Hi all, I am missing the death record for my ancestor Edward Harris, and was wondering whether anyone on here may be able to help find it?

I have lots of information for him, but not a death!

Edward Harris
Born 27th June 1850 at Coseley, Staffs. to William Harris and Mary Millington

Living in Sedgley, Staffs. in 1851 and 1861.

Then married to Eliza Wilkes aged 20 in 1870 at Sedgley, Staffs.

1871 living at Tipton, Staffs.
1881, 1891 and 1901 living at Rowley Regis, Staffs.

1908 his wife Eliza died

1911 Edward was living at Tipton, Staffs., which is the last record of him I can find.

Can anyone find his death and maybe a 1921 census record if he was alive then?

Hi all, I have the baptism record for my ancestor Elizabeth Ingram, who was baptised 23rd March 1845 at Coseley, Staffordshire. It is noted that she was born on 27th February 1845 to parents Abraham Ingram and Margaretta.

However I can't seem to find the civil registration of the birth - surely there should be one in 1845?

Hi all, I am struggling to find a birth record for my 4th great grandfather Thomas Hancock, and was wondering whether anyone on here could help find him?

The following are the records I have of him -

Thomas Hancock
Married aged 20 in 1849 at Tickhill, Yorks. to Elizabeth Phillips

Died aged 68 in 1897 in Queensland, Australia.

I have four census records for him -
1851 aged 25, born in Tickhill
1861 aged 33, born in Tickhill
1871 aged 45, born in Tickhill
1881 aged 52, born in Tickhill

So his birth year ranges from 1826 to 1829, and it's fairly certain he was born at Tickhill.

However I can't find any birth records for a Thomas Hancock in this time period?

Hi all, I hope someone may be able to help me with a couple of birth records for my 3rd great grandparents, who I think were both born in Ayrshire.

The information I have for them is below -

Alexander Gibson
Married 1842 to Janet Ritchie at Tarbolton. Usual residence Tarbolton

Died aged 70, in 1883 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire. Parents noted as John Gibson and Marion (ne Drynan)

His census records are -
1841 - age 25
1851 - age 34 - born Tarbolton
1861 - age 45 - born Tarbolton
1871 - age 51 - born Tarbolton
1881 - age 65 - born Tarbolton

So I'm fairly sure he was born at Tarbolton. His YoB ranges from 1813 to 1820.

Janet Ritchie
Married 1842 to Alexander Gibson at Tarbolton. Usual residence Tarbolton

Died aged 57, in 1875 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire. Parents noted as *blank* Ritchie and Margaret Cowan.

Her census records are -
1841 - age 20
1851 - age 31 - born Tarbolton
1861 - age 42 - born Tarbolton
1871 - age 48 - born Tarbolton
1881 - age 59 - born Tarbolton

So I'm fairly sure she too was born at Tarbolton. Her YoB ranges from 1818 to 1823.

I just can't seem to find any birth records for either of them on ScotlandsPeople!

I wasn't sure where to post this as my ancestor spent his life in three separate English counties during his life so didn't feel right to plonk this in each one of those sub-forums! Please feel free to move it elsewhere if necessary!

I am trying to find more information on my 6th great grandfather, Joseph Hicklin.

I know the following details -

1828
(18th Feb)   19   Marriage to Elizbath Cotterill (1804-1830) at Abbots Bromley, Staffs.   They had two children - Joseph (b.1828) and Samuel (b.1829)

1832
(2nd Oct)   24   Marriage to Mary Thursfield (1811-1842) at Aston Juxta, Warwicks.   They had four children - George (b.1834), Edward (b.1836), Sarah (b.1838) and Martin (b.1840)

1841   30   Census   Holly Hall, Dudley, Worcs.   Occupation – agricultural labourer

1851
(23rd Jun)   43   Marriage to Sarah Boswell (1805-1870) at Dudley, Staffs.

