Hi there, I know it’s a long shot but wondering if anyone may be planning a visit to Archives Tas in Hobart and could possibly look up the following register of banns, not sure if it is off the shelf volume or on microfilm.

https://librariestas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/tas/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fARCHIVES_ITEMS$002f0$002fARCHIVES_ITE_DIX:NS349-1-8/email?d=ent%3A%2F%2FARCHIVES_ITEMS%2F0%2FARCHIVES_ITE_DIX%3ANS349-1-8%7E%7E0
Description Register of Banns

Register of Banns - Holy Trinity Hobart
Item Number NS349/1/8
Access Open
Location Hobart A 186 1
Copy Number Z2255

I have the marriage certificate but there is ambiguity in the groom’s surname which I would like to verify against what Surname is recorded on the banns, as I have been unable to confirm death records for either bride or groom.

Bride:   Mary Ann ROBINSON
Groom:   Henry Dowse PALMER or Henry DOWSE
Marriage:  16 June 1834
Where:   Holy Trinity, Hobart
Source   https://stors.tas.gov.au/NI/821001

Groom
I know there are some newspaper records of a Henry Palmer DOWSE in Brisbane (1846-1848) and trying to see if they are one and the same person. I have ruled out death of a Henry PALMER in Hobart on 17 Aug 1855, who also had wife and child named Mary Ann, after reading his Will/Probate.

Bride
From witnesses on 1837 and 1852 marriage certificates I believe Mary Ann ROBINSON was born in Hobart on 8 Dec 1817 to parents Edward ROBINSON and Elizabeth BURN.

Child
I believe they had one daughter, Mary Ann PALMER b.12 Mar 1837 / bap.2 Apr 1837 in Hobart, father listed as a Labourer in Hobart, no other information on the parents after that apart from in the child’s marriage notice in Hobart 1852, stating she was the only daughter of Henry PALMER.

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone may be able to assist in a lookup at Auckland Archives of the record below.

Rotorua Public School Registers of Admission, Progress and Withdrawal (R25043779) 1910-1919
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=25043779

Interested to find a record of a boy named Charles BLACK (very small possibility of him being under surname Spens Black, just in case). He has also had other alias first names such as Charles Edward, Reginald Charles, and Maxwell.

I have found a Charles BLACK in the 1918 Annual Examinations at Rotorua District High, Standard 5 who is of the right age, born 1905, but hoping the APW records may give more detailed info of the parent/guardian, DOB and possible previous/next school, and how long he attended Rotorua, just so I know it's the right boy.

I know from other APW transcripts he attended the schools below after leaving Rotorua.
* 19 May - 24 Jun 1919 - Thorndon School (under Reginald Charles BLACK)
* Aug 1919 - Normal Wellington School (no record, taken from Rangitata APW)
* 13 Aug - 16 Dec 1919 - Rangitata Island School (under Charles Edward SPENS-BLACK)

Not urgent, but if someone has a free moment to copy the APW I will be most grateful.

Thanks kindly, Donna.

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone knows where I could look to find a passenger list for ship Margaret Galbraith, left London 2 Nov 1878 and arrived Auckland early Feb 1879. I found a newspaper article in the Thames Advertiser 8 Feb 1879 and interested in finding further details on passenger by the name of Mrs Shield.

Also interested if anyone could shed some light as to what "powder ground" in Auckland may be, and where exactly Lizards to Three Kings is, are they Islands?

Many thanks.

Hi there, hoping someone would be kind enough to do an ITM lookup when things resume at Archives (please-no rush).

Intention to Marry Index - 1883, Vol 28, Pg 829, Entry No. 3
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=2840395
Bride: SHIELD Mary Stanley
Groom: BLACK Maxwell S
District: Timaru

I have the original marriage certificate of 26 Apr 1883 from St Mary’s Church Timaru but it has many changes crossed through by Minister, discrepancies of name spellings (Marie not Mary, Sheild not Shield) gave no ages and no details of when Marie was widowed. I am hoping the ITM may provide at least their ages and also how long in NZ so I can try to search for her arrival as unable to find any link to her being widowed in NZ. I have two newspaper marriage notices, one using Marie’s maiden name name and the other republished a day later in her widowed name.

Many thanks, Donna (Aus).

Would anyone happening to visit this Library/Archive be able to do a lookup and photograph of school admission register for Eric Frederick BLACK, attended Omata School in 1920 (Grade Standard 3). This may have been his final year at the school and would be around 13 years old, birth date is 3 Aug 1907.

