Armed Forces / Honorary Captain
« on: Sunday 01 January 17 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone help ?

What does honorary captain mean.  My possible gt gt grandfather, Frederick Curruthers Graham, was an engineer serving in India in about 1846.  He was made Hon Captain later in his career.  Does this mean he was part of a regiment? I am trying to find his whereabouts in 1860 and 1869. Whether he was stationed at Preston barracks and whether or not his wife, Helen Amelia Graham, came with him.   I have his pension record and it says he served 30 years in India and was out of India 2 years and 98 days.  Was he in England during this time I wonder ?

Any Ideas !

Thanks

Diane

Armed Forces / 3RD DRAGOON GUARDS
« on: Wednesday 17 August 16 11:55 BST (UK)  »

Hi

Could anyone tell me whether Andrew Alston Graham of the 3rd Dragoon Guards was stationed in England between 1 April 1857 and 28 June 1863.  I don't know what troop he was attached to.

He did do some service in India and he joined the service on 19 January 1856, doing half his service in the Cumberland Malitia.    I am trying to establish whether or not he was stationed in England in June 1860.

Any information you can give me would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Diane

Sussex / Baptisms
« on: Thursday 30 June 16 13:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can help?

I have the baptism of my gt grandfather Henry Leonard Graham, from St Annes Lewes for 1869.  It only gives details of child's name, parents names, abode, and Trade.  There is no information about sponsors etc.  Will there be any other information anywhere else that will give me more details about this baptism.  With christening records it seems that there is a lot more information given.  Is this just because it is a baptism as opposed to a christening.

Also under the Abode column  it has 'not known' yet all the other baptisms on the record have that column filled in e.g St Annes Parish.    Does this mean that the parents of Henry we're strangers to the parish.

I am confused !

Armed Forces / Postings Abroad
« on: Sunday 27 March 16 13:49 BST (UK)  »
My gt gt grandfather Henry Leonard Graham was born in 1860 in Brighton.  He was a soldier with the 5th Lancers.  After his birth he disappears and only appears again in 1869 for his Christening in Lewes with the same mother but a different father.  His next siting is in Suakin Egypt in 1885, I know this because he received the Suakin medal.  Then he appears in Brighton for his wedding in 1886.  These are the only appearances in England that I can find apart from Egypt.

He died in India in 1893 still a serving soldier

What I would like to know is, at what age would he have been able to join the 5th Lancers?   At what age would he have been able to  go to military school and would there be a record of that.

If he travelled abroad with a military family would I be able to trace ships logs etc. would he have been listed.

From my evidence and research it does seem likely that he went abroad with his military family but I have no idea how to go about finding out.

Has anyone got any ideas ??

Dublin / Death Records 1828
« on: Wednesday 07 October 15 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Could anyone tell me where I can find death records for Balrothary, Dublin from 1828 onwards.  I am looking for Michael Bissett, baptised 14 June 1828, in Balrothery.  Parents John Bissett and Mary Clarke.  There is another Michael registered on 30 August 1837 with the same parents so I am assuming that the first Michael must have died.

Can anyone help?

Thanks    Diane

Armed Forces / 64th regiment
« on: Friday 17 July 15 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

could anyone tell me where I could find information about a Captain in the 64th Regiment called Henry Graham.  I have no other information about him apart from this.  I obtained this info from a marriage certificate of his son, Henry Graham, who married in Ireland in 1885 and under ' Rank and profession of father' it only states Captain 64th regt.  Are there any lists that give information about Captains in particular (this means he was an officer doesn't it?) that were in the 64th.

Also the marriage took place in a Registrars Office, does this mean that they were not catholics?

Thank you

Diane

Laois (Queens) / What website for Irish Family History Research?
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am doing a lot of research in Ireland, as both sides of my family came from there originally.  I just thought Id ask if anyone has any preference for the choice of companies best suited for Ireland, Ancestry, Rootsireland etc.  I have a subscription with Ancestry at the moment but it does not cover Ireland unless you take out the worldwide subscription.  I am prepared to do that but thought I would get opinions from yourselves first about alternatives.

Has anyone any thoughts  ?

Diane
