England / Lived in scotland, born in England but where? Help!
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have traced my family back to Thomas Weatherson/Weatherson b1816 living in Coldstream.  The scottish census entries for Thomas show that he was born in England.  I can only find him in scotland from 1841 and he died there in 1886.  He married in 1848 so just a few years before the start statutory registration which is frustrating as I could have possibly found out his parents names from there!

His wife died in 1854, he appears as a widower on all census' after that and I can't find him marrying again.  His death certificate describes him as a widower of Isabella Robinson (supposed to be Robertson I think) again leading me to believe he didn't re marry and therefore preventing me from finding out his parents names!

As he was born in 1816, therefore pre 1837 registration in England am I right in thinking that it won't be easy to trace where in England he was born?

Have I reached a unbreakable brick wall?

Thanks

Anya
Does anyone have any idea how I might go about trying to find out

Berwickshire / Old parish registers

Hello

Sorry if this has been asked before but for Scotland deaths pre 1855, is there any way I can find out a cause of death?  I have found a few parish burial records for some of my ancestors but I can't seem to find out their cause of death pre 1855.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Anya

Berwickshire / Weatherson/Weatherston, Coldstream

Hello

Can anyone help me?!  My 3x great grandfather, Thomas Weatherston/Weatherson married Isabella Robertson in Coldstream on 08.10.1848. I have the image of the parish register from scotlands people website.

A relative gave me a MI transcription of Thomas' gravestone in Lennel church yard which gave me the details of 3 of his 4 children - Margaret b 1849, d 1850, John b 1853, d 1854 and Isabella b 1854, d 1872.  It also gave me a year of death for his wife as 1854.  They also had a child Thomas born approx 1852 who I descend from.

I cannot find birth details for any of the children can anyone help?  The only information I have for his son Thomas' birth comes from census extracts estimating his year of birth as 1852.

I have found a death for the daughter Isabella on the statutory registers and also a parish burial register for his wife Isabella.

Thanks

Northumberland / Common surname help!

Hello!

I'm after some advice on how I can research my 2x Great Grandfather.  He was Thomas Watson.  The only certificate I have is his marriage certificate to my 2x Great Grandmother from 29.09.1888.  It states their ages were 21, he was an Iron Turner, lived at 9 and a half Blandford Street, Newcastle, his father was Thomas Watson also an Iron Turner.

From the certificate I concluded that he was born 1866/1867 and that his father was still alive at the time of the marriage.

I am assuming that he was born in the Newcastle area - don't know for certain and not sure how I can confirm this without spending a fortune ordering all the Thomas Watson births in the Newcastle area over the 2 year period!

I have a possible census entry for him in 1871, basically the year of birth matches and the father's name and occupation match with the marriage certificate.  I can't pinpoint him for definite on any other census'.  I can follow the Thomas Watson found on the 1871 census on the 1881 and 1891 census' (but not on the 1901 census) still living with his parents and the occupation of this Thomas matches my Thomas but am still not sure that this is my Thomas Watson as why would he not be living with his wife and very young child in 1891?? He does not appear with his wife and child on the 1891 census (she is listed as married but is living with her parents). By 1901 she and their child are still living with her parents, however she is described as a widow and remarries later in 1901.

I suppose from this I could conclude that they separated but don't know how I could confirm this.  It also seems that this is a likely option as the Thomas Watson I followed through the 1881 and 1891 census' disappears from that family in 1901, and my Thomas' wife in 1901 is listed as a widow so I suppose that he could have died sometime between the 1891 census where his wife is listed as married and the 1901 census where she is listed as widowed.

Sorry for such a long post! I'm just frustrated at not being able to take this line further back!  Does anyone have any tips on how I can research such a common name and confirm my theory that they did separate?

Thanks

Durham / South Shields Workhouse query
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm new to the board and am looking forward to getting some great advice from you all! My 2x Great Grandfather's death certificate states that he died 22.09.1911 in the South Shields Workhouse infirmary.  I have found him on the 1911 census living at 62 Francis Street South Shields.

Does anyone know if workhouse infirmaries admitted 'civilians' or were they for the exclusive use of inmates of the workhouse?  I'm just trying to establish if he was an inmate at some point between census night and his death.

Many thanks in advance!

Anya
