Wales / Understanding court documents from 1890
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 12:14 BST (UK)  »
The attached is from 'The Swansea Prison: Nominal Registers: Men 1890-1893' on Ancestry.
I wonder if anyone can help me understand the abbreviations?

Under the column for 'Education' what I think says 'Iwp' - it may of course say something else and I have not read it correctly!

Also, under the column for 'Sentence' - does HL stand for hard labour? If so any ideas what this might consist of in 1890 Wales?

Thanks for reading

The Common Room / Find My Past Subscription
« on: Monday 18 March 24 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am being quoted £159 to re-join Find My Past, there is a note to say this included 20% discount.  Are there any other extra current discounts that people are aware off?

The Common Room / GRO birth records
« on: Tuesday 12 March 24 14:11 GMT (UK)  »
It is a while since I've used the GRO site and I  am trying to search for births in the 1950's. When I go on the pull down arrow to select the year of birth the selection of years in the list stops at 1934 and restarts at 1954. Is this a temporary or have I made a mistake?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Children's Homes in Rotherham 1939
« on: Tuesday 05 March 24 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Yesterday, with the help of Rosie99, I learnt how to do an address search for the 1939 Register on Ancestry.  Since then I have searched the addresses of what I believe to be children's homes but can't find any of them! Can anyone else see something I'm missing?

I have found on the internet a list showing the homes in 1933 which were run by the Rotherham Public Assistance Committee 1933.
These are the addresses
35 /37 St Ann's Road
Central Home, Easthill, Doncaster Road
121 Westgate
104 Clough Road

I know a lot of the names  will still probably redacted but is it likely that Children's homes just weren't listed on the 1939 Register?

The Common Room / 1939 search by address
« on: Monday 04 March 24 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Please can someone tell me if it possible to search the 1939 on Ancestry by address or maybe a map? And if so how where do I find it?
I know it is possible on FMY but I do not have a current subscription.
Thankyou

London and Middlesex / Classmates 1920s Fullham
« on: Wednesday 22 November 23 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm posting this on the off chance that someone may recognise someone - along shot I know! The photograph was in kept by my m-i-l. She is not on the photograph as I think she probably took the snap.
Working out her age and the rough age of the girls on the photo I think it was probably taken in the mid 1920s. I don't know the name of the school but she lived in Fulham at the time. There are  names of the girls on the back of the photo which I have also attached

Hi
I would love some help to identify the place in Stornaway  where this couple were living.
Can't decide if I need help with the handwriting or with knowledge of the islands!

The Common Room / Is this a well known snooker player?
« on: Sunday 06 August 23 17:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi
This photo shows a presentation of a cup to a local snooker  team. I seem to think the man presenting the cup was famous but I do not know who it might be - any ideas?
The photo looks like it was taken in the 1970.
