Down / HELP - Marshall & Martin
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find details of my great grandfather, and great grandmother  His name was William James Marshall, and he was born in County Down. Her name was Isabella Martin.

The information I have is as follows:
The 1901 census shows William living in the townland of Island Bane.  He is shown as 12 years old (born about 1889 in Co Down).  He is living with his parents, James Marshall (age 50) and Mary Marshall (age 35).  Both shown as being born in Co Down.

The 1901 census shows Isabella living in Ringdufferin, as a 12 year old servant of Charles & Mary Breeze. She is shown as Bella Martin, but I think that it's the same person.

I have their marriage certificate from 7th February 1908, when they married at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Killyleagh.  William is shown as living in Ballymacarron, and his father is shown as James Marshall. Mary's father is shown as Thomas Martin. She is shown as living in Clea, and still shown as a servant.

The 1911 census shows him in the townland of Ringdufferin, as a 22 year old.  (Ringdufferin is where my grandmother was born, in 1914). He is now shown with his wife, Isabella Martin, who is also shown on his marriage certificate.

I know that William Marshall died on 30th April 1943, and I have a photograph of his grave stone in Killyleagh. I have no idea where Mary died, or is buried.  I have heard that she died in 1946, quite old,
I am trying to find out more about William & Mary's birth/baptism, and also details of their parents.  I know that William's father was James Marshall, and mother was Mary, but I am trying to find out more.  I have a lead that says the mother was a Mary Gailbrath, but I am unable to confirm this.  I have tried to order a birth certificate from the HSE in Dublin, but after three weeks it still hasn't arrived!

I know nothing about any possibilities for Isabella Martin's mother.

Is anyone able to provide confirmation of birth details of  William Marshall and Mary Martin, or confirmation that William's mother was indeed Mary Gailbraith.
Any information at all around Isabella Martin's mother would also help a great deal.
I am finding it quite hard to find Irish records, unless I have very specific details.  I am a member of ancestry.co.uk, but that doesn't seem to help much.

Down / Ordering Marriage and other Certificates
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to order a marriage certificate from NIdirect for a marriage between William James Marshall and Isabella Martin.  Ancestry.co.uk tells me that this marriage was registered in the Downpatrick registration district in the first quarter of 1908, volume 1, page 619.
However, when I go onto the official site to order, it tells me that I am unable to order unless I know the name of the town and church.
How do I go about finding this information?  If I had the registration district, quarter, and volume and page numbers, I could order a certificate form England with no problem.  It seems quite hard to order stuff from Northern Ireland without knowing very specific details.
I have some other information on other people in my family history that in England would ordinarily enable me to order certificates, but I don't have the fine details.  ???
Any help that I can be given would be appreciated.

Does anyone have any information about Mary NORTON, born 1824 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire?  I am interested in knowing about her parents and siblings.  Mary married Charles Lockey, and she was my third great grandmother.  Their daughter, Ellen, was my second great grandmother. Thanks

Hertfordshire / Therfield Information
« on: Sunday 25 March 12 19:32 BST (UK)  »
I am planning a visit to Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire/Leicestershire next month as part of my "family history quest".  From the research I have done so far, I am looking at the following families in Therfield, Hertfordshire: SLINET / GATWARD / NEWLING / COLLIS / ANDREWS / DOWSE / PORTER / NICHOLAS.  I am planning to visit the parish church and hope for the best through a search through the grave yard, but if anyone has any interest in these surnames in the village or area in general, please let me know, and I can provide more information on who exactly I am interested in.  Susan GATWARD (Bn 1832) is my 3rd Great Grandmother. Thanks.

I am researching the Harrison Family from the Batley/Dewsbury/Ossett areas or West Yorkshire.

Other family names from that area that I am interested in are Metcalf or Metcalfe, Senior, Burnley, Hall, Allott, Scholes, Newsome, & Sheard.

Kerry / Help wanted - Nelligan family
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my wife's family history on her maternal grandfathers side.

The name is Nelligan, and they emigrated to the USA, but originated, I believe, In Kerry, Ireland.

The information I have is as follows:

Dennis NELLIGAN born 1815-18 in Kerry, Ireland.
Married Joanna MURPHY, born 1822 Ireland

Emigrated to the USA in 1850 via New Orleans.

Their son was John NELLIGAN was born in Kerry, also emigrated to the USA.

John NELLIGAN married a Johanna KEANE in Louisville, Kentucky, although KEANE was born in Ireland.

KEAN'S parents were Jeremiah KEANE and Mary CONNORS

Any help with the above, or with the family names, would be appreciated.

I have a black and white photograph of my fathers National Service 'class' from Blandford in 1955.

Unfortunately, something was placed on top of it, and there are now three square 'sellotape sticky fixers' marks on it.  Each one is about two x two cm, and has left a white sticky residue.

Any ideas on how I can clean this up, without damaging the photograph?

All help would be appreciated.

Scotland / Help to find: Cecilia JOHNSTONE - Born Scotland - 1873/4
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my family history, and on my paternal Grandfathers side, his father was a Percy Alfred STEVENSON, born 21/09/1858 Islington, London, died 07/02/1941 Islington.

His mother was a Cecilia JOHNSTONE. (From the birth certificate of my Grandfather (Wallace))

The only information I can find on her is from the 1901 census returns, which show that she was born in Scotland.  (Shown under her married name of STEVENSON).

The 1911 census shows that Percy and Cecilia had been married 15 years (1896) but her place of birth is blank.

The 1901 census shows her as being born around 1874, and the 1911 as being born around 1873.

I have been unable to find any other information about Cecilia, and cannot trace the marriage between them.

Any help would be appreciated.

The only connection with Scotland, is the place of birth on the 1901 census, but that is all I have to go on at the moment.
