo
