Family History Beginners Board / * Smith jumped ship
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 09:46 BST (UK)  »
I Live in England & have a * Smith born * 1920 in *, Lancashire to Edward Smith & Mary Smith (nee Phelan). Both parents are Irish. I haven't managed to find their marriage record in Ireland or England, so I'd be grateful if anyone can help regarding *'s parents' origins.

I understand that * jumped ship (I don't know whether merchant or RN) in Auckland, New Zealand, probably the late 1940s or early 1950s & none of the family has heard from him since. I appreciate how vague this information is but, I'd really appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on *'s whereabouts & what happened to him or provide me with advice on how to go about finding him.

Thanks very much in anticipation, Brita

Other Countries / Robert Lindsay died Singapore abt. 1847
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Robert was born 20 May 1816 in Largo, Fife, Scotland. His parents were David Lindsay & Euphemia Hay.
I found a grave stone in Largo cemetery that said Robert Lindsay Robert died in Singapore age 32. What was he doing in Singapore? Can anyone help or can anyone let me know how I find out?
I've looked in all the records I can think of on line & I don't know where to try next.
I have the following information, but unfortunately didn't record where I got it from. However, this doesn't explain how Robert got to Singapore or how & in what circumstances he died.
There was a lot of cholera & endemic smallpox in Singapore before 1847 because people were suspicious of the vaccine. Seamen who were infected were put in the hospital with sick Chinese & Convicts where the disease spread. By 1847-1848 the number of smallpox cases had reduced considerably & a Seaman's hospital had been built in which there were 12 patients. It was believed that they caught the disease before they arrived at Singapore.
Any help will be gratefully received. :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Sheffield Parish Church - Storey
« on: Friday 15 July 11 17:44 BST (UK)  »
I'd be very grateful if someone could check out the following information as I don't live near Sheffield.
I have a marriage certificate GRO vol 9c page 327 Oct-DEC 1855 Sheffield that states that George Storey's father is also called George Storey (a cordwainer). I have come across errors in certificates before now & as I cannot find a birth/baptism record for a George Storey born to a George Storey in Harthill (George Jr's birth place in every census record from 1851-1891) I wondered whether an error had occurred in this instance.
Thanks very much in anticipation. Brita
