The Common Room / Medieval girls names (Completed)
« on: Tuesday 22 June 21 18:55 BST (UK)  »
A cousin mentioned she'd found reference to a nun called Christina who she believed was connected to a branch of our family. The nun was born ~1097 and died ~1155. I have no doubt that the nun actually existed but I'm curious about her name. Was it a medieval name or was it perhaps a more modern translation of a medieval name?

Confirmation or otherwise would be appreciated or direction towards a reliable source of names from that period would be appreciated.

Kent / Affra origin
« on: Friday 28 February 20 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
One of my cousins (b1859) has the middle name of Affra. Does anyone know the origin of it please?

I have found mention of an AUCHER family in East Anglia which has some Affras in it which goes back to the 15th century. They were gentry but my cousin's family weren't that elevated :D

Any guidance would be much appreciated :)

Buckinghamshire / Christopher COLLINGRIDGE bapt c1735 Middle Claydon
« on: Monday 08 April 19 15:41 BST (UK)  »
Some while back I was given information about Christopher COLLINGRIDGE being the son of Stephen COLLINGBRIDGE which I wasn't able to verify at the time. Later I found the baptism in Middle Claydon to Stephen but his wife's maiden name was given, not her married name. From memory her name was Hellen COCK. The marriage took place in South Oxfordshire close to the county boundary. I was able to find Hellen's family in North Oxon but nothing about Stephen. Unfortunately courtesy of a move, I don't have access to my notes.

Does anyone any information on the baptisms in Middle Claydon around 1735 please?

Oxfordshire / Secondary schools in 1960s
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find which towns children from Finmere would most likely have transferred to in the 1960s. Also how they would have travelled there, eg bussed or with a bus pass. I am NOT interested in specific schools and most definitely am NOT interested in specific children.

The nearest ones I can find now are Brackley, Buckingham (both out of county), Banbury and Bicester.

Oxfordshire Education department won't help and the primary school won't answer their phone.

I don't know where else to look for the information and I can't get to Cowley. If there is another way to find this information, I would appreciate a link.

Scotland / Recording of Births 1970-1980 (*General query*)
« on: Tuesday 11 September 18 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Just a quick question: for births registered between 1970 and 1980 where the parents are not married, would the father's name be recorded if given or would it be left blank? (I do mean 1970-1980, not 1870-1880 :) )

London and Middlesex / Arthur FISHER d 20 Nov 1970 Vietnam, bur London (Complete)
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 16:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the cemetery in London of Arthur FISHER on behalf of an American friend.

Arthur FISHER was born 31 July 1942 in Ireland. He emigrated to the USA. He married an English girl (no further details) and at the time his death on 20 Nov 1970 he was a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. He lived in East Finchley, London N2.

There's no middle name(s) given on the headstone.

The background suggests an old cemetery. There's a partially toppled large headstone behind Sgt Fisher's, a lot of well established bushes and trees and it looks like old pine or fir debris around and on the graves. The ground is uneven where it's sunk with the result the kerbstones are uneven. I know :) That could be any of the older cemeteries :D I'm looking at East Finchley Cemetery as well as St Pancras and Islington Cemetery. It could be Brookwood.

Deceased Online doesn't have Sgt Fisher listed nor does Find-a-Grave. I'm gradually working my way through the sites I have bookmarked but I no longer have subs to either Ancestry or FindMyPast.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Given name 'Nanny'
« on: Thursday 01 September 16 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Just a quick question:

What is 'Nanny' (the given name, not the occupation) an alternative of or pet name for?

I've seen it a few times in 19th century registers.

The Common Room / Death Certificate mistakenly issued - Topic now closed, thank you
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 12:25 BST (UK)  »
During a conversation with fellow researchers, someone wondered what would happen if two people were mixed up (in, say, hospital, similar names, appearance) and a death certificate was issued for one who was then found to be still living.

Anyone know how that person would go about getting the death certificate cancelled?  We've tried register offices and the GRO and they have no idea.  I'm thinking it would maybe have to go to court?

NB: This is hypothetical but may have happened in the past

Surrey / LITTLE: Charles, Robert and an unnamed dau born Lambeth (2nd amendment)
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
Phil(l)ip John LITTLE and his wife, Jane (nee COLLINGRIDGE), had a number of children, most of them apparently unregistered and some of them seemingly unbaptised as well! Some are being found via their marriages

So far my cousin, Jean, and a lady in Canada have found the following:

Thomas Henry (b abt 1878/9, possibly Lambeth, m 1899 Lambeth)
Maria (bapt 4 June 1880, Lambeth, seems to have died Q2 1880)
Philip John (b 14 June 1881, bapt 16 May 1882, Clerkenwell, home address Lambeth)
Mary Jane (b abt 1883 Lambeth (sorry missed her off)
Joseph (b abt 1883/4, murdered in arson attack on home 1894) **
Charles (b 12 July 1888, Lambeth) *
unnamed dau (b 6.35pm 11 May 1892, Lambeth) *
Robert (b 10 July 1897, Lambeth) *

There could be three more children (b abt 1886, 1890 and 1894).

Jane also had an illegitimate son b 14 June 1875.

* These 3 births appear on Ancestry who seem to have only filmed the left hand page of a 2-page entry. The rest is only in a "View Record" transcription.

Does anyone have access to the full entry of the 3 births please? If they are available online could you let me have the URL, if not, a transcript would be fine.  I'm not sure where these registers would be held.

** The report on the fire says Philip and Jane had 2 children sleeping in the front bedroom with them and there were 3 children sleeping in the back bedroom. I'm surmising if was Charles and the unnamed daughter with their parents and Thomas Henry, Philip John jnr and Joseph in the back.

Any help would be much appreciated.
