Armed Forces / Irish 5th Fusiliers - circa 1846 - files
« on: Sunday 24 November 13 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Please forgive my ignorance - I just don't know where to look or how to start searching English/Irish documents from Australia  :)

I have been tracing my 5 x Grandfather Michael Dooley and historical paperwork from the Police Musuem in Victoria Australia has his application papers recording he served in the 5th Fusiliers Army for 7years.  Working backwards from the papers work he would have been in the Army circa 1846.

the paperwork also says he was in Mauritius prior to coming to Hobart Town Australia around 1853.  Did the Fusiliers go to Mauritius??

Michael Dooley was born 1824 in Galway ( I know this from his death certificate ).

I would be grateful for any help on how to proceed from here .    8)

Monaghan / Newbliss Kilbevan - Samuel Tibby
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 03:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello from Australia!  I am hoping that someone who is familiar with Monaghan records can point me in the right direction.

I found the birth town & parish ( 1817 ) that my family member came from - It was recorded in his Army record.

Can anyone advise me what resources are available when I can't find the family in the British census records ( he was sent to Sth Africa with the British Army in the 1850's).

Would there be parish records held anywhere without me having to fly around the world? :D

I think Samuel's wife was named Margaret  :)  Samuel's daughter was Elizabeth and her death certficate in Australaia says she was born in Limmerick in 1841.

Lincolnshire / Bourne Lincolnshire - Barnett & Underwood
« on: Wednesday 02 January 13 02:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on George BARNETT born 1835 in Bourne Lincolnshire.  George's Australian marriage & death certificate lists his parents Stephen BARNETT and Elizabeth UNDERWOOD.   I have searched through the UK census' records and can find no listing of this family??    George came to Australia around 1858 and I can find no record of Stephen or Elizabeth travelling with him.  Any help would be very much appreciated.   :)

Australia / Disappeared: Ann Jane BOYD
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 08:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am completely mystified as to what happened to Ann Jane Boyd.  Ann Jane married William Russell in Tasmania on 21 June 1851.  Their 2 sons both died in Hobart Tasmania in Infancy. William Thomas Russell in 1855 & Robert William in 1861.   William Russell remarried in 1879 in New South Wales stating Ann Jane to be deceased.  The death certificate of   Ann Jane's mother - Jane Irwin - in 1885 lists her as living aged 50 yrs.   Ann Jane's father - Robert Boyd - has a very incomplete death certificate with no children listed.  Any help would be very gratefully acknowledged :)

Antrim / St Anne's Church of Ireland Belfast - McKay Baptism
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
I found an Irish record online for my GGG  grandfather - James McKay who was baptised at St Anne's on 21 March 1830. His parents were listed as Jeremiah McKay & Eliza Johnston.  James also named Jeremiah & Eliza as his parental on his Australian marriage certificate in 1850.  I don't believe Jeremiah & Eliza came to Australia with James.  I would be grateful for any help with a marriage, birth or death dates or further children between Jeremiah & Eliza.   :)

I would be very grateful if any kind researcher with a copy of the 1863 Cape Almanac could give me the occupation details for Robert Rose Cowderoy. Robert was declared bankrupt afew years later in Sth Africa and was declared bankrupt on several occasions after he travelled to Australia.  I would be interested to know if there are any entries in  the almanac for the surname TIBBY  :)

« on: Wednesday 26 December 12 06:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from Australia!  I am hoping that there is a marriage record of Robert Rose COWDEROY & Elizabeth  Jane TIBBY who married 12 April 1858 in Cape Town. Hopefully a marriage record will give Elizabeth  TIBBY's  parent's names.
