Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / Scanning slides - what size/dpi should I use?
« on: Wednesday 28 December 22 00:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have borrowed a slide scanner which does batches of slides and I wonder what sort of dpi size I should go for to get a reasonable image? The manual that comes with it is more than slightly confusing to me :( . Most are holiday photos taken in the 60's and I was planning on scanning to jpg initially and then if I come across one I really want to keep scanning that one as a Tif version.
Can anyone give me any tips please?
Many thanks
Jackie

The Common Room / Free 1921 Census at your local library?
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
From 1st November Oxfordshire Libraries have free access to the 1921 Census at their libraries through their FindMyPast subscription. You do need to go to the library to access this. It may be worth other counties checking to see if their libraries are also offering the same. ;D

Not sure if this is the best board to put this on but perhaps the Mods can move it if its more appropriate elsewhere and apologies if people are already aware ;)

Oxfordshire / Free 1921 Census at your local library
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to post this but as of 1st November Oxfordshire libraries have free access to the 1921 Census via FindMyPast at their libraries ;D ;D. Whilst you don't need to be a member to use one of their computers please be aware that some libraries only have limited "guest" computers available so if you want to use one it may well be worth giving your local library a ring to check what the arrangements are especially if you want to use a computer for an extended period of time to do your research. You can always sign up as a member either at the library or through Oxfordshire Libraries website

Oxfordshire / Free access to Ancestry from home for library card members
« on: Thursday 04 June 20 17:11 BST (UK)  »
There is currently free access to Ancestry for Oxfordshire library card members from home. If you are not an Oxfordshire member then you can still apply for a library card to access the same and they will send you details of your library card and pin number which yiou can then use to access the site. This will only be temporary whilst the libraries are closed so make the most of it ;D

Ireland / Complete Beginner in Irish research needs pointing in the right direction
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 00:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Now this is a real newby question - sorry!. I am familiar with FH research in England and Wales and also to some extent Scotland but have just been asked to help someone with a family tree which has Irish Ancestors. I have looked through the stickies and am just getting more and more confused ???

Now I appreciate that the records are not as complete as England and Wales but what is really confusing me is which websites I would need to use for

a) looking at the 1901 and 1911 Censuses - are the websites different for Northern Ireland and the Republic?
b) BMD certificates similarly are there different websites to use dependent on which part of Ireland you are looking?
c) Parish records. I see some seem to be on FindMyPast but is there anywhere else to search?
d) Griffiths valuations.
and anything else you think might be helpful.

Once I can get a handle on where I need to look I might be able to make a start but until then...... ::)

Thankyou for your patience

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dad and "his Mosquito" June 1944
« on: Wednesday 06 December 17 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
I wonder if some kind person would have a go at giving this photo a bit of a sharpen and some colour please? It is of my Dad on the left and his navigator Charlie Mapes standing in front of "their" Mosquito " U" for "Uncle" at RAF Oakington in June 1944.
I am hoping to give my great nephew an Airfix kit of a Mosquito for his Christmas present and thought it would be nice to add a copy of the photo for him to see the plane his Great Grandfather flew.
Unfortunately the photo is very small, only 2" or so but I have scanned it at 600dpi so maybe someone can do something with it :-\
Thank you in advance to anyone who has a go
Jackie :)

Hi all, I am hoping that you might be able to tidy up my Great Uncle Ivan Howlett who was one of the many men who died at the Battle of Jutland 100 years ago next week. He was an Acting Leading Stoker on board the Queen Mary when she was sunk on 31st May 1916. It is the only photo the family have of him and I suspect it was taken when or near the time he originally signed on with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves in 1909 when he was 19.

Many thanks to anyone who is kind enough to have a go

World War Two / Bomber Command Clasp - Has anyone received one yet for a relative?
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am just wondering if anyone who has applied for a Bomber Command Clasp or Arctic Star has had a reply from department dealing with these or indeed the clasp itself?

I sent off for one on the first day the applications opened nearly 2 years ago now for my deceased father. Now I appreciate that they were dealing, quite rightly, with applications from living individuals first but has anyone heard anything from them? I looked on the website a month or so back and saw they had changed the form from what they originally had so I emailed them with the additional information which they now require on the form, but again have not had confirmation.

So I wonder if anyone has any update please?
Jackie :D
