World War Two / A long way to Denmark
« on: Monday 06 June 22 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Came across this photo amongst others from WW2 in old wallet belonging to my Dad. Can anyone offer any explanation of what and where it is? Writing on back may be name and address? My father served in RAF Regiment in Germany in late 1945 and early 1946 and I think this may be from then.

World War One / Private W DOUGLAS (KOSB 18569 and Essex Regiment 24816)
« on: Sunday 26 January 20 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find this soldier's first name and where he might have lived. He was awarded the 14-15 star for service with the KOSB. His medal record card indicates he served in the Balkans in Sept 1915. He seems to have transferred to the Essex Regiment at some point, and the award of the War and Victory Medals was from that regiment. There seems to be no other record of him in Ancestry's WW1 records and no soldier with either of these numbers is listed on the CWGC web site, which would seem to indicate he survived the war.

His 14-15 Star was amongst the possessions of an aunt who died a couple of years ago. Her surname was SCOTT and there doesn't seem to have been any relative with the surname DOUGLAS. He may have been an uncle, but none of the possible Douglas-Scott marriage records I've found fit that theory (there were no aunts on  her mother's side). Her family were from Lanarkshire, so I'm assuming he must have come from that area. Knowing his first name might help with finding him and explaining how the medal might have come into my Aunt's possession.

World War Two / Copyright WW2 Photos
« on: Thursday 27 November 14 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have 3 photos showing RAF personnel during WW2 which are stamped Copyright "Associated Press Photo" supplied by The Associated Press Ltd (Formerly Associated Press of Great Britain Ltd.) 85 Fleet St London. I'd like to post them to see if the personnel can be identified, but as guidance suggests copyright lasts for at least 70 years, presumably I would require appropriate permission. Could anyone suggest which organisation might now own the copyright? I tried e-mailing Associated Press (in US) but received no reply.

PS photos show what appears to be a crew discussing an operation (poss debriefing?), 2 airmen in full flying gear, and a chap giving a thumbs up with cartoons decorating wall behind. What looks like a name card (Richards) can also be seen on wall. Same cartoons can be seen behind crew in debrief photo and interior looks like it might be Nissen hut. In picture of airmen in flying gear one of them is sitting at what I take to be entrance to aircraft and there is painted sign on plane saying 'DINGHY RELEASE PULL HARD'
Photos belonged to my late mother who served in WAAF with 106 squadron at RAF Metheringham. If anyone thinks they may be able to help and would like a look at the photos please PM me.

World War Two / Buried at sea?
« on: Monday 06 January 14 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of my wife was killed whilst serving with the Navy in the Mediterranean during WW2. A comrade, who was wounded in the same attack, subsequently died of his wounds on shore and was buried in Algiers. There is, however, no grave listed for my wife's relative or others who died in that attack, though they are listed on the memorial at Chatham. Would those who died on board ship have been buried at sea, even though they seem to have been close to an allied-controlled port?

Canada / Four orphan sisters sent to Canada from Scotland via Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 23:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover what became of my grandfather's cousins who were orphaned in Stirling in Scotland in 1892 and sent to Canada in 1900 / 1901.

The four girls, surname YOUNG, were
twins Barbara and Helen (also known as Ellen or Nelly) born 10 Sep 1881
   Agnes born 16 Feb 1886
and   Catherine (also known as Kate, middle name Weir) born 28 Dec 1887.

After their mother died in Nov 1892 they were placed in the care of the Childrens Home, Whinwell, Stirling. They were later sent to Canada through Mrs Birt of Liverpool. The Whinwell records show Barbara and Agnes sailed on 1 May 1900 and settled in Montreal. They were followed by Helen (Nelly) and Catherine (Kate) on 16th May 1901.

The Library and Archives Canada Home Children Immigration Records database shows Barbara and Agnes arrived in Quebec on 27 May 1900 (departure from Liverpool given as 17 May) on the Vancouver in a party of 54 children sent by Mrs Birt and destined for Knowlton, Quebec. This database also shows Ellen and Kate arriving on the Dominion at Portland during May 1901 (sailed from Liverpool, 16 May) in a party of 77 children, 'probably Mrs Birt's to Knowlton, Quebec.'

I'm not sure where to look next to find out what happened to them and would appreciate any help.

Stirlingshire / McAlpines and Cowans
« on: Saturday 12 January 13 14:20 GMT (UK)  »
The death record (1868) for my 2xgreat grandmother Helen Johnston (ms McALPINE) gives her parents as Robert McALPINE (coalminer, deceased) and Margaret McALPINE (ms COWAN, also deceased). I have not been able to find a marriage record for Robert and Margaret, however Helen's oldest daughter was named Barbara Cowan Johnston and there is a Family Search record of a marriage between a Robert McALPINE and a Barbara COWAN in St Ninians in 1821, so my first question is could Helen's death record be wrong and her mother's name was actually Barbara? I'm not aware of Helen having any siblings whose records could be checked.

Family Search also has an entry for the christening of a Barbara COWAN in St Ninians in 1794 (Parents James COWAN and Margaret CAMPBELL), which might mean Margaret COWAN was Helen's grandmother. This Barbara appears to have a sister Helen COWAN (b 1799), whom Helen McALPINE might have been named after. I'd be interested if anyone has come across any other records which might back up these possible links.

Probable census records for Helen McALPINE before her marriage have her in service with no other family members present. I've found no census records for her mother, but there are census records for a Robert McALPINE of about the right age working as a coalminer in 1841 and a labourer at Bannockburn colliery in 1851. This Robert McALPINE is married to an Ann JOHNSTON (proclamation 1835 in St Ninians, no connection to Helen's husband's family) and there are a number of children from this marriage. I'm speculating that this could be Helen's father and that he re-married after the death of Barbara (or Margaret?). This Robert appears to have died before statutory records came in, so there is nothing to support my speculation and I'd be interested if anyone had come across anything to support or disprove this.

Thanks

Scotland / Hospital Treatment in 19th Century
« on: Sunday 04 November 12 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
After a lot of searching, I discovered that my 2xgreat grandfather died of bladder cancer in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in 1869. This surprised me as he had always worked as a farm labourer/ ploughman on farms in rural Stirlingshire and Perthshire. Anyone have any suggestions as to how a poor farmworker ended up receiving hospital treatment in the capital city in these days, or was this quite a common occurrence?

The Common Room / National archives response times
« on: Thursday 25 October 12 10:49 BST (UK)  »
I've recently used national archives electronic document ordering service for first time and after more than 3 weeks am still waiting to receive the document, in spite of their stated 'target' being 14 working days. After much searching on their web site, I found what appeared to be appropriate link to query progress, which I used, only to find the target for these responses is another 10 working days! Is it just me that thinks this is so slow or has anyone else had a similarly frustating experience?
