I have anecdotal evidence  ::) that John North was baptised in Donyatt in 1779. His parents are Samuel and Rose/Rosanna North. I have records of four siblings baptised in Donyatt - Betty 1763, Samuel 1765, Thomas 1766 and Mary 1773, but can't find John. Any help with this gratefully received, Thanks.

The Common Room / John North b. c1779 Winsham area, Somerset
« on: Sunday 29 December 19 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
My oldest ancestor, who I'm 100% certain is my ancestor, is John North, who married Fanny Oliver in Winsham, Somerset on 31 January 1804. He was buried on 19 September 1827 in St Stephen's churchyard, Winsham, aged 48. He lived at Ammerham. However, I've been unable to find out when and where he was born/baptised. There are quite a few Norths in the area, particularly in Chaffcombe. I'm posting this on here because the area lies across Somerset, Devon and Dorset, and he may have been from a neighbouring village. Please can anyone help me find his birth/baptism, and so hopefully I trace his parents and any siblings? I have found an Ann North who married William Hutchings on 10 April 1804 in Winsham, and I thought that she might be John's sister, but can't find any evidence to prove or disprove this. Thanks for reading this, and I'd be really grateful for any help.

Lancashire / Isabella North, nee Neville, b. 1909 Liverpool
« on: Monday 31 December 18 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am working on filling a few gaps in my tree, and today I'm trying to find out what happened to Isabella North, nee Neville. She was the second wife of Edmund North. Edmund was born on 3 December 1899 in Warrington, parents Charles O North (1874-1950) and Esther Ditchfield (1877-1910), and is on the 1901 and 1911 Census in Warrington. I have a record of a marriage of Edmund North to Ellen Chambers, Q1 1928 in Liverpool and subsequent death of Ellen North Q4 1934. I have another marriage record of Edmund North to Isabella Neville, Q4 1940 in Liverpool. Edmund is on the 1939 Register as 'widowed' which substantiates these marriage records. I have a record of death of Edmund North Q3 1948 in Liverpool. I haven't found any records of children from either of these marriages, and also I seem to have hit a brick wall in finding out what happened to Isabella after Edmund died.  If there are no children, then this branch of my tree ends, but it would be good to have some closure on Isabella.
Thank you for reading this, and any suggestions, advice etc. will be gratefully received.

Devon / 1861 Census Stoke Damerel
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 14:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
Can anyone please tell me if the 1861 Census is available anywhere for Stoke Damerel? I can't find any of my lot on the 1861, but they are all there on the 1851 and 1871. Thanks.

Technical Help / Chromebook security
« on: Monday 14 May 18 19:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
We're looking for a cheap small laptop to use on holiday, and like the look of the Dell Chromebook 11 3180. We only want it for browsing the internet and for emails, and we are finding that our previous small Windows laptop is very slow, plus the battery life isn't great, and chromebooks seem to be faster than similar Windows laptops, and have a good battery life. We were wondering, however, if they are OK to do internet banking on, as this is something that we might have to do while we are away?
Thanks in anticipation of your advice!
Cheers

The Common Room / Census dates
« on: Thursday 21 December 17 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies in advance because I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times before, but asking RootsChatters directly is always the best way of finding things quickly and easily!
I want to know where I can find the actual dates when the 1891 Census was taken for Stoke Damerel, Devon, and Sunderland, County Durham. Thanks :)

Devon / Elizabeth Ann (nee Jewell) and James Burns
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone
I have today returned to a 'brick wall' which, as I've just realised, was the subject of my very first post to RootsChat! Here it is:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=629498.0

To summarize, I have Elizabeth Ann Jewell marrying a James Burns on 9 October 1887 in Stoke Damerel. She is 20, he is 24. Her father is Thomas Paul Jewell, his 'father' is given as Mary Burns (see post for reasons for this). I have a certified copy of their marriage certificate and these are definitely my husband's ancestors. I also have a certified copy of the birth certificate of the only child I can find, Stephen Owen Burns, born 25 July 1889, Stoke Damerel, father James Burns, rivetter, mother Elizabeth Ann Burns, nee Jewell. I have death and burial records for Stephen Owen Burns, died 10 January 1892.

After this, I can't find anything about what happened to Elizabeth and James, absolutely nothing! I have tried all kinds of permutations, taking advantage of my world subscription to FindMyPast, but that brick wall is still there!

For those of you kind enough to read this, and to plough through the original post, I am still of the opinion that on the 1891 Census, William S, Elizabeth and Stephen are the right family, and that William S is a mistake, and that Newcastle and Sunderland have been mixed up when giving his place of birth.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the original post and for your invaluable help in chipping away at the wall.

If anyone can suggest any other avenues I can pursue, or if you have any ideas of what I can do next, I would be very grateful. Thank you! 8)

Lancashire / Who is Agnes Wall?
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
Agnes first appears on the 1861 Census as Agnes Lythgoe, age 16, daughter of Peter and Margaret Lythgoe, living on Bury Lane in Newchurch, Leigh District. However, on the 1871 Census she appears as Agnes Wall, age 25, stepdaughter of Peter Lythgoe; the family are still at Bury Lane. On the 1881 Census the family are at Warrington Road, Glazebury and Agnes Wall, age 34 is described as daughter, on the 1891 Census, age 45, she is back to being stepdaughter. On the 1901 and 1911 she is still at Warrington Road as Head of household, and her death is recorded Q1 1916 Leigh, age 70.
I can't find Agnes on the 1851 Census, and I can't find any records of her birth/baptism. On the 1851 Census Peter and Margaret Lythgoe are living with his family at Light Oakes Fold, Bedford, Leigh. Peter married a Margaret Wall on 14/10/1850 at Newchurch Parish Church, and on the 1841 Census there is a Margaret Wall, age 15, living with the Lythgoe family at Light Oakes Hall. I assume that this is the Margaret Wall who Peter married.
My other assumption is that Margaret got pregnant and gave birth to Agnes - Peter may or may not be the father, but he obviously accepted her as his daughter/stepdaughter at some point before 1861, and she was the only one who remained in the family home until her death in 1916.
Can anyone help me to find Agnes before 1861?
Thanks for reading this.

Dorset Lookup Requests / John Way b. Q4 1851 Hawkchurch
« on: Sunday 20 November 16 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm trying to find the baptism of John Way. FreeBMD gives his birth as Q4 1851, and the available Census returns consistently give his birthplace as Hawkchurch, then in Dorset, but in Devon from 1896. I have looked on the Dorset OPC, but the baptisms have only been transcribed up to and including 1851, and because John's birth is Q4, I assume, if he was baptised, it would be 1852 or later. I would be very grateful for any help with this, thanks.
