Armed Forces / WW2 - Burma Campaign company/division help
« on: Thursday 22 June 23 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

My grandfather served in Singapore during WW2. I'm in the process of getting his military record, but in the meantime I've found his application to join the Burma Star Association.

Like many, my grandfather never spoke to us about his war, but we like to think he was able to share his experiences with the other veterans in the Association and he was a proud member right up to his death.

I'm posting to ask if anyone could share any info about the companies/division he listed on his application form - the transcript and image are below:

419 & 436 Company India
Cross Keys 2nd div Malaya Cinc Staff S E Asia Singapore

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / German wartime postcard
« on: Wednesday 06 April 22 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I work at a WW2 era heritage attraction and a gentleman brought in a postcard which his father acquired (not quite sure how) sometime during/after the war. It's been in a box since then and no-one has so far been able to read it, even the address is causing problems! He's very interested to know what it's all about - is anyone able to shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Surname on wedding certificate 1899
« on: Sunday 13 June 21 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'd appreciate any help working out the top surname on the attached wedding certificate. It's the name of a witness to the marriage which took place in Norwich in 1899.

Unfortunately, this is the only example of his handwriting - James Fenn/Fann/Fawn...what do you think?

Many thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1880s Military Medical Record
« on: Monday 14 November 16 12:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble making sense of my Great-Great-Grandfather's medical history from his short stint in the army.

If anyone could shed some light on the attached document I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance  :)

Hello!

I have a photo which I'd appreciate dating and which is causing a bit of debate!

This is a photo of my great-grandmother's family which has only recently surfaced :)

We're all very curious about the gentleman's trousers! Why do they have buttons up to the knee?! Do they have a practical purpose?

He worked in a brewery so I wondered if that might have something to do with it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Suffolk / Humphrey Farrant - Great Dunmow
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on Humphrey Farrant/Farrent/Farrand (one of those names with a million possible spellings grr). I believe he was born in 1773 and died in 1851. I think he married Jane Choat in 1795 in Great Thurlow in Suffolk and was the father of another Humphrey Farrant who was born in Great Wratting.

He worked in Great Dunmow for over 40 years for Sir George Beaumont's family. He was an outdoor servant of some description but I don't know exactly what he did. If anyone could add anything at all I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Suffolk / Charles Mitchell - Shop in Bury St Edmunds
« on: Friday 01 May 15 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'm looking for information about businesses belonging to my Great-Great-Grandfather.

Charles (Otley) Mitchell was born in Long Melford in 1865 and was a licensed hawker until he got his own shop in the 1890s/1900s, which I think was in Raingate Street in Bury St Edmunds.

In the late 1910s I believe he also became the licensee of the Coach and Horses pub on Honey Hill in Bury St Edmunds.

His son (my great grandfather) Henry Charles Mitchell was an oil delivery man in Bury St Edmunds in the 50s/60s.

I'd love to know if anyone has photographs/information about Charles’ businesses or memories of Henry Charles. I’m particularly curious about what was sold in the shop.

There's a rather lovely photograph of Charles' wife Amelia Jane Mitchell nee Devereux, with her daughter Ada, on Familysearch (https://familysearch.org/photos/images/13649413/) and I wondered if anyone had any of Charles himself.

Thanks in advance! :)

Suffolk / Devereux family
« on: Friday 23 January 15 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

Some extremely kind person has put together a family tree for my maternal ancestors and one branch came as quite a surprise:

http://www.genealogydepot.com/14493b.html

I wasn't expecting to come across a name like Devereux as my family has such a working class background.

Does anyone have any further information on the Devereuxs of Suffolk, particularly how a French name ended up in East Anglia?  :)

Antrim / James Beattie died between 1908 - 1911
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'd really appreciate some help finding out what happened to James Beattie who I can't trace beyond 1908.

I don't have a birth date but I have a few other details. His father was also James Beattie, he died in 1898. James Jr married Maggie Smyth on 17th June 1886 at Frederick Street Methodist Church. He had two children James Marcus Beattie (born 1888) and George Herbert Beattie (born 1895).

He's a bit of a mysterious figure as in 1901 I can't find him in the census as he isn't living with his wife and children (they are living with his wife's uncle). According to the 1908 street directory he was living at 37 Dewey Street Belfast and was working as a brassfinisher (a profession he always seems to have had). By 1911 his wife is listed as a widow. So I'm fairly certain he died between 1908 and 1911.

If anyone could look him up and shed some light on his death I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.
