I need some help with shipping - the departure from Tasmania - Launceston most likely - for the following people after 5 July 1863 (married in Launceston) and before 20 May 1865 (daughter born in Dunedin.) I can't find anything.

George Cannon, b.c.1811 Great Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England. I believe he was running a barge in or near Launceston early 1860s. He may have travelled separately.
Catherine Cannon, nee Jordan, b. 1837 White Hills Tasmania.
married 5 Jul 1863. Launceston Tasmania.
Maud Marie Cannon, b.c.1861-1863 Tasmania no birth record found. She was illegitimate, but is there a christening record?

They were in Dunedin by 1865 - birth of Gertrude Lillie Cannon 20 May 1865, Dunedin.
I believe Catherine Cannon had at least one brother (Jordans - James, Robert, Thomas or Richard) in Dunedin with them at some point.

There's a lot riding on this. My grandmother has a story of him being wounded in the Maori wars, and she knew his wife and his daughter (her own mother and grandmother) and has been correct on almost everything. I need the shipping to eliminate or confirm him in the militia. But it's complicated. You don't have to read all this:

Appreciate any help with the shipping or christening records.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Maori wars - military records?
« on: Tuesday 06 October 15 10:25 BST (UK)  »
George Cannon, b. circ 1810, moved to Dunedin from Tasmania sometime between 1863 and 1865. He was still in Dunedin in 1881.

My grandmother told me that he fought in the Maori wars - and that he nearly had his thumb cut off in the fighting. That's all I know.

Is there some way to look up his military records?

Canada Lookup Request / Eva May Little, born (June? July? 1897? 1898?) in Elmvale, Ontario
« on: Wednesday 27 February 13 00:42 GMT (UK)  »
I can't seem to find any online BD&M for Ontario that's free. I'm on a budget, so can't afford an ancestry membership.

Eva was my grandmother, and my grandfather's story is about to be published - I'd love to get the details of her birth record, as I have contradictory information.

Her parents are Mark W Little and Agnes (Ritchie).

Would dearly appreciate any assistance.

World War One / Royal Flying Corps - how to find records
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 03:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the records of John C. Mercer, who enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in Canada, as miscellaneous aviator cadet, third class air mechanic No. 74240 R.F.C.   He was in course No.11.

Where would i find the records? I've tried English and Canadian online archives but can't seem to find anything.

I know he flew missions in Europe and had three crashes -
  • One in Canada where in a forced landing he clipped an outhouse that wasn't visible because of the engine.  The outhouse was demolished, and a man came running out.
  • The second in England, transporting an important American, it flipped, landing upside down. Both survived.

Merionethshire / edmund prys (1541?-1624) - a definitive(ish) ancestry
« on: Thursday 01 December 11 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
I'm descended from this man, and... there seem to be contradictory genealogies around, reflecting aspiration, imagination and genealogy by cut and paste. This is where google is not bringing clarity, and I need some historical rigour.

Can anyone point me to a sound genealogy for Edmund Prys, the archdeacon?

(And i expect it comes with some caveats - that's ok, that's real history!)

Cornwall / Thomas PERRY puzzles in Gwennap
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 10:44 GMT (UK)  »
Too many Thomases - how do I verify?

1. Starting point - the Thomas Perry I know:
Thomas Perry b.cir 1794. Cornwall. (age based on census information.)
M.13 Oct 1822 in Gwennap to Catherine Jeffrey, grocer in StDay.
Dies before 1851 (wife a widow) - no death record in Cornwall found. (Children; Elisha, Daniel, Catherine, Elizabeth, Charles, Emily, Nanny).

2. The puzzle - a death record
Death record in Gwennap: Thomas Perrey, 7 nov 1843 aged 71, blacksmith.  Informant Thomas Perrey son.
Puzzle: is this Thomas and his father? Or someone else?

3. Next step - check Gwennap records:
Baptism 1794 Thomas, s of Thomas & Clarinda PERRY, 2nd Feb - so he's the right age to be my younger Thomas. So let's check out the parents:
Marriage 1793 PERRY Thomas, batchelor, Clarinda WHITFORD, spinster, 27th Aug 1792, He signed "Perrey", she mark, Thomas Bennatts & Wm. Northey, witness. This man used that same unusual spelling as in the death certificate.
Baptism 1814 PERRY Candace, 6th Nov 1814, No 372, d/o, Thomas & Clarinda Perry, of St Day, Miner. (right place, wrong occupation. But maybe mining paid better than smithing?)

