James ROERTS claimed he was a native of Ross-on-Wye c1801-8 with parents James and Mary but I could not find a baptism in the Parish Registers that matched these criteria.

Any help would be appreciated.

Laois (Queens) / WESTMAN, Richard
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 06:31 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Richard WESTMAN was born in late 1808 in Laois (Queens) and I have found his baptism in the Church of Ireland Parish of Rosenallis on 1 Jan 1809. He later married Ellen Furlong but I have been unable to locate this marriage. However I have located the baptism of their first child, Saunders, in the Church of Ireland Parish of Clonaslee on 30 Sep 1838. The family then emigrated to Australia in 1840.

Any assistance in locating this marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Also any assistance with locating the baptism of Ellen Furlong (c1813) would be appreciated. She was the daughter of John Furlong and Eleanor nee Parsons who were married in the Church of Ireland Parish of Geashill just across the border in Offaly on 12 Jul 1805. However Ellen's siblings were all baptised in Rosenallis or Clonaslee so we can assume the family had moved into Laois after their marriage.

Cork / GILLETT, Henry (Cobh)
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 05:57 BST (UK)  »
Henry Gillett was born in Queenstown/Cobh c1800 and emigrated to Australia in 1832.
I believe the records at St Colman's Cathedral only date from 1812 and I have not been able to find his baptism. Furthermore I have not been able to locate his marriage (to Mary Hales) but it was probably in the bride's parish which is unknown. I have however located the baptism of their daughter, Margaret, on 12 Oct 1831 at St Colman's.

Any assistance and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Australia / DOUGLAS(S)
« on: Sunday 26 February 12 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph & Mary Douglas(s) and their three children Joseph (8), Eliza (3) and Elizabeth (1) arrived in NSW from England in 1855. My wife is descended from Joseph (Jr) and I have a pretty good handle on that line but have not been able to find what happened to the parents and when/where they died. Also would be interested in any info on siblings Eliza and Elizabeth.

Laois (Queens) / WESTMAN / FURLONG
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 07:51 BST (UK)  »
Richard WESTMAN and his wife Ellen (nee FURLONG) and 2 yo son Saunders emigrated from Queen's County to Australia in 1840. My research leads me to believe that they came from the area immediately west of Mountmellick in the civil parishes of Rosenallis, Kilmanman and Rearymore. As they were Protestant, I believe it is necessary to focus on the C of I Parishs which cover this area. This seems to be mainly Rosenallis plus Clonaslee after 1814. The C of I Parish of Mountmellick did not start till 1840. Previous research at the National Archives found the baptism of son, Saunders, in the C of I Parish of Clonaslee in Sept 1838 and the baptisms of Ellen's siblings in 1815, 1817 and 1820. There was no success with the marriage of Richard and Ellen (c1837) or of their baptisms (c1809 and c1813 respectively).

I feel that my effort now needs to concentrate on Rosenallis but the previous researcher commented that many pages in the copy held at the National Archives were extremely faint and almost illegible, and I have been trying to confirm that the version held at the RCB Library would be the original, or at least a better copy. Information from the Library is inconclusive. I have also heard a suggestion that the original may be in the custody of the Rector of the Parish.

Can anyone offer any thoughts or suggestions. I am prepared to pay for another researcher if that is what it takes but there seems little point in going over the same copy at the National Archives.

Lancashire / Mary Ann Patchett, Manchester c1810
« on: Monday 26 September 11 08:59 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to find the baptism of Mary Ann Patchett, born c1810 Manchester, the dau of Jacob and Mary Patchett. In trying to narrow down the possible Parish I located on Family Search the marriage of her sister Maria Patchett to John Cobb on 12 Dec 1822, aged 19. This was in the Parish of St John, Manchester, which I presume is the church on Byrom St which closed in 1931. So we have Maria born c1803 and Mary Ann c1810. Of course the family may not have been in the same Parish over that 20 year period but that is the best clue I could find. Can anyone help with this or at least point to a way forward.
