Australia / Death of Alexander Buchan 1900
« on: Tuesday 25 May 21 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Alexander left Aberdeenshire for Queensland in 1888, at the age of 18.  He married Bridget Grace in 1900, and died the same year.  She remarried a Mr. Harms and lived until 1956.  Her daughter Grace died in 1926 at 5 months old and her son Reginald was accidentally killed in January 1929 at the age of 13 years.  Can anyone shed some light on what happened to these people?  Alexander was the son of William Buchan and William Buchan, and my first cousin, 2xremoved.

Aberdeenshire / John Hepburn and Elizabeth Gordon
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 21:40 BST (UK)  »
These were my great-great grandparents.  John was born around 1822 in Mortlach, and Elizabeth was born 16Feb1821, also in Mortlach.  Her parents were John Gordon and Mary MacConnachie.  They married in Ruthven on 15May 1842  and my great-grandmother was born that same year.

I have been unable to find census entries for this couple either in 1841 before they married, or after, nor have I been able to find records of their deaths.

BTW, their daughter subsequently married James Finnie in 1865, but was committed to Banff Lunatic Asylum in 1888, where she died in 1931.

World War One / Bernard Morgan casualty
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 01:35 GMT (UK)  »
Bernard's wife, Theresa (nee Jennings), wore black for the rest of her life after he died in the Great War.  I don't know what division of the forces he was in.  He could have been from Ireland or Scotland, I am not sure, as I can't find their marriage on Scotlands People.  Theresa was born in 1886, but her family moved to Glasgow sometime between 1898 and 1901.

Can anyone tell me when he died and where he is buried?  I live in Canada so can't go to Kew to look it up.

Thanks.

Australia / William Grant Buchan
« on: Friday 19 July 13 22:54 BST (UK)  »
He was born in Morayshire, Scotland around 1887, son of James Buchan and Elsie Grant.  He died in Brisbane on 15Aug1951.  I am trying to fill in the other details of his life, such as date of emigration, spouse and children, and anything else available.

I have no idea where to start with Australia genealogy resources.  Any help would be very appreciated.

Scotland / McLeods from Skye to Stirlingshire
« on: Thursday 14 March 13 18:37 GMT (UK)  »
There is a family rumour that one of our Mcleod ancestors, who was a bit of a moonshiner (or whatever you call them in Scotland), moved either to or from Stirlingshire.  He would have been connected to Francis Mcleod from Derry and William Mcleod and his wife Roseanna Jackson.  The latter couple married in 1854 and had sons Francis, William, James, John, Daniel and James, as well as a bunch of girls.  Can anyone shed any light on this rumour, which I have been unable to substantiate?

Thanks.

Northamptonshire / burgin and vaughan, Wellingborough
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 04:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking anyone interested in the surname Burgin, especially those around Thrapston, and Wellingborough, including the family of Edward or Edwin Burgin, who was brother to my great-grandmother.  Edward was born in 1850 in Wolverhampton, but then moved first to Grantham, Lincolnshire and then to Thrapston, where he died in 1925.

This has been a difficult family to trace as there are Irish roots, and Edward's brother was born in Saint John, New Brunswick while his father was stationed there with the army.

Stirlingshire / Daniel McLeod born in Denny 1867
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
His parents were William McLeod and Roseanna Jackson, an Irish couple.  His DOB was 26 Jun 1867.  I can find him in the 1881 census still living with his widowed mother but I can't find him for certain after that, nor can I find his death in scotland's people.  I hae checked passenger lists on findmypast but could not pin him down exactly.  I also checked Canadian census records for 1901 and 1911 but also came up blank.

Any one out there who knows this family or could make some suggestions to me?   Thanks.

Stirlingshire / James Murray and Jessie Stevenson of St. Ninians
« on: Monday 07 January 13 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking more information with regard to this couple.  James was born 1787 and died in 1867. On his death certificate the name of his wife looks more like Jefsie than Jessie, but this seems an unlikely name.  I don't know their marriage date.  I have 6 children for them, Margaret, James, Agnes, Edward, John and William.  Son James MAY have been born somewhere in Ireland.

Does anyone have any connection with this family?

Aberdeenshire / Margaret Chrystall Gray
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 01:00 GMT (UK)  »
Margaret was my aunt by marriage to my mother's brother Edward George Hazel.  She was born 5Oct1904 in Ballater, daughter of Alexander Gray and Jane Rutherford Singer Pyper.  I have a connection to a Gray family and a Chrystall family on my father's side, also from Aberdeenshire and I am wondering if there is any connection between/amongst these Grays and Chrystalls.

Jane Gray was the daughter of James Gray and Anne Middleton and was born in Udny 11Dec1802.  Jane Chrystall married Jane Gray's brother, James.  Jane C. was the daughter of William Chrystall and Jane Stewart, born 9Sep1802 in Foveran.  James was born 26Feb1803 in Udny and married on 23Jul1837.   Jane Gray married John Buchan of Logie Buchan, born 1801, on 12Jul1823.  They are my 2X paternal great-grandparents.

Chrystall struck me as a very modern middle name when I first found it, but it is only now that I found the Chrystall family that I realized it is probably a surname.
