Occupation Interests / Krooman
« on: Friday 14 December 07 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
I would be interested to hear from anyone with an ancestor whose occupation is described as 'Krooman' on census or other records.

Incidentally, this is not a misspelling of 'crew man' (although this group of people were mariners): the word originates in the West African tribe, the Krao or Kraoh. It is also found as 'Kruman'.

South Africa / Was your ancestor on the Waratah?
« on: Thursday 27 July 06 20:43 BST (UK)  »
Passenger and crew lists of the Waratah, which disappeared between Durban and Cape Town in July 1909, have recently been uploaded on Genealogy World.

Ages and occupations of passengers who embarked in Australia are included; also list of passengers who disembarked at Durban (the lucky ones, not usually heard about!), and those who joined the ship at Durban for its final fateful voyage.

These lists have been transcribed from original handwritten records of the Natal Immigration Restriction Department.

Somerset / WOODWARD Bathford Avon
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 09:28 BST (UK)  »
Two missionary ornithologists, Richard Blake Woodward and John Deverell Stewart Woodward, born in the late 1840s in Brighton and Bathford Avon respectively, came to Natal, South Africa, ca 1870 and remained until ca 1905. They wrote "Natal Birds" in 1899, the first published study of this topic, and travelled extensively collecting specimens and writing about birds and other wildlife as well as pursuing their missionary endeavours. I have information about them including their origins and family, but their dates and places of death remain unknown. I believe it likely that they returned to their place of origin, England, and perhaps to Somerset where the family lived during the 1840s. Is there anyone researching the WOODWARD surname who believes they might be connected to this elusive pair of brothers?  Their parents were Richard Woodward and Mary Ann (nee STEWART). Richard snr was a retired Indian Army Major in 1841, and I have the family in subsequent UK censuses.  No sign of the brothers in UK GRO deaths up to 1920 and no deaths recorded for them in South Africa.   :'(
