Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Census names information
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Have finally tracked my great grandmother's (Lavinia Groves) resting place to Ferndale cemetry. Unfortunately the name on the gravestone gave a middle name I was not aware she had-Rosina.
I knew she had named her daughter with the title Lavinia Rosina.and she too rests in the same plot. In the census of 1881,1891 and 1901 did they ask for middle names. I as yet can't find her birth certificate, although it is obvious in the 1891 census her daughter's name is given in full, while hers is not.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / 1875-Birth registration?
« on: Friday 15 July 05 20:50 BST (UK)  »
On a recent request for a birth certificate I was informed that although registration came into being in 1837, it was not compulsory to register a childs birth until after 1875. Can anyone verify whether  this is correct?

Glamorganshire / Liv,Lav,Love-when is a name not a name?
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 11:51 BST (UK)  »
When researching my Great gran-Lavinia Williams, born 1866 @old tredegar (so the censusus 71, 81,91 and 01 state) her christian name has been spelt differently i.e Lavinia, Livinia, Elvina and Lavynea. Her marriage certificate gives her as Livinia but her headstone is Lavinia R. (having suddenly acquired a middle name Rosina the same name she has given to her daughter, but is not recorded anywhere else). I believe the persons are the same people by following them through the addresses on the censuses and through marriage lines.
As yet have not been able to find her birth certificate by looking through BMD database and checking local registry offices. Are the BMD records complete for 1884-1887?  How long were people allowed to registrar a birth by law? Any thoughts at all-please?. :-[

Looking for any info. on the above named.   Lavinia was my great grandmother who was born in 1866 in Old Tredegar, Monmouthshire.   In 1883 at the age of 17 years, she gave birth to an illegitmate child - a baby boy - whom she named David John WILLIAMS.   This child was my grandfather.  David John was brought up at 16, Edmund Street, Tylorstown, Glamorgan by his maternal grandmother Sarah and his step-grandfather George BISHOP.    His mother also resided at the same address with her husband Thomas GROVES and her new family.   Dai John was brought up believing that Lavinia was his sister - not his mother.   Lavinia and Thomas GROVES moved to St. Albans, Herts. where she died at ther age of 86 years on 13th Aug. 1952.   Her body was brought back to the Rhondda Valley where it was interred with the bodies of her daughter Lavinia Rosina LEACH 18 years and grand-daughter Edith LEACH .  Desperately seeking the birth and death certs. of Lavinia GROVES.    Can anyone out there help me with my quest?    Many thanks...CB
