Renfrewshire / New Road, Elderslie - Renamed?
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Me again!  :)

In 1947, my Grandmother gave her address as 5 New Road off Park Avenue, Elderslie, Renfrewshire. I have found Park Avenue on a modern street-map but can't see New Road so I wonder if it's been renamed?

Renfrewshire / Boyd Street, Greenock - renamed? SOLVED
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 12:02 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandparents lived at 7 Boyd Street, Greenock but I have been unable to find it on a modern street-map. Does anyone know if the street was renamed?

I'm hoping to visit Greenock in a couple of weeks and would like to visit this street if possible.

Many thanks!  :)

Renfrewshire / Schools in Johnstone
« on: Friday 15 February 13 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
I'm continuing my two year search for information about my McKenzie family. After encountering a few red herrings along the way, I now believe my Father, John (aka Ian) McLeod McKenzie may have attended school in Johnstone. He was born in June 1921.

Does anyone have a list of primary/junior schools that would have existed during the 1920's and 1930's in the Johnstone area? I'd like to find out if there might be any surviving records of the pupils which might help me to find out where he was educated.

Any suggestions as to sources of info will be very gratefully received.

Renfrewshire / Greenock Blitz - Injuries
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if a list exists of those injured during the Greenock Blitz, rather than a list of fatalities?

I know my Grandfather suffered a serious facial injury and he may have been a civilian rather than in active service (as he would have been approx 49 years old at the time).

I'm clutching at straws here but as he was born in Greenock, I'm wondering if he was there during the blitz.

Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Building History Request - 1940's
« on: Friday 27 January 12 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have found two London addresses for my Grandfather, Alexander McKenzie, that appear on the 1940's electoral registers.

1) I would like to find out if possible, who owned 36 Belgrave Square, City of Westminster, London in 1947 so I can find out who his employer was. Just to know if it was a private house or an embassy etc would be a start.

2) The 1945 Electoral Register shows his address as 1 Kemble Street, City of Westminster, London but there are hundreds of names at the same address. I am curious to know what type of building it was to have so many people registered there. There is now a tall modern building at this site so I'd like to know what stood there in the 1940's.

Have tried quite a few internet searches as I live outside mainland UK but have been unable to find any info.

Also tried a land registry website but they said they couldn't search that far back.

Would appreciate any info about these addresses or suggestions as to how I can track their history.

Many thanks

Renfrewshire / John McKenzie - Mitchell Library Lookup Request
« on: Monday 23 January 12 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have emailed the Mitchell Library twice to request some info but have received no reply so they are probably too busy to carry out research.

I wondered if any kind-hearted RootsChat member might be prepared to carry out a little detective work on my behalf as I live in the Channel Islands so it's difficult to visit!

I would like to try to find out where my Father went to school and I believe the Mitchell Library may hold this type of info.

My main problem is that I can't be sure if he was brought up by his birth parents or by relatives but here are all of his details:

Full Birth Name: John McLeod McKenzie (sometimes known as Ian)
Date of Birth: 25th June 1921
Father: Alexander McKenzie
Mother: Ruth Emily McKenzie (m.s. Reside)
Place of Birth: Paisley, Renfrewshire. Father's Domicile is 40 Well Street, Paisley but he was a house servant so I don't know if the whole family would have lived there.
If my father was later left in the care of other relatives, other family addresses would be: Watt Street, Greenock or Boyd Street, Greenock or Crow Road, Broomhill, Glasgow.

I don't know exactly what details are required but hopefully his name, date of birth and parents' names are a good start!

Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Burial Search for Alexander McKenzie, died 1947
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
After 10 months of searching I have at last been able to find my Scottish Grandfather, Alexander McKenzie's death certificate. The reason it took so long was that I didn't know where he'd moved to but have now discovered he worked/died in London.

I would very much like to find out where he is buried so I can visit his grave. I understand there were no church cemetary burials in London after about 1856 due to over-crowding so I assume he was buried in a non-church cemetary.

His death certificate details are as follows:

Alexander McKenzie, Died 26th November 1947, Age 54 (born 09/07/1892)
Died in St George's Hospital
He seems to have lived at 36 Belgrave Square, Westminster where he was employed as a houseman.

I would very much appreciate it if anyone can either let me have details of his burial or point me in the direction of a website or a professional researcher who might be able to help. I live in the Channel Islands and don't visit London very often so I'm trying to research this online.

Many thanks!

Just wondered if there might be anyone living in Guernsey who remembers any stories about my Grandmother Ruth Emily McKenzie who arrived in Guernsey in 1933 and was there until the end of World War II?

Ruth worked as a housemaid at Havilland Hall and her Aunt Louisa Powell was housekeeper.

Her son John McLeod McKenzie, also known to some as Ian, may have worked at Havilland Hall as a butler although he served with the RAF during the war so I think he arrived in the late 1940's or some time after that.

I have a copy of Ruth's WWII Identification card but know very little about her.

My Grandmother died in Scotland in 1951 and my Father's address was recorded on her death certificate as 2 Westcroft, St Andrews, Guernsey.

The Priaulx Library has been unable to find any information about her or my other close relatives which is very disappointing.

Ruth appears to have lived and worked alone in Guernsey even though my Father would only have been 12 years old when she arrived so it appears he was living with relatives in Scotland. My Grandfather Alexander may or may not have been with her when she arrived but there is no WWII ID card for him at the local archives.

Any information that anyone remembers, no matter how trivial, would be very much appreciated as it would help me piece together my family history.

Many thanks

Renfrewshire / Andrew & Margaret Russell - Greenock/Glasgow
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if my great aunt had children but the ScotlandsPeople website images are hidden due to the potential birth dates so it makes it rather difficult without ordering random certificates which is an expensive exercise!

My great aunt and her (first) husband's details are as follows:

Margaret Lang McKenzie  18/06/1897 to 26/02/1963
Andrew Redpath Russell   18/11/1898 to 07/03/1943

Both were born in Greenock. They were married on 23/12/1924 at 7 Watt Street which was the home of Margaret's parents, John McLeod McKenzie & Sarah McKenzie.

When Andrew died, they were living at 284 Crow Road, Glasgow.

Margaret married a second time but was probably past child-bearing age so I have not included her second husband's details.

Ideally I would like to find living descendants if possible but any info will be much appreciated.  :)
