Sligo / Patrick Cullen of Kilmactranny, convict
« on: Friday 23 October 20 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find info about my ancestor Patrick Cullen and his family. Here is what I know: He was born 1786, Sligo (from his Cert of Freedom) and his parents were William Cullen (farmer) and Honora Gaffeney (from his death cert). He married Margaret Curren (I believe in 1810, Drumshambo, but I don’t have a primary source for this). They lived in Kilmactranny and had 10 children (5 boys, 5 girls). In 1837 he was convicted of stealing and transported to Australia. I have found information about his trial and about his life in Australia, and I have also have information about 5 of his children who followed their father to Australia. They are Phillip (born 1816), Ellen Mary (1818), Thomas (possibly with second name Bernard) (1824), Dominic (1826) and Bridget (1828). Thomas was born in Ballynacheagh, Sligo (immigration record) and another place name that comes up in ancestry family trees is Glenkillamy (or Lankillamy?).
I have not been able to find any Irish birth, death or marriage info for Patrick and his children. Can anyone help? Or perhaps direct me to the most useful website for Sligo records?

Suffolk / Rosetta Cousens (Cousins) of Kersey
« on: Saturday 09 September 17 04:47 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to find Rosetta’s birth and parents. Any help would be most appreciated.
Here is what I know: She married Richard Gleed (Glead, Glede) 28 Sep 1828 in Kersey. I have found all the census records for her up to her death in 1883 (reg’d Cosford, Apr Q). The census records give her birth about 1806 in Kersey.
I have found a family of Cousens / Cousins in Kersey. William Cousins married Rose Hill, 31 Aug 1802. I’ve found various children’s baptisms / births in online records, but I’ve not found Rosetta.

I am trying to find the birth of my ancestor Adam Alderson. Here is what I know about him from on-line sources: He married Elizabeth Hutchinson on 29 May 1794 in the parish of St Luke, Old St, Finsbury, London. Later that year Adam became an articled clerk to an attorney in London. At this time they were living at London Wall, London. Between 1794 and 1812 they had a family of 6 girls (or possibly 7, with1 dying in infancy) and 3 boys. Adam completed his articles and became an attorney and they lived at Token House Yard.

Adam died in 1814 and is buried at Bunhill Fields, London. He was a non-conformist. His age at death, 49, gives a birth year of about 1765.

Although all my information has his residence as London (from 1794 on), I have been unable to find a birth record for Adam Alderson in London or close by. I have a hunch that he might be the Adam Al(l)derson who was born in parish of Barnard Castle, Durham and baptized 25 Jan 1765. The parent’s of this Adam Alderson were Roger Alderson and Dorothy Plewes and he was the youngest of several children. Can anyone help me find any further information that could prove or disprove my theory? I know that my Alderson ancestors had some connection with Durham since Adam’s second eldest daughter married there in 1827. This daughter also had a cousin “Mr Burry of Durham”. And another daughter is buried in Durham, although she had lived most of her life elsewhere.

Warwickshire / John Richards of Coventry - How can I find his birth and parents?
« on: Sunday 18 September 16 06:29 BST (UK)  »
My GGG grandfather, John Richards, was a convict sent to Australia in 1816. I have the Old Bailey record of his trial 10 May 1815. I have a huge amount of information about his life in Australia, but the Old Bailey trial record is the only information I have about him from England. He was 26 at the time of his trial, so born abt 1789. His certificate of Freedom states that his native place was Coventry, and his will (written about 1838) says that he owned properties in Bishop St and Cook St, Coventry. It seems likely that he inherited these properties after he was sent to Australia. At the time of his trial he was "very much in debt"
I have looked on-line but can’t find any births for "John Richards" in Coventry, but there are quite a few in Warwickshire. Can anyone offer any help in tracking down John's origins? Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

