Australia / Jessie Hay Cameron, SA
« on: Saturday 21 June 14 06:47 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor James Orrock married his second wife, Jessie Hay Cameron in 1856 at Gawler. She went on to die in 1880 at Truro, aged 63. At her marriage she was apparently she was 39 and the daughter of Donald Cameron. However recently I have wondered whether she was the widow of Charles Cameron and that her father was Donald but a different surname.

The main that got me thinking this is that there is another Jessie Hay Cameron who got married to John Parker Buttfield in 1868. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/31982129?searchTerm=buttfield%20cameron&searchLimits=dateFrom=1868-01-01|||dateTo=1868-12-31

This Jessie's father died in 1848 at Waymouth Street, Adelaide aged 39. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/71611372?searchTerm=charles%20cameron&searchLimits=dateFrom=1848-01-01|||dateTo=1848-12-31|||l-state=South+Australia

Everything sort of fits I am just after opinions and possible other children/further information

Ayrshire / A Montgomerie dilemma
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 09:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am a descendant of Margaret Harvie (nee Gilmour) born 1820 at Beith, the daughter of John Gilmour and Margaret Montgomerie of Beith, Ayrshire. I am having some confusion with Margaret Montgomerie's family.

I believe she is the youngest child of James Montgomerie and Janet Shedden. Born the 17 July 1799 at Beith. James and Janet also had these children:
William 1772
Mary 1777
Mary 1780
Margaret 1781
Agnes 1787
Janet 1788
Agnes 1790
Janet 1792
Robert 1794
Jean 1796
and my Margaret in 1799

However then the only marriage I can find that fits this couple is the 23 Dec 1763 in Dalry. Any ideas/opinions??
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTK1-BXJ (link to marriage transcript)
I don't think this could work because the first child is only recorded in 1772. And since they kept having kids until 1799 I don't think there could be unrecorded baptisms. Also that is over 30 years of having children, which with my maths doesn't work. That is presuming Janet Shedden got married at a child-bearing age and couldn't have any kids after about 40-45 years of age.

Is it possible that the marriage may have happened when she was younger, hence not having children for nearly 10 years. Has anyone seen or heard of instances of this happening? Or is this record I found maybe a 'promise of marriage' or an arranged marriage that was recorded in the parish book? I'm not exactly sure how marriage worked in the 1700's.

Thanks for any help in advance :)

Cornwall / Which Christopher!
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 08:42 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor was Christopher Venning who married Ann Westlake in 1823 at Laneast. I am having trouble determining his baptism. The censuses state that Christopher was born about 1790 in St Clether.

Unfortunately there are two baptisms for Christopher Vennings in St Clether in 1790. One the son of John and Jane (Ham) and the other son of George and Margaret (Marshall).

Other online trees and forum messages have Christopher mainly as the son of John and Jane. However I am not sure.

Ann Westlake and Christopher's children were:
John 1824 (went to South Australia)
Christopher 1826
Jane 1829 (went to SA and married Richard Jasper; my ancestors)
Edward 1831
Mary 1834
Elizabeth 1836
Joan 1838
Sarah 1840
Jacob 1841
Philippa 1843

The main thing that is making me doubt Christopher being the son of John and Jane is that George and Margaret Venning had a son Jacob. Nowhere else in the other Venning families can I find a Jacob Venning, that is closely related. The Jacob seems to come from Margaret's father, Jacob Marshall.

Another thing I think I should mention is that I believe John Venning and George Venning are brothers, sons of Edward and Salome (Colmer) Venning... so some of the names may be the same.

Any thoughts and opinions? Or anything else to shed some more light on things

Thanks

Cornwall / Just cracked an illegitimacy... Now What?
« on: Saturday 17 May 14 00:00 BST (UK)  »
I had an illegitimacy for an ancestor born in 1812 and just presumed there would be no records to reveal the father any further than the daughter bearing the middle name 'Dunstan' on the baptism record. Her name was Elizabeth Dunstan Hicks born in Perranarworthal around 1812. Her mother Elizabeth Hicks was born in 1792 in Feock, Cornwall and she later married Thomas Pedler in 1821.

