Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas ( Tom) Moore of Castleford. Up before the local beak !
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have posted this previously on the 'West Riding Look Up' section - which I think may have been the wrong place as I'm not asking for anyone to do a look up, just hoping for some hints about how to move forward. Apologies if it was a mistake.
I'm really interested in stories which have come down the family. I know that it's wise to treat them with a pinch of salt but some of mine have been very interesting and accurate. One of the stories is that my great grandfather, Tom Moore, ended up in front of the local magistrate for protesting during WW1. Tom had a pop works and a haulage business and his protest was that all his sons had gone off to war and the army(?) had requisitioned his horses and ruined his business.
As I said, I'm not sure that this story is factual and a stumbling block to further research is knowing when it might have happened. I presume that it would be reported in the local press but short of going through 4 years of local papers at the library has anyone any hints about where to start?  Where might I find the records of the magistrates' court? hopefully on line because I no longer live locally.
Many thanks.

I haven't been working on my family history for quite a while - house move, global pandemic etc... but I now want to get back to it.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John and Maria Moore of Fairburn
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 12:53 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help with any information about my gggrandfather John Moore please?
John lived in Fairburn Yorkshire with his wife Maria and had at least 5 children -John b 1854; Thomas
 ( my ggrandfather) b 1858; George b 1856;Mary Jane b 1860 and Alice b 1863. All the children were baptised at Ledsham.
I only know that John's wife was called Maria because of the children's baptismal records, as the only reference to a marriage of a John Moore I can find is one in 1845 at Monk Fryston to a Mary Wilcock - which is the wrong one ( I think - he would have been awfully young and it certainly wasn't a 'shotgun wedding' if the first child didn't arrive for 9 years! )
The 1881 census has John born in 1830 at South Milford but there my search ran out of steam. I would love to know anything about John and what Maria's maiden name was if anyone could help. Apologies if I have missed something obvious.
Many thanks.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Completed Requests / Peckfield Pointer Inn. Complete
« on: Tuesday 31 July 12 13:05 BST (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather William Dennison is described on the 1881 census as an Innkeeper/ Farmer  and his address is given as 'Peckfield Pointer Inn South Milford'. The Inn no longer exists but if I Google the name various businesses come up at 'Pointer Farm, Peckfield'. It seems logical to me that this is the site of the Inn, especially as William was also described as a farmer but I wondered if anyone had access to an old map which would show the inn and confirm my supposition.
Many thanks. Jane

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Star 'Pop' Works Temple Street Casteford
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 21:11 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather Tom Moore had a mineral water ( pop) manufacturing firm called, I think, 'Star Works' at Temple Street Castleford some time at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th Century. I have seen a 'cod' bottle with the firm's name on it but know nothing else about the company. I admit that all my research so far has been on line but I wondered if any of the very helpful Rootschat members know anything about the firm or can even point me in the right direction in my search.
The Moore side of the family- unlike the more amenable Rodgers, Listers, Dennisons and Holmes- are proving to be generally quite elusive and I'm going to have to do some serious searching to track them down !
Many thanks for any help or info you can provide.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Local charities Beverley
« on: Friday 29 June 12 13:17 BST (UK)  »
My mother is descended from Horatio Thomas Holmes who was a publican in Beverley. There is a family ' legend' about a local charity ( probably of the ' a loaf of bread and a new petticoat to 10 local spinsters' variety! ) set up by the family. Can anyone help with information about Beverley charities or can anyone tell me where I would research defunct charities ?
In addition there is a similar rumour about a commemorative window in the Minster - I've checked the Minster website without success. Does anyone know anything about it, or is the window, like the unicorn, legendary ??
Many thanks Jane

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Abraham Rodgers of Ecclesfield c 1770
« on: Saturday 16 June 12 12:47 BST (UK)  »
I am new to family history research and I am trying to find my gggg grandfather Abraham Rodgers ( Rogers ? the names seem to be interchangeable ) father of Joseph Rodgers who was born in Ecclesfield in 1796. I can find two baptisms for an Abraham in Ecclesfield at about the right time. One on 01.04. 1771, father George and another on 31.01.1768, father Richard. Can anyone give me any clues about how I find out, or does anyone know which, if either, is 'my' Abraham ? I would be very grateful.
PS all this started because I wanted to follow up a family story that my g.g grandfather Jonas Rodgers came to Castleford to build a bridge over the canal !!