William and Sarah married 1853, Amersham and lived at Chesham Bois. They had the following children: Anthony 1814 (m Martha), Mary 1815, William 1818 (m Joanna/Hannah), Sarah 1819 (m David Ware - my GGG-Grandparents), James 1821 (m Mary), Susan 1823, Sophia 1826 (m Robert Brown), John 1827 (m Fanny Puddephatt) and Ann 1831. Also possibly Frederick (1840), although he may have been a grandchild.
Would love to hear from anyone researching this family to share information. Sarah and husband David came to Australia (as did her brother James) and I have quite a lot of information on their branch of the tree.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Birth of John WHEATLEY (1793-1872), Buxted
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help clear up some confusing info I have regarding the birth of my ancestor John Wheatley. My research is going really well for the Australian part of my heritage, but I don’t really know what I’m doing once I get back to England.
I have John’s death certificate transcript which has the following info: Born in England, parents John Wheatley (labourer) and Mercy (surname unknown). Age 79 which gives a birth year of about 1793.
I have info from the Weald website which matches up and adds to this: Born 1793 Buxted, Sussex, Christened 5 May 1793, St Margaret’s Parish church. Parents: John Wheatley and Mercy (Mary) Wheeler.
But then I went to FamilySearch website and John’s birth got a bit blurry. While FamilySearch had John’s siblings with mother’s name recorded as either Mercy or Mary, the John Wheatley christened on 5 May 1793 has mother’s name Ann  ???. It seems likely that the FamilySearch mother’s name is incorrect but can this be verified?
To confuse matters further there is a record for a John Wheatley, with father John and mother Mercy, christened 18 yrs later, 22 Apr 1811 (Lewes, not Buxted, Non-conformist record Indexes) and also on the same day, same place and with the same parents Jane Wheatley was christened (Eng Births & Christenings). The Weald shows Jane’s christening with this date, but at St Margaret’s, Buxted. And it has Jane’s birth as 19 Mar 1811, Buxted.
I know that John underwent a religious conversion to the Wesleyan Methodist denomination and became a lay preacher as a young man. Was he re-baptised in a Wesleyan church? With his youngest sister? Or was she christened in a different church on the same day? Or was there only 1 christening on this day and Jane has been incorrectly transcribed as John?
Any help or advice will be most appreciated.

Sussex / John Wheatley from Buxted and Philadelphia Ashby from Mayfield
« on: Monday 12 August 13 15:44 BST (UK)  »
I am a descendant of John Wheatley (1793 Buxted, Sussex – 1872 Gunning, NSW,Aust) and Philadelphia Ashby (1802 Mayfield, Sussex – 1838 Parramatta, NSW). I have quite a lot of information about their life in Australia (which I am very happy to share), but my information about the 2 families before they came to Australia is limited. I’ve got all the names and dates from The Weald website and I also know a little about John’s lay preaching from the following:
http://webjournals.ac.edu.au/journals/adeb/w/wheatley-john-1792-1872/
I’d love to hear from anyone who is researching these families so I can put some flesh on the bare bones of The Weald’s genealogical info.

Family History Beginners Board / Caroline Mabbott birth
« on: Saturday 10 August 13 10:44 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to find birth information for my 3rd great grandmother, Caroline Mabbott. This is what I do know.
From her death cert: she was born in London 1808 or 1809; her father was Joseph Mabbott, fruiterer. However, she was 92 when she died and since she was then living in Australia and her husband and had long since died, the only people who could have provided this information were her surviving children so it is not necessarily accurate.
Her ages on other documents / sources give a birth year range from 1807 to 1811.
At the time of her marriage to John Henry Stead, 26 Mar 1826, she was living in the parish of St Marylebone, County of Middlesex. John and Caroline lived for a few years in the US and Canada, before returning to England and settling in Devon, where the family (they now had 4 children) was recorded in the 1841 census (Stead has been transcribed as Head). Among the other members of this household was Lydia Mabbott, 15 (can’t read her occupation). She could have been Caroline’s much younger sister, or perhaps she was a niece or cousin?
I have not found any birth records for Caroline, daughter of Joseph. Ancestry have lots of trees with father William Mabbott and mother Elizabeth Painty, with Caroline being born, or at least baptised in 1814 (or 1816, Family search), but this was in Nottingham, not London, and this Caroline would be too young. Surely this must be a different Caroline.
I have found baptism records for 6 children whose parents were Thomas and Lydia Mabbott, including Caroline Mabbott, born 9 Oct 1809 and baptised 29 Oct 1809 St Andrew, Middlesex – which is right in the middle of my possible date of birth range and roughly the right geographical location. There was also an older sister called Lydia. I don’t think Lydia was a very common name so the fact that “my” Caroline had a Lydia Mabbott living with her makes it very tempting to think that this could be “my” Caroline Mabbott, with the 15 year old Lydia from the census being a niece or cousin.
So, was Caroline’s father Joseph, William or Thomas? Or none of the above? How can I find out?