I have just found here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=021-p182&cid=2-1-4-23#2-1-4-23
The quarter session outline describing a bastardy case for a daughter of Elizabeth Hicks of Perranarworthal and Nicholas Dunstan, jnr. of Kea.

So now presuming that Nicholas' father is also Nicholas I have come up with 2 possibilities. These are brief outlines so may contain errors.

POSSIBILITY 1 - Nicholas Dunstan bap. 1793 in Kea, son of Nicholas. Went on to marry Ann Bennets in 1816 at Kea.
POSSIBILITY 2- Nicholas Dunstan bap. 1784 in Feock (Elizabeth Hicks was born here as well), son of Nicholas and Dorcas. He married Joanna Bryant in 1833 at Feock.

Personally I am thinking number 1, despite being younger than Elizabeth at 19. He was still probably capable of getting the job done  ;)

Cornwall / James Michael of Perrannarworthal, Gluvias
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 00:34 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine James Michael was born around 1810 in Perranarworhtal, the baptism that fits is that of a son of James and Ann Michael. It appears that she was Ann Rouse and James was their eldest son. Following through they had John, Charles, Grace, Mary Ann, Eliza, Matilda and Belinda/Melinda.

The father, James, is what really has me puzzled. According to the marriage record he was a widower, so I looked for another marriage and the closest I could find to another marriage of his is to Elizabeth Coad in 1800 at Gwennap. However this family's surname seems to be more Michell. This couple only appear to have had 2 daughters: Mary and Elizabeth.

I believe James (the father) died in July 1836 and was buried in Kenwyn and his wife Ann died in 1852. On the baptisms of his children James is given as a powder maker

What I'd like to know is more further back about the Michael/Michell family... Does anyone think the Michell-Coad marriage seems to work with the Michael-Rouse one? Who were James' parents?

Thanks,
Blake  :)

« on: Thursday 10 April 14 08:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

My mum would really like this photo of her father coloured. He was a brilliant showjumper and this photo is rather special to her. She wants a really nice colour version of it. I have a similar photo which I will attach in a subsequent post to help with colourings.

Thanks in advance,

Australia / The Parbs mystery
« on: Monday 13 January 14 01:18 GMT (UK)  »
My g-g-g-g-grandfather Johann Joachim Parbs/Parbst/Pabst arrived in SA in 1845. He was a son of Hans Jochim Parbs and Catharina Bruns/Brundt. Is it possible that Wilhelm Ludwig Hans Joachim PARBS who married Therese SCHREIER (nee LESCHEN) in 1857. What are there ages from the registration?

There is a 31 year old Hans PARBS who arrived in 1857 on the Peter Goddefroy as well as Therese LESCHEN. So it is probable that they married. But since the marriage record has Hans' father as Hans Johann PARBS I would think that he is a brother of my Johann Joachim PARBS. Any one got an opinion in this.

There is also a sister of Johann Joachim, Johanna Christiane Maria PARBS/DUBE/ANDRISKE/STAEHR if that helps.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1842 English Will
« on: Tuesday 26 November 13 00:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone decipher this will. Only include the bit about James Stevens and Daniel Wells Stephens (seems to be connected). Don't worry about the bit to do with Abraham Stroud. I am just having trouble with some of it. I can only make out every second or third word so if someone could decipher the whole thing I would be very thankful.

Radnorshire / Which John Price could he be?
« on: Sunday 21 July 13 04:35 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine, John Price married Ann Moss on the 28th November 1814 at St. Paul's, Gloucestershire. He continues to live in Gloucestershire, living in the parish of St Phillip and St Jacob in Bristol.
According to the censuses he was born around 1790 in Radnorshire, Wales.
I tried a search on FamilySearch and it returned several possible results:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AJohn~%20%2Bsurname%3APrice~%20%2Brecord_country%3AWales%20%2Bbirth_place%3ARadnorshire~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1788-1792~
There could even be more possibilities.

Anyway perhaps someone can help me find which John Price he is.
Also if it helps his children's names were: Sarah, Ann, Eliza, Mary, Martha and John. There may be more of them, than that what I have found.

Many thanks in advance.

Blake