Wanting to find out when he started at this school and if it lists parents or guardian, or previous school attended as trying to work my way backwards to find industrial school/receiving home records. Eric absconded from unknown industrial school in 1916 and was living with his grandparents in Wellington age 8 before he was taken away by authorities. Apparently taken to Omata area and may have been living with foster family by name of BARNS?

Accession No: ARC2002-1047
Box 3, Item 10 - Omata School Admission Register 1900-1928

I also have a separate thread on this message board for this same child https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=824324.0

Thank you

Hi everyone,

Looking for assistance to find any Receiving House / Industrial School / Maintenance records, for child Eric Frederick BLACK, son of Zoe Marguerite BLACK, father UNKNOWN. Family sometimes known by SPENS-BLACK, I have admission date but have no idea where, not sure if nominal rolls could lead to name of institution or industrial school. From mother and her family whereabouts, I would hazard a guess around Wellington where Eric may have been born, possibly through to Riccarton/Sydenham, Christchurch where his mother married in 1911 and had 4 other children.

If anyone can assist in any way with narrowing down my search area, or has access to view records at local archives it would be much appreciated.  I live in Australia and cannot research local NZ archives in person. My ideal outcome would be to locate admission or Industrial school record to see if it possibly names the father of Eric (listed as NR on birth index).

* Industrial Schools - Nominal Rolls (R12026605) ACGB 8305, Record Group CW14. Year 1908 Box/Item 19/25, Year 1909 – Box/Item 19/26, Year 1910 – Box/Item 19/27.

I am in my 10th year trying to find information on this child Eric Frederick BLACK and his mother Zoe. At present I have no direct link to this family but want to solve a 113 year mystery hoping Eric is the missing unnamed child of my great grand-father who in 1907 deserted his pregnant wife and young son in Wellington, AND also deserted a young girl known only as “Miss Black” who he had an illicit relationship with and was also pregnant at the same time. Miss Black’s mother was referred to as “M.S Black”. It's a needle in a haystack but this child and his family is my best lead fitting in with the very little information I have to work from.

Below is what I have found from newspaper accounts in 1912 and 1916.
Eric admitted to a Receiving Home on 4/8/1908, a day after his 1st birthday 3/8/1907? Spent around 3½ years in an Industrial School until 3/11/1911, mother Zoe (aka Margaret or Maggie) was liable for maintenance during this time, it may have been paid by her parents Marie Spens-Black or Maxwell Spens-Black. On 16/8/1911 Zoe married Samuel BLOOD and took charge of the child on 3/11/1911 but Zoe gave permission for Eric to be placed with her mother, in Feb 1912 Zoe’s husband refused to pay the maintenance arrears for Zoe’s child and went to jail twice (1916 1 mth Wellington Gaol & 1917/1918 6 mths Lyttleton Gaol). In Feb 1916 at the time Zoe was separating from her husband, another newspaper article stated Eric had run away from industrial school and was being harboured by his grandmother in Wellington, so unsure just how long Eric spent in an industrial school. I have traced Eric from 1928 to his death in 1984 in Oakura, Taranaki but have unfortunately not been able to make contact with any of his children possibly still surviving around New Plymouth. I also understand there may have been a 2nd illegitimate child by the name of BLACK in this family, maybe similar age as Eric b.1907, so I cannot discount that depending on it's DOB.

Any help would be immensely appreciated from abroad.

Europe / GERMANY Geburtsurkunde auf Englisch übersetzen - Surname WOIDE
« on: Sunday 05 June 16 09:12 BST (UK)  »
Dear list,

I am hoping someone could help me translate two German birth certificates (1889 & 1891) for two brothers in Breslau, I have typed up as much as I possibly can in both German and very bad English translation however I am having trouble reading some of the hand-written German (mainly the occupation and place names/addresses).

Both birth certificates should be exactly the same except that the 1889 certificate has an extra line at the end as it was re-issued in 1910 before my great-grandfather left Germany for Australia.

Attached are two typed documents
* 1889 Birth Certificate - Robert Paul Gustav WOIDE (and scan of 2 page certificate)
* 1891 Birth Certificate - Paul Hermann Wilhelm WOIDE (I cannot work out how to download certificate but it can be viewed at http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/7778996

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Donna.
