Warwickshire Lookup Requests / James Douglas
« on: Monday 11 March 13 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, i'm struggling to find a James Douglas on a couple of the census returns (1871/1881).
He was born in Coventry in 1837, the son of Joseph Douglas an ironmonger of Cross Cheaping, Coventry. At 14 (1851) he was still in Coventry as an ironmonger apprentice, and by 1861, was lodging in London at the home of William Barber, an Ironmonger from Coventry.
I can't find James again until 1891 as a widower, ironmonger labourer.

thanks

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / William Jones, born in Coventry in 1867.
« on: Monday 04 March 13 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, looking for descendants of a William Jones who was born in Coventry in 1867/68.
He looks to have been raised by his grandparents, and his mother who looks to have had three sons.

William became a cycle factor and cycle agent, but was also behind a company called the Caesar Cycle Company from about 1897. He was living in Kenilworth with his wife and two daughters by 1911.

thanks

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Lion Bicycle Company
« on: Thursday 02 August 12 09:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi, i'm writing a book on Coventry cycle manufacturers and need some help. I am trying to find out who the person and/or persons were behind a company called the Lion Bicycle Company.

Facts:
The Lion Bicycle Company are seen to be at 48 Leicester Street, Coventry in 1879 as seen in the 1879 Bicyclist Handbook stating 'this company are working in the same premises that Singer (cycle co.) 1st occupied offering 'Lion' ordinary (machines).
The 1881 census shows this address to be an unoccupied iron foundry.
1882 - Ray Miller's Encyclopedia of Cycle Manufacturers shows a 'Coventry Lion Co.' at Bilston Street, Wolverhampton.
1884 - a Lion Cycle Company is seen operating at Birmingham according to the Speedwell Club Bicycle & Tricycle Exhibition
1890 - In H. H. Griffin's 1890 book called Cycling, when talking of early bicycles he states 'these Dandy-Horse type machines were built by a cycle maker in Coventry, trading as the Lion Bicycle Company and afterwards proprietor of the chief music hall in Wolverhampton, publishing, on the back of his price list, a description of the machines'.
I hate to admit it, but having exhausted all avenues known to me, this has got me beat. Having checked the names of most of the music hall/theatre proprietors in Wolverhampton, i cannot link anyone so far to Coventry.
Any help/advice appreciated
thanks

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / seeking detective work on the Allen's of Newark
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 22:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, i'm looking for some help trying to track some distant relatives.

When my Great Grandad died during WW1, my Great Gran Edith Kimberley (nee Allen) remarried on the 19th July 1919 to George Allen (i think her second cousin??) in Newark. Edith already had one child (my Grandad Reuben Kimberley in 1914) but went on to have three further children with George whilst in Newark:
George E. Allen in 1921
Edith M. Allen in 1923
Frederick J. Allen in 1926

My grandad died in 1958, but i'm trying to find out if any of his step brothers or sister are still living, or when they died. I'm not sure if any stayed in Newark as they got older, and my dad seems to think that one may have moved to the east coast. It would just be nice to see if any are still living, or if not when and where they died, and if they themselves had children

not an easy task at all but i'd be glad of any advice or help.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / marriage search
« on: Friday 02 December 11 19:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, i'm looking for help to trace the marriage of my GGGG Grandparents Thomas and Mary Ann Kimberley.
Thomas was born in Coventry in 1800/1801, and died in the workhouse in 1877.
Mary Ann (surname unknown) was born in 1799/1800 in Coventry and died in 1865. they were both weavers and lived in the Much Park Street area.

My GGG Grandfather Thomas was their first born in 1825, so i'm guessing their marriage would have taken place in Coventry between 1820-25ish.

I'd love to get details of this event, such as my GGGG Grandmothers maiden name, and also confirm who their parents were.

many thanks in advance.