4. When was this Thomas born? Earlier baptisms Gwennap
1773 Thomas, s of Stephen & Mary PERRY, 29th June - Right age for Thomas senior. This is the only THomas Perry/Perrey in that era in Gwennap

5. Check 1843 census
Only one Thomas Perry the right age in Cornwall - so that fits with my Thomas Perry & the baptism record.
Only one Thomas Perrey the right age - and he's living near St Day (a barber!) - so that fits.

How much evidence do I need? Is there any way to verify further? Are there things I haven't thought of?

Midlothian / Tait family - not getting very far...
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 07:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching this family, & a little stuck:

Father; Robert Tait b.12 July 1802 On census 1841, 1851, then disappears.  His parents are Robert Tait & Elizabeth Williamson.
Mother: Margaret Gray. On census 1841, but not 1851. Birth? Death?

Mary Tait bc. 1828 Emigrated to Australia 1853 on thames - but isn't listed in any census as family. Was she a cousin? Or out working early? May have been living with Murray family in 1841 Census - sister or not I'm not sure.
Elizabeth Williamson Tait, b.23 Sep 1830, Emigrated to Australia 1853 on Thames. I know her details in Australia.
Catherine Tait b.c.1831 Emigrated to Australia 1853 on Thames. Disappears in Australia somewhere.
Robert Tait bc.1835
William Tait bc.1837

How would I go about filling in the details and going back?  What are the best sources to check?

Some of this I only know through this posting from years ago, but I don't know any more or this person's sources:
He was the son of Robert Tait and Elizabeth Williamson m. 25/10/1794. His brothers were John b 14/1/1796 Crichton and William b 24/6/1803 Edinburgh. Sister Helen b 1800 Crichton. His three daughters emigrated to Australia in 1853. He also had two sons, Robert b 1835 and William b 1837.

Just one further complication - I work in overseas aid, & can't afford things like an ancestry membership at this stage in my life. So I need to use searches that are accessible without cost.

Canada / Annie Lucetta McFaul Ontario, b1822 - parents? Help?
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 07:42 GMT (UK)  »
Annie Lucetta McFaul, was from Hallowell, married Marcus Elisha Row(e).

Someone on mundia links her to Daniel McFaul & Hannah Cunningham (from there back to the Mayflower).

But... can't see the evidence that she was from THAT mcfaul family - Daniel had other relatives there.  Without evidence I'm stuck... and the person on mundia hasn't ever responded.

I don't have access to census or other records.  Can anyone help me understand next steps or sources?

Marriages Performed by- REV. JAMES ROGERS, PRESBYTERIAN MINISTER
Marcus C. Row and Anna McFaul, both of Hallowell, 19 July 1842. Witnessed by Daniel McFaul, Peter McFaul.

Merionethshire / Margaret Jones b. Trawsfynydd d. Margaret Pierce Ffestiniog
« on: Monday 14 November 11 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
I've been wanting to solve this for over 20 years, but I can only search free indexes, and it isn't adding up...

Margaret Jones (1814-1838)
* married Evan Pierce (b.11 Oct 1801 Ffestiniog) on 29 Aug 1834 at Ffestiniog. (From LDS microfiche years ago. Are there more details about where she was born or parents?)
* Son John c. 1834 (can't find birth)
* Daughter Elizabeth christened in Ffestiniog 6 Feb 1837
* Died 1838 Bwlcha Ffestiniog. (I believe it's 10 Feb, but can't find it anywhere).

Some 25 years ago I copied the LDS index that had Margaret Jones b.1 Jan 1814 christened 20 Feb 1814 Trawsfynydd - parents Richard Jones & Margaret Jones. Trawsfynydd is very close to Ffestiniog.

Family search lists them as separate
Margaret Jones, Birth or christen 1 Jan 1814 Richard Jones Margaret Jones
Margaret Jones Birth or christen 20 Feb 1814 Robert Jones & Catherine Owen.
Both have  same reference:
Index C05752-1 System origin Wales-ODM source film number:104547

Were there two Margaret Jones born in the tiny village of Trawsynydd in the same year, with one born on the day the other was christened? Or was there a copying error?

Any help appreciated.  Keeping up with any Joneses in Wales is challenging.
