Australia / Road block - SMITH, Thomas John
« on: Thursday 16 January 20 08:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for more information on Thomas John SMITH for his daughter who is now 92 years of age.

Tom, as he was known was said to be born in Launceston, Tasmania. The search for his birth certificate hasn't been fruitful so any details of who his mother and father were are unknown.

Tom's WWI record states he was aged 19years 8/12 months when he enlisted in August 1915. This would put his birth to be 1895.  His daughter Marjorie believes that he, as many others did lied about his age and he was younger than he declared.   The records also state that his father was William Smith of Walter Street, Launceston.

That is all that is known from found records. I have started constructing a family tree on Ancestry.com.au and Tom doesn't show any leaf suggestions at all.

The daughter Marjorie was born in 1927 in Melbourne and was an only child for the couple, Tom and Elsie.  Elsie was married previously and was widowed.  Tom was married before and divorced. It is unknown whether Tom married in Tasmania or Melbourne, but assumed he moved to Melbourne after he divorced. It is also unknown whether there were any children from Tom's marriage.

Tom and Elsie never married and Tom was not named on the Marjorie's birth certificate so no information gleaned from that. Marjorie's father was named as Elsie's husband who had previously died.  Marjorie lived with Elsie and Tom and was told when she was fifteen years old that Tom was her father and not her step father.

Other snippets of information are:
- Tom may have had a brother called Bob and a sister called Edna
- Tom worked as a bricklayer after he moved to Melbourne
- lived in Brunswick and Carnegie
- died in 1977 in Repat Hospital in Heidelberg.

Searching on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch and National Archives has come up with nothing at all other than his WWI records.

Any assistance or direction suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Marjorie and I have spent many hours searching and finding nothing at all. Marjorie would love to find out something about her father and his family.

kind regards

Patricia

« on: Saturday 08 September 12 03:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching William Arthur Taylor born in Barbados, William had two sons William Henry Taylor b 1873and Thomas A Taylor b 1875 both born in New York.

I am trying to find out more information about when they arrived in Britain and what they were doing in New York etc.

They are on the 1881 uk census and living in lodgings in Middlesex with
Mary Evans,

TAYLER, William,       Married           , 52, General Labourer, born West Indies
EVANS, Mary,           Married, 33, born Wales
TAYLOR, William,                       8, born Menby(?)
TAYLOR, Thomas,                     5,  born Menby(?)

The 1891 census has the birthplace as Barbados and New York and in 1891 they were living in Swansea, Wales.

At this point I do not know how long William Arthur Taylor spent in New York  or whether he met Mary Evans there,
Any information would be very much appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Mining Accident 1931 - Caerau
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 08:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Iis anyone able to lookup the details of the mining accident that happened at Caerau in 1931 when 3 men died?

I've looked on the Coalmining History Resource Centre. cmhrc.co.uk but they only have details recorded if there were 5 deaths or more.

I'm specifically interested to find out if a James Frederick Lambert was one of the 3 men who died.

Hi

I am looking for William Henry Taylor who was born in New York (British Subject) in 1873. William and his brother were both born in New York with his brother Thomas being born in 1875. So he would have travelled to Britain sometime between 1875 and the census in 1881. 1881 shows them living in Middx so more than likely arrived in London.

In 1881 he was living in  a lodging house in Little Stanmore Middlesex with his father and brother and Mary Evans.

TAYLER, William,      Lodger,  Married, 52, General Labourer, born West Indies
EVANS, Mary,            Lodger,  Head, Married, 33, born Wales
TAYLOR, William,     Child,     Single,                  8, born Menby(?)
TAYLOR, Thomas,   Child,     Single,                   5,  born Menby(?)

In 1891 he was living in Swansea at 108, Rodney Street, with his father, brother and the same Mary.

TAYLOR, Wm A, Head, Married, 69, Compositor, born Barbadoes, West Indes
TAYLOR, Mary A, Wife, Married, 52, born Swansea, Glamorganshire
TAYLOR, Wm H, Son, Single, 18, Labourer Corporation, born New York, United States
TAYLOR, Thomas A, Son, Single, 15, Labourer Corporation, born New York, United States

In 1901 he was living 1901 census   at 19, Charles Row, Cwmdu, Maesteg

TAYLOR, William, Boarder, Married, 29, Haulier (Colliery), born New York America (British Subject)