1861   53   Census   Cannock Chase, Hammerwich, Staffs.   Occupation – agricultural labourer

I am still missing his birth record - though both his census records suggest he was born circa 1808 at Sutton, Staffs.?

I also need his 1851 census record.

And also his death record. I have found a few Joseph Hicklin's dying around the area between 1865 and 1876 but I can't confirm any to be certainly him.

Could anyone on here point me towards something I've missed or give me a new way of finding the information I am in need of?

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Parents of Leslie Hofton
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

I am researching the life of former Manchester United player Leslie Hofton.

Leslie was born 3rd March 1888 in Sheffield, and died 3rd February 1971 in Bridlington.

His 1891 and 1901 census records state that he is living with his grandfather Enoch in Kiveton Park, Yorkshire.

How do I find out which of Enoch's many children is Leslie's father/mother?

I have a feeling it is Frances (b.1869) as I can't find any record of her after 1881 - maybe she died giving birth to Leslie and her parents took the newborn in?

Enoch's wife Elizabeth died in 1890.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Harry Fathers - WWI
« on: Tuesday 07 November 23 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

I am researching the life of my 1st cousin 3x removed, Harry Fathers, who died o n 5th July 1917.

I have his military records and census records, but cannot find a birth record for Harry.

The 1911, 1901 and 1891 censuses all have Harry as born 1885 in Kiveton Park, but I can't find a birth record to back this up.

I would like a copy of his birth certificate.

The Common Room / Help with details re: an old footballer
« on: Monday 23 October 23 20:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I am currently writing a book about my village football club, Kiveton Park FC, in the southern-most reaches of Yorkshire.

I am covering notable former players, and have basic lifestories for all the ones I want to write about  - apart from one.

John 'Jack' Butler played for the club from 1902 to 1905, before moving into the professional game with Grimsby Town. He then moved to Plymouth Argyle in 1907/08, before the war more or less finished his career.

No matter how hard I look, I can barely find any details on his life, and don't know when he was born or died.

A Kiveton match report from 1904 states he was injured and his place taken by his brother - unnamed this time, but in a seperate game they play together as John Butler and Jas. Butler.

'Most' sources (including a Plymouth fansite here https://www.greensonscreen.co.uk/gosdb-players2.asp?pid=131) I have found have Jack down as born in 1885, but the only census record I know of for certain is from 1911, when he is noted as being a Professional Footballer living in Plymouth. Frustratingly, no place of birth is given, but he is listed as aged 34 - which would mean he was born circa 1877!

The English National Football Archive agree with the 1877 birth year, but state he was born in West Bromwich.

I have looked on the British Newspaper Archive and the only snippet of information I can find on his personal life comes from 1913, when it's noted he is an ex-service man, having played football with the Royal Artillery for two seasons.

With so many conflicting accounts, and with such a common name, where do I go next in the hunt for Jack's DoB and DoD?

Ayrshire / Birth records needed for two Ayrshire ancestors
« on: Monday 10 April 23 22:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

I was hoping someone might be able to help me find some birth records for two of my great-great grandparents, who were both born in Ayrshire in the early 19th century. They were married in 1842 in Wigtownshire but their parish record for the marriage is sketchy on details to say the least.

Alexander Gibson
1841 census - Age 25 (resident Otterden Gate, Maybole, Ayrshire)
1851 census - Age 34, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1861 census - Age 45, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1871 census - Age 51, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1881 census - Age 65, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1883 death - Age 70, parents John Gibson and Marion Dryman? (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)

So Alexander was likely born in Tarbolton, between 1813 and 1820.

Janet Ritchie
1841 census - Age 20 (resident Tarbolton, Ayrshire)
1851 census - Age 31, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1861 census - Age 42, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1871 census - Age 48, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1875 death - Age 57, parents *blank* Ritchie and Margaret Cowan (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)

And Janet too was likely born in Tarbolton, between 1818 and 1823.
