Pembrokeshire / William Rowlands b1808: Marries Anne Hudson 1847 Q2 Narberth
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 08:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Readers

The Walton East, Pembrokeshire, census pages for both the 1851 & 1861 show the occupants of the farm Danycoed / Danecoed as being the Rowlands family wherein can be seen William Rowlands b1808 and his wife Anne with a calculated DoB of 1820/21.

Further research using GRO.com and their children’s names indicates Anne's Maiden Name to be 'Hudson'.

Using the Ancestry archive it can be 'seen' that the Civil Registration(?) of the couple’s marriage is recorded for both of them as: Narberth, Vol XXVI, page 983, albeit that in the case of Anne the details need close looking at!

However, the recording by FreeBMD of Anne's details have suffered a transcription error, being: page 933.

I have consulted the Help Pages of FreeBMD in an attempt to report this transcription error and have found them to be rather complicated to the point where I have 'given up' the attempt.  If any reader feels sufficiently confident in my research and can better understand the process for reporting errors, please feel free to do so.

Somerset / Batheaston and the 1939 (Its not a census, just a list)
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello Researchers & Readers,

After several years of working on the GRAY's of Batheaston and Cullompton, it has only recently dawned on me that I haven't seen any WWII Special 1939 Lists for those family members that lived in Batheaston at the time.

What am I doing that is not quite right?

I've used the search facility for "Batheaston and the 1939 List" and no results were shown.  Am I in the correct forum of the Bulletin Board?

Glamorganshire / Hannah JOHN b1870 Q2, Morriston, (Llangyfelach) Swansea
« on: Sunday 20 March 22 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Fellow Researchers
I am researching the genealogical history of William Rowlands b1860, Llys y Fran, East Walton, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

I have reached the point where I want to add his wife to the tree whom I am comfortable to believe is Hannah John, b1870 Q2 Morriston, Swansea, Wales, who is known in the Civil Registration system as 11a 608.  However, finding the appropriate page in Ancestry is proving to be rather challenging!

Entering Hannah’s details into Ancestry Search provides a link to the 11a 608 Hannah, but the associated and presented page is for the First Quarter, not the Second Quarter of 1870.

Can any readers provide a ‘work around’ to reach the Ancestry page for Rowlands Births, during the Second Quarter of 1870, without including a named individual in the search fields?

South Africa / Potgietersrus Cemetery, Pietersburg, Limpopo, South Africa
« on: Friday 13 August 21 10:36 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for some help trying to trace a cemetery which back 1963 appears to have been known as: Potgietersrus Cemetery, Pietersburg, Limpopo, South Africa.

The information has come from original document: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91J-29X4-M

My best guess is that the cemetery name might well have changed to something with a more local influence, but my searches of websites which have helped in the past have on this occasion drawn a blank.

Unless I'm doing something not quite right!

Looking forward to some help, Please and Thankyou.

Some weeks ago I was offered a 'hint' for a distant relative see the document:
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/60522/images/43283_adm_188_9-0359

With the help of other RootsChat'ers I read that George Edward Dodson (b 1855, Bathford), drowned whilst serving on HMS Aurora.

I have since been searching the Internet in an attempt to discover any 'Story' connecting George Edward Dodson's drowning with his service on H.M.S. Aurora, I have now discovered an interesting commentary at:
https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000587/18750102/030/0010 continued on . . . /0011
I have since tried and failed to find a list of names of those 15 casualties to see if Geo' Edw' Dodson name is thereon.  Is it likely that such a list might be found, or where-else I might look to see where, if anywhere his death has been 'formally' recorded?

Thank you, JohnG_Swansea.

The Common Room / The "Go To Tree Icon" on Search Outcomes with 'FamilySearch'
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for stopping bye and reading this post.

When searching for potential relatives on 'FamilySearch..org the outcomes of the search are shown in table format with the extreme right-hand column showing one, two or three icons, depending upon the options for viewing the information in the columns to the left.

This enquiry concerns the icon showing that the information, to the left, can be viewed in 'Tree' format.  This icon, when available, is usually to the left of the column.

In the several years I have been using 'FamilySearch' I have often wondered what activates this particular icon?  I have added a fair few individuals to 'FamilySearch' and some have, over a period of time, had this icon added to search outcomes, whilst other individuals languish without this very useful icon being attached thereto.  Is it possible to activate attachment of this icon to Search Outcomes, or is it a function of the system which drives the website?

I've dipped into the 'Help & Guidance' on the website but not found anything helpful, what if anything, have I missed?

Your thoughts and where appropriate your guidance will be read with interest.

Armed Forces / Royal Navy Service Record 1870's: Help to interpret, please.
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Whilst researching a distant relative I have come across a Royal Navy(?) Service Record:

https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/60522/images/43283_adm_188_9-0359

Having no military background or connections, I am having some difficulty interpreting what is in front of me.

George Edward Dodson (b 29 April 1855, Bathford, Somerset) appears to have signed-up on 29 April 1873 for a 10 year engagement.

I do not understand the final entry on his record sheet, being: D. D. followed, possibly by the word Drowned.

It would be helpful if someone familiar with Navy ‘Jargon’ could comment further.

Thankyou.

Devon / Rediscovering a URL path to a previously seen document.
« on: Sunday 11 April 21 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Way back in 2015 I downloaded from somewhere (almost certainly) Ancestry <dot> com a copy of the School Register (dates of registration and dates of moving on) for the first school my grandfather* attended in Cullompton, Devon, back in 1890.  *Edward Charles Gray, b: 1 August 1886

The download was accompanied by the reference:
    GBOR-SCHOOL-DEV-7779C_EFA1_1-0057
    the page is showing admissions from 14. 4. 90 to 27. 7. 90 (1890)
I would now like to track back to that document to search the adjacent pages for entries relating to any of his siblings and cousins that might have attended the same school.

I have searched Ancestry’s “All Collections” and “Card Catalog” without any credible results.

I have repeated the searches with both Gray & Grey, without any credible results.

I have sought help from “A’s” virtual agent(?) with a response which under different circumstances could have been considered modestly amusing:
Words to the effect: “I’m still learning how to do this.”

Any help in finding a path to this page would be appreciated.

Occupation Interests / Passenger Services: UK-West Africa, 1920's-1930's
« on: Sunday 01 November 20 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for stopping bye to read this enquiry.

Ancestry have offered me a number of Passenger Lists for a Civil Servant travelling to and from Lagos, Nigeria, sometimes accompanied by his wife during the 1920's and 1930's.  I can see only one date, for the UK end of the voyage on any individual document.  Are there any websites showing both departure and arrival dates for West African services during the 1920's and 1930's?

Thank you, JohnG_Swansea.
