Scotland / time of birth on Scottish birth cert
« on: Saturday 27 January 18 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
hi, hope someone can enlighten me.

In England I was of the understanding that a time of birth was recorded in cases of multiple births.
I have a Scottish birth cert with a time of birth recorded and was wondering whether it also signified a multiple birth, or was it the norm to record the time of birth? The year in question is 1947.
thanks in anticipation

I have some family members born at Ushaw Moor between 1883-1893. the local RC church was not yet established then.
I have had the baptism records for nearby Esh , a much older parish, checked at the records office but with no success.

can anyone suggest where the baptisms would take place please?

thanks

Durham / South Shields pubs
« on: Monday 17 November 14 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ,

just been informed that a book 'South Shields Pubs'   by  Eileen Burnett  & published by Amberley has just gone on sale.
Report in The Chronicle today. Photos and brief info about location, owners, landlords,  etc.
Sample of book also on web.

Thought it could be a good reference book for ancestors in the beer trade.
cheers

World War One / likely places for care of injured soldiers from The Somme 1916
« on: Friday 31 October 14 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
I know this is a long shot.

Matthew O'Brien born Ushaw Moor, Durham.
Living South Shields from before WW1 until his death.

We are unable to find any service details, probably among the burnt records? Also we do not know either service no. or regiment (did say it was a long shot)
Guesswork says DLI or perhaps a Tyneside Irish regiment as his father was Irish.

The only fact we have is that he was injured at the Somme 1916, was brought to England to a hospital ? where his wife and 2 children were able to visit. The youngest a small baby born March that year.  The family stayed at a boarding house for that visit. there was also talk of French nurse he remembered, possibly in France before being sent to England.

The only clue, the boarding house suggests the hospital was not in the local area.

Hope someone out there might shed some light as all of his children are now deceased and the grandchildren are unable to help either.

living in hope!

we do know that the person we are searching was in the same professionall his life, so was hoping it was subject specific.

England / Mary O'Brien, born Barnes Surrey abt 1856
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 20:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help please?
Mary O'Brien married James O'Brien  (no relation) at St. Wilfred's Church, Auckland, Durham. Ater that date they appear in 1881, 1891, 1901 &1911 census.

The marriage cert states Mary's father is John O'brien.
Place of birth for Mary is Barnes, Surrey but cant find birth reg in any of the usual places.

Beginning to wonder if she was registered. She was RC religion so would have been Baptised. I don't know the area so have no idea which church.
Would Richmond have been the Reg area for Barnes?
In short, I have no trace of Mary before marriage.
