Cardiganshire / Llanbadarn Fawr Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Friday 16 April 21 23:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

There used to be a very useful website put together by Penglais School which provided a full survey of monumental inscriptions from St Padarn's church, Llanbadarn Fawr near Aberystwyth.  This seems to be no longer online.

Does anyone know whether these are still available online in another location.

I am looking to find monumental inscriptions for Thomas Jones (d. 1824, b. 1766) and his family.  I think he may have been a merchant and shipowner of Aberystwyth.  I also think he may have been buried at Llanbadarn Fawr church.

Details I have for him and others of his family who may also have been buried at Llanbadanr Fawr are:

Thomas Jones
Wife - Jane
Sons -  Thomas, John, Evan, William.
Daughters -
Winifred (Gwen) b. 1792 m. Lewis Jones 5/1/1819 Llanbadarn Fawr
Jane b. abt 1789  m. John Humphreys
Margaret b. 1790  m. William Julian, she was buried Llanbadarn Fawr 1864
Anne m. William Evans

Does anyone have access to a copy of the Llanbadarn Fawr monumental inscriptions, or can you suggest where I could find them online.

Many thanks,
KESTON.

The Common Room / Shipping information
« on: Friday 24 April 20 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found a Merchant Seaman record which may be for a forebear of mine.  t is for James Rugg, b. 1831 Somersetshire on Findmypast.  He is listed as being on what looks like the ship Canning, which left London on 10 / 14 or 19 March 1855.

I have found this ship in the Lloyds Lists for 1855.  It says it was built by Somes Bros. at a place called "Molmn" in 1854 and was destined for a London India voyage.

I have the British Newspaper archive but can't find details of any departures of this ship.  This may be because I am not searching properly though.

I have also searched around for details on Somes Bros. but although I can see them referred to I can't see any details of them, even when I look on ships List websites.

I have searched to see if there crew's lists on National Archives, but it doesn't look as if they exist for this ship, which I know is not unusual.

Could anyone please suggest where I might look to find details on the Canning and also Somes Bros.

Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.

Europe / Birth reference search Pomerania Poland
« on: Thursday 20 February 20 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am wondering if Someone can help me with this one please.

I am searching for a birth reference for Friederiche Wilhelm Wellm.  Born 1870, Bodenwinkel, East Prussia.

After a search I have found this is now in Poland near Gdańsk and that the Polish name of the town or village is Katy Rybackie.

I have found the Genetela and other sites for searching for Polish records but have not had any luck in finding him.

Indications I have are that his parents may have been Friederiche Wilhelm Wellingtonians and Wilhelmine Justine Gabriel with a number of further generations going back.

It would be good if possible to Comfirm this by finding some records.

Many thanks for all your help,
Keston.

World War Two / Service numbers of WWII personnel
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I would like to source records for a relative who we served a nurse in the Second World War.

I understand that records for this period are held at the MOD.  On this site though they say that you need a service number to request records.

Can anyone help with where this could be found or how records can be sourced if you don’t have a service number.

Many thanks,
Keston.

Australia / Tasmania Gold mining records
« on: Monday 26 November 18 07:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have two questions.

I have a forebear who was likely to have been a miner in Tasmania during the late 1850’s and early 1860’s.

I have done a bit searching around and can’t find any records of miners at the time.  Do any mining
Licences databases or
Other sources of information
Survive?  My assumption given he likely left in 1961 and headed for the Otago goldfields is that he was somewhere in the north east.

Secondly, he later returned with his family to Zeehan where he died in
1895.  He is buried in the cemetery in Zeehan I understand.  I have a death record for him but have been unable to track down a burial record or probate or even coroner’s
Report if these existed at that time.  Could anyone who can help please let me know where I
Could find these.

Many thanks for all your help,
Keston.

South Africa / Harold Smith, died 1919, Durban
« on: Thursday 04 October 18 04:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Thanks to those who have included informative posts on this board about researching in South Africa.  I have done quite a bit of research in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on various branches of my family, but am now looking at a line which lived for a while in South Africa, so for a researcher without local background they have been greatly appreciated!

My search is for any information I can find on Harold Smith (b. abt. 1879, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, d. 4 Mar 1919, Durban).

Harold was a bricklayer and family information is that he and some or all of his brothers Leonard (b. 1880), Sydney (b. 1884), and Fred (b. 1893), who were all bricklayers spent time working in Natal.  Family information is that through the firm Smith & Booth, they were responsible for building many of the houses in Pietermaritzburg.  Whilst the other brothers returned to the UK, Harold died on his way back to the UK in 1919.

The family story is that he died on the boat of diphtheria and was returned to Durban, where he is buried.  He left a family, including three small children in England.

Thanks to suggestions on this board, I have now found a Death record and will for Harold on the Family Search website.  This provides the interesting information that he actually died in Room 13, Belgrave Hotel, Durban, and that he committed suicide.  Although we know he was working in Pietermaritzburg in 1915, at the time of his death he was or had been working at the Reynold Bros Sugar Mill, Sezela on the south Natal coast.

For me this clearly raises all sorts of interesting questions.  The first of which is whether there would be any newspaper record of his death.  I have found good write-ups in Australian papers for example of similar events for other family members.

Also, where was Belgrave Hotel and is it still there, and which Durban cemetery is he buried in.

I would also be keen to track down any information at all that may exist on Smith & Booth in Pietermaritzburg.

I have done a lot of searching on the web, and have found the transcriptions that have been done of some Durban cemeteries and have not found him included.  I have also seen the EGGSA website which seems to include transcriptions of some local papers.

I am keen to understand whether there are any other sources of newspaper or burial records and whether anyone can shed any light on the other small bits of information coming from the family or the death record.

Any suggestions on this would be most gratefully accepted!

Many thanks,
KESTON.

Anglesey / Overton Anglesey
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 23:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found records of a Martha Ailes Overton, bapt. 2 Jun 1814 on the in a Wesleyan Chapel on the Beaumaris Circuit.  Her parents are John Joseph Overton and Elinor.  John Joseph is listed as a sailor.

This Martha was I think the same Martha Overton who married Rowland Jones in 1834 in Bangor and this links in with family knowledge we have in a  number of ways.

There is also a record of a Martha Alice, 5 months old buried on 15 December 1813, but with no further details of parents.  These dates look too close for the girls to be sisters, but the similarity of the names I interesting.  Is there any way that there could be errors with these dates or some other explanation?

However, apart from these records, there don't seem to be any more for Overtons in Anglesey.

There is a marriage record for John Joseph Overton and Ellen Roberts on 3 September 1811.  This comes up on Findmypast within the "Faculty Office Marriage Licences" record set.  I am keen to understand how I could find out where this marriage may have occurred.  I can't find any other records from John Joseph in searches.  A later Census record I am pretty sure is for Elinor / Ellin notes that she was not born within Anglesey.

Can anyone help with any information on this record set and / or suggestions of next steps?

Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.
